The manual sucks and doesn't even show our key type. What you have to do is pull the slide to release the top portion of the key. Now look inside the well of the transponder and you will see a label with writing on it. In small letters you will see where it says 'Open' on both sides. Take a very small flat head screw driver and gently pry apart the two sides of the transponder. Once you get the cover off, there is a black disk that covers the battery. You can just pull it off with your fingernail. The battery in mine was CR2025- a flat circular type battery you would find in a clock, etc.. Hope that helps...

It's kinda sketchy how you're supposed to do it. I just did it recently cause I was sick of it telling me to change the battery.

Steps:

1. Remove key attachment or whatever you want to call it

2. Use thin flat head screw driver to go between the grooves to start the opening

3. Go along the side with screw driver on both sides carefully. It took me a couple of times switching from side to side until I could finally pull both halves apart.

4. Remove black battery cover and replace battery!

Enjoy having to not hear the car bitching at you each time you turn it off...

On a side note, is anybody's smart key scratched up quite a bit? I've got another few keys on my key chain though.

Mine has been telling me this as well. But should the battery be dieing so quick? It seems like a short life. I feel like with our keys, it should use less power, but again I have no clue

I thought the same thing at first, but I kinda thought about it a bit more. I'm thinking that a lot of it has to do with the fact that the key has to constantly be sending a signal to the car to know if its in range. That's just my case.

Did you have to buy the batteries? Or was that 3.95 batteries parts and labor included?

They didn't scan your key like they did mine, then void the warranty on it because it was in contact with a car which had a modified PCU.... did they? BRB stranded.

Do what I never heard that and don't see how that could even be true inky way to even gain access to those keys is through the pats function through the scan tool and even then only certain techs have that access. But I'm really interested in hearing about this. I'm a Mazda tech and never heard of this.

And don't waist your money at dealership for batterys we charge like $3 for one I'm sure u can get a pack for.that price.

$3.95 battery & labor out the door, not sure how much you can save for labor to replace it your own. I have secondary key to use so just bring it in whenever I have chance pass by the dealer with no rush.

$3.95 isn't all that much considering what people spend on mods

To bad the nearest Dealership to me is a 3 hour drive and over a mountain pass. I decided to just do it myself lol.

Glad I found this thread! Been wondering about it for a while. My "spare" is in use now and I'm getting the Key is Dying notice. Homedepot here I come.

Cheers,

Funny how many times you see people post about using the search button. I used "Key Fob Battery" as my search string on the forum and this thread didn't come up. In order to find the thread, I used the same string on Google and added "Mazdaspeed3".

Thanks Special--k for starting this thread! Thanks 2010Speed3 for the pics and details!

Yeah let's cry because you tried ONE way to search and didn't have everything spoon fed to you. It's the Internet try a different site that's why their are millions of them. Are you really that lazy? Imagine back in the old day actually having to read a book to find the answers. Shocking right?
