Default BNR S4 with OEM BCS

Hey guys, I gotta quick question.

First some backstory:

I blew up the hot side seals on my K04 while roll racing a brand new Mustang GT (very close race btw). So oil is pouring out of the exhaust and the car is making gigantic blue clouds of smoke. I confirmed that just the oil seals were damaged, the turbines did not explode and the engine is still healthy (I did a compression test, inspected the pistons with a borescope, etc. looked all good).

A new K04 from Mazda is about $1290 for the turbo only. A BNR S4 and all of the included studs, gaskets, copper crush washers, etc. is $1300. It's a better built turbo and will make a whole hell of a ton more power. So I'm going big turbo as the opportunity has arisen.

Okay now the question:

I plan on ordering the turbo tomorrow, since I get paid tomorrow. The car is currently not running but I would like to install it ASAP to get the car back on the road, with the WGDC set to 0 across the board. However, I know this turbo needs supporting mods. These things, like the intake, BCS, and MAP sensor I cannot afford until next week. If you are wondering why I can't afford it is because I have been putting the majority of my paychecks towards the note on this car.

I already have a CS Stage II SRI, which has a 2.5" TIP and 3" MAF. Would I be okay to run the car at no boost (0% WGDC) if I just put the appropriate coupler on? And would I be okay with the stock BCS at no boost?

Again, this is only for one or two weeks, I will get the rest of the mods (3.5" intake, 51R tray, 3-port EBCS, 3.5bar MAP, 3" catless DP) ASAP. I just want to be able to drive the car again because my rental is extremely expensive since I am under 25.

Expect, and plan for, any mod work follow the 2/4 rule. Twice the cost and four times the effort/time or vice versa.

If you are already strapped for cash suck it up and find a used K04. You'll have a much better time if you do the little things first (intake, DP, battery tray) and once you've built the foundation go BT.

Also note that 0% WGDC is NOT zero boost. That just means there is zero input to increase boost above wastegate spring pressure.

If you want to run zero boost for safety, get a boost gauge and keep the throttle input under control.

Or I could just use the AP live data? Either way, I changed my mind on the turbo. The S3 is a lot cheaper so I can get the BCS and MAP sensor included and it would still be $1,300 after taxes, as much as the S4 alone without tax.

I think I’ll be happy with the S3, like I said in some other threads I don’t plan on rebuilding the block or anything, and the S3 will get me to the limits especially on E30.

You can def get a better price than that if you're willing to buy used. Also have you considered CS turbo? That's also a drop-in option.

I actually did change my mind to a Corksport turbo. I was between it and the S3, but the Corksport turbo is the same price and comes with the plug and play 3.5 bar MAP sensor for free, and flows the same as the S3. Plus I don’t need to change my intake or anything, all that I would need is a 3-port BCS (which still isn’t necessary but it’s nice to have for higher boost).
KiwiFlavor likes this.
