Default DIY RPF1 Center Caps

So, if you are like me and either hate the look of the RPF1 center caps or don't really feel like dishing out $100 bucks for a set of CENTER CAPS for Christ's sake, this should be useful to you. This should work on all 16", 17", and 18" RPF1's. I believe that the 15s and 19s use a different center cap. This is my first ever how-to, so please be kind.

To begin, you will need these supplies:

Valspar Primer - $4
Valspar Gloss Paint of your choice (it's nice to have options, isn't it) - $4
Valspar Clear (gloss if you want a glossy finish, flat if you want a matte finish) - $4
3M sandpaper (300-400) grit - $3
Pliers
3M tape (I used painter's tape but really anything but Scotch should work) - $2
2" Knockout seal P/N 60720 (can be found at Home Depot) x5 (if you want a spare, just in case) - $6

A possible alternative to painting the knockout seals is to use plasti dip, which is the rubber coating they use for tools. It costs around $12, so the price won't be different.

Also, if you want a more permanent installation (just to make sure they don't come off), you may want to add superglue to the prongs when you go to press them in the last time. I chose not to in case I was required to remove them when I autocross

I have had them in for a few days and they are still in there snug. I have NOT exceeded 75mph since installation.

Total Cost - $30 max

This is what the knockout seal should look like:

Prepping for paint:

Take the knockout seals out of the packaging and tape up all of the prongs on the back with tape. This will keep you from scratching your wheel as you attach and remove the homemade center caps. Do this for all of the caps. It should look something like this:

Next, head to your wheel with the caps and pliers. Bend the prongs until there is a very snug fit. You don't want them coming off while you are driving but at the same time you want to be able to get them on. Rinse and repeat. NOTE: Make sure that you bend the prongs equally so that the cap stays as close as possible to center.

Once this is done, sand the face of all of the caps so that it appears rough on the entire surface. If you cannot get the groove perfectly, that is okay.

Painting:

Now that all of the center caps have been fitted to the wheel and sanded, it is time to begin painting. Begin with primer, adding 3-5 coats per instructions. The reason that I chose to add more coats than it calls for is to get rid of that 2" stamp more easily. It will may not be gone at this stage, but it will eventually disappear. Wait an hour or so to begin painting color.

Once all caps are primered, do the same steps as above, but apply more coats. Apply 3-5 coats, wait for the paint to dry to handle, sand lightly, and then paint another 2-3 coats. This helps to smooth the finish out. By now the 2" stamp should be gone. Wait an hour or so to begin applying the clear coat.

Finally, apply 4-6 coats of clear coat so that you have a nice strong finish. Let the caps dry fully before you try to press them into the wheels (I waited 24 hours). Otherwise, you may press smudge marks into the paint because it isn't dry all of the way through. If you have flat clear paint, it should look like this:

Installing on the wheels:

All you really have to do is press them in. Make sure they are still snug and the tape is still on so you don't scratch your wheels. Once finished, it should look like this:

Thanks for reading and I hoped it helped you save a few bucks!

Edit: 1/7/2012

After over 5 months with them on the car, I have had zero issues whatsoever. They remains snug as when I installed them the first day, and the paint shows minimal to no signs of chipping/scratches. Bear in mind I have taken several long trips and have exceeded 140 mph and they are still holding strong. Food for thought if you were concerned about the longevity of the caps.

Way to get resourceful man, DYI's ftw +1

They look really good for what they are..my ENKEI's have their Infinity symbol on the center cap and I love that, but that look works really well for your setup.

not bad, but i woulda matched the wheel color.

You could put a logo on it of some sort.

I thought it would have been too difficult to match Enkei's Matte Bronze, plus I already had all of the black paint on hand. All I had to pay for was the caps. I considered trying to nab a set of Mazda center caps and attaching the emblem to it in some fashion. I am not sure how they are attached to center caps, though. Small steps.

if you have the old centers just use those emblems. You will probably have to shave off the little nips that hold the caps in but you could give it a go....if you are feelin lucky.

I considered that and I still may. The only thing is I want to keep the stockers complete in case I get in a pinch.

those caps should be powdercoat-able...which might be useful for anyone who powdercoats their wheels.

Forgive my bump but thanks for the Hot-to. I installed mine this past weekend and they look much better than seeing the rusty axle nuts and I never liked the $23/each Enkei center caps.
