Default Oil advice 2012 MS3

Greetings,

I purchased a brand new 2012 MS3 and after looking over my manual it says to only avoid aggressive driving for the first 600 miles and do an oil change at 5000 miles.

5000 miles seems like a long time to keep the oil from the initial break in, in fact it's a long time for any oil change on a turbo car. On my WRX, 3000-4000 miles and Rotella T6 was the best way to keep the engine happy (Blackstone labs data). These cars would shear a crappy 5W30 down to a 20 in no time.

Any comments/recommendations? What oil does the MS3 come with from factory? Is it really safe to keep the factory oil for that long? What oil/OCI do you guys recommend from thereafter?

Thanks.

Welcome! I'm sure there is already a thread about this. I have no idea what the stock oil is but I'm sure it's nothing nice. I've changed mine every 3 to 4k depending on how I've been driving. I've always used 5quarts 5w30 royal purple 1quart Lucas synthetic oil stabilizer. Runs like a champ.

I would agree on 5000 miles. It just doesn't seem right in many turbo applications. For our cars there is a must for a oil catch can. As the miles get put on a oil change interval there is more and more chance of oil vapor to circulate though the engine. As far as what type of oil i have also read very good things on the T6. I have personally used Moble 1 0w40 this is the same oil used in the Nissan GTR and it will simply thin out very fast. i am currently using amsoil 5w40 if you can foot the bill i highly recommend. You will probably get slamed and get tolded to search but this toppic is always a good one to have fresh and out in the open.

5w-40. There might be better if you plan on running e85 too. Look for the thread talking about sticky spill valves.

Pennzoil platinum/ultra 5w-30 is also good for these engines. That is what I run and change it every 3000k.

Rotella or Pen Plat/Ultra, they hold up well to fuel dilution from DI.

Thanks for the information, I did search first but nothing came out specifically regarding factory oil and how long people kept it. For those who bought their cars new, how long before the first oil change?

I guess I'll be getting more T6 soon. :-)
