The AP racing calipers are great as far as weight, quality, and ability to handle a lot of heat. But the nature of their construction will require more maintenance when subject to water exposure/rain and especially salt if you live in a place where they salt the streets during winter. Under these conditions the seals will deteriorate rather rapidly and the anodized coating will start to oxidase a little.

For racing purposes, if money is no option and excluding ceramic rotors, I would choose in this order:

Brembo (XA racing series - not GT)
AP or Alcon - both about the same
Stoptech

A P Racing Pro 5000 Plus Brake Calipers - Demon Tweeks

If we go that route then the problem is getting brackets fabricated to fit. As well as hats for the disc that are the right thickness. Can be done, but not cheaply.

If I made the investment on the AP brakes, I'd likely swap calipers for track days. Not really the hugest pain in the ass.
Night before, swap them on.
Day after, take them of.
Just drive too and from the track.
kritz likes this.

I do that with pads and discs already. Calipers... No thanks. Full fluid replacement and bleed every time will cost a bomb in brake fluid alone. . Disconnecting brake lines regularly is asking for trouble.

Why do that? What's so bad about using them on the street?

They don't have dust seals on the pistons, because they'll melt.

You're tracking a car, and the cost of brake fluid is what's gonna put you over budget?

Remember we live in the country that hates car enthusiasts....
It's cheaper for us to buy tires from US and get shipped over here ($300 in shipping alone), this works out to be ~70% the price of buying high performance tires locally....

Not very applicable at the club level but brake line quick disconnects are not that expensive for the time and frustration they can save you.

Not bad, but I'd still rather save the effort of changing brakes. Wouldn't it be easier just to clean the calipers regularly? Surely they are made to handle the weather and brake dust, they're not exactly an inside pet.

Still shopping around. Stop Tech kit firming as favourites.

I want to see if I can get the Stop Tech calipers and brackets by themselves and use my own Rotor/Pad combination. I don't really wanna use Stop Tech pads and Rotors, would rather use QFM, Project Mu and DBA Rotors.

There's nothing wrong with Stoptech rotors. When they wear out then change them.

Yes you can get the parts individually.

I'm went with Stoptechs in the front with XP10 pads, and Mazda5 rears with XP8 pads. I'll be switching over to SRF fluid at the same time. Everything is in the mail right now.

Mate I want to vote for you for president. But I have one request:

According to the wheel fitment template on stoptech's website, the caliper will foul BADLY on the spokes of my stock Gen II rims. I have a set of Enkei Fujin that have slightly more space, but still won't fit according to the template.

What wheels are you using? Have you tried the fitment template? If you still have your stock rims can you tell us what the outcome is once the brakes are fitted?

I have a good price organised but I just need to confirm the wheel fitment before I go ahead with it!

Legalities aside, I wouldn't do it from a suspension geometry point of view.

I'm running 17x9 RPF1's +45 offset.

I will need spacers for sure most likely in the 25mm range. I will be using extended wheel studs, and possibly some camber from the Corksport coils.

Final fitment will depend once its on the car.

Awwwww Shieeettt....

Have you still got your stock wheels? If so then see if they fit anyway, plenty of people will be interested in that outcome.

GOOD news, and BAD news

I tried the Stoptech fitment template today on 3 wheels, my 2004 Mazda6 winter tire wheels, my stock gen2 wheels and my 17x9 RPF1's.

The Stock Mazda6 wheels need a 25mm spacer bringing the total size to 17x7 +35mm

The Stock Genpu wheels need a 15mm spacer bringing the total size to 18x7.5 +37mm

The 17x9 RPF1's . . . . . The wheels needs a 55mm spacer the size of the caliper is just to much for these wheels. Sadly they will be for sale.

The good news, I'm should be getting a set of 17x9 +65 Volk TE37 wheels in matte bronze. Those will be the new shoes. These wheels have plenty of caliper clearance. Not only that but I can use spacers to tune the offset to exactly what works.

The 17x8's will fit because the spoke design is different.

Just 17x9 is just too small for me.

the TE37's need a 20mm spacer to fit which brings the offset to +45mm for me.

I will still be running the 255/40-17 RS-3's. When my Corksport coilovers get here, after I pay wth the camber I'll see if 275/40-17's will work well of they will I will run those in the front.

Did anybody try this kit on a MS6? It is offered with optional calipers from AP Racing. If it is a direct bolt-on, that would be sweet.

Still bashing the stock calipers, gotta say they do a great job for a single piston setup. All it needs is an aggressive race pad and good rotors and they start spitting flames!

(Watch in HD)

Here's what the sparks look like when they hit your rim

Still looking for the silver bullet 4 pot brakes that will fit under the stock rims!

So it's the sparks that leave those marks after a track session? I was wondering what caused that.

The melted pads material causes that as it gets thrown off the rotor.

Reedy; How often do you have to replace the caliper seals with this kind of use?

Anyone else get sick to their tum tums watching the tire peel away from the rim in the corners? lol

Still have the original seals. They don't seem to be deteriorating too badly an I keep a close eye on them. My ABS sensors started melting before the seals started failing (I took some bad advice to take my backing plates off, put them back on again pretty quickly after I noticed that happening.)

I'd be more worried if I wasn't using track tyres that are designed to deal with it

And yep, DBA4000's, They work well and look badass for a good price. My track rotors have quite a lot of surface damage after this kind of abuse but they haven't warped or cracked on me at all. Top Rotor for the price.

I'm also running DBA4000's as a dual purpose street/track rotor (Carbotech AX6 and Carbotech XP10). I have to agree with Reedy; they are great. They seem to be wearing well and haven't warped or cracked either.

As for my caliper seals, they were OK up until the last 2 events I ran. Now my front left is 1/2 gone, but nothing is leaking.
