Folks, I apologize for my absence. I've come here to inform you all that as of last night, I installed a brand new custom firmware on the deck. It's absolutely foolproof and its a beautiful interface. The previous version I used had a resolution that is clearly apparent to be wrong for this deck because the new one is smaller and much more native. Tons and tons of new features. Either send me a pm and I'll send you the links with instructions or when I find the time, I'll post a more detailed manual here.

Let me know, takes maybe 10 minutes.

Yeah, that's a waste of time. Their firmware is much more restrictive then what I have available. My firmware is substantially less restrictive. I have more features available and my firmware looks much more appealing. Also, not to forget that my firmware comes rooted.

I'll make a video after work today showcasing what it looks like.

To me by biggest concern is the bluetooth quality for voice calls.

Most of the aftermarket headunits like this I find are ALL garbage.

Hopefully this changes that? or atleast maybe its better?

Also could i just get the updated HU and use your firmware? Since it would be nice to have a HU that works with my Stock Bose System.

Yesterday I tested my Bluetooth incoming and outgoing calls. My wife was in the house, I had her call me. My phone lit up, and her contact info popped up on the screen. Call quality is what I would expect from any quality product. Doesn't sound distorted or choppy. I called her too from the deck too. I use a third party app as a phone book and have my google account linked to it. So I no longer have to be tethered to the deck, the numbers are now all stored. The internal dialer and phone book ate as good as a paperweight.

This deck has my personal approval for call quality.

I need to know if you're running a KLD unit. Go to your settings and scroll all the way to the bottom and click "About Machine" and take note of what it says under MCU Version. Send me a pm with your results and I'll respond with the files you need and I'll give you instructions.

Why would you ask for an updated firmware on a deck you don't have if you still have the stock unit?

I didn't ask for a updated firmware, I was just simply asking if I were to get the updated version, it would still work.

It absolutely would. But i'd have to give you the version compatible with your deck.

I have been looking at these head units and decided I want one, but then I noticed that not once do I see that they support Sirius/XM connectivity, which is a deal breaker for me.

I don't think any Aftermarket head unit would have SiriusXM Built-in but if it does have it, it would need get a tuner to get SiriusXM, like this one.

Fwiw, SiriusXM has an android app which would let you use it via your cellular data connection. Run the app on the head unit, and use the data connecion from your phone as a hot spot. You can even customize music preferences to a certain extent, in ways you can't with a normal satelite radio head unit/tuner.

ALL controls works EXCEPT for the hang up, call button, and the voice prompt button.

I've never seen the big fuss with not being able to use these 3 buttons. Considering i don't ever receive/make calls.

Question for those using this radio with an aftermarket sub, are you using the front RCA outs or the subwoofer RCA out?

Instead of hacking the wires, has anyone with a Bose system tried the
Pac MazatoPac Mazato
adapter with this unit? Might save a lot of headaches and signal strength/balance issues.

BTW, just to verify, the new GA5163F does indeed work perfectly with the Bose system. No modifications needed. Now I just need to root so I can change the dpi.

"works" perfectly or "sounds" perfectly?

huge difference, and all these HUs are notoriously horrible sounding if you are coming from a Bose system.

I'm still going to argue that they do not sound bad at all. I'd compare it to the Harmon Kardon that was in my MINI Cooper S. The HK system might have a touch more "thump" but it also had an oem sub in the hatch where as my non Bose Mazda does not.

Aka if I had a very small sub installed it would be very comparable.

It's from the issue with the older units that you need to solder RCA plugs for the speaker outs of the harness and use the respective RCA outs. Unless you did it, the volume control would be very sensitive because the signal is being amplified again by the OE amp.

With the built-in equalizer set to flat, it sounds horrible. However, with the eq set to my liking, it sounds MUCH better than the Bose headunit. It had overly loud midbass and upper midrange frequencies I could never adequately tune out with just the bass treble controls.

However, I do notice some hiss when the volume is up but nothing is playing. This may have to do with poweramp being open but not playing (and not being a default or factory app). Rom vs Mcu conflict/quirk maybe.

Also, the preamp voltage seems low, as I had to crank up the gain on my sub amp. Alternately, this could have been due to the bose headunit's horribly processed and manipulated output. Way too much midbass in relation to lower bass frequencies. I had to have the cut off frequency much lower than I do now. Seems much more balanced and natural now.

Just installed it yesterday, so I'm still figuring out quirks and making adjustments (in hindsight having the amp under the driver seat may not have been the best idea). I have yet to even mess with other roms/kernels/mcus.

Just some tidbits of information to share. You can easily get root privilege with the stock rom by going to Settings->Factory Settings and when prompted for the password enter

*#hct#root#

You will now have a new tab under settings for Superuser. It's fricken built right in to the rom (I'm only used to that in custom roms). Think I might switch to SuperSu though.

It's nice to be able to freeze the built in apps I don't use with Titanium Backup, as well as tweak the kernel with Trickster Mod. It occured to me running anything besides performance governor is silly since there's no battery to kill. I'll just need to watch the cpu temp for a bit. Also, I changed the scheduler to noop (from cfq) and increased the read ahead buffer to 1024 from a paltry 64. Additionally, I enabled zram compression since we only have 1gb ram. Thing is much smoother now, and I'll update if any issues arise.

Lastly switching to Nova Launcher and changing dpi to 180 have made this sooo much easier to use.

Just out of curiosity, has anyone tried to splice into the wiring harness at the bluetooth module to try to get the phone swc to work?

From the instructions here, it looks like that is what you have to do to get the PAC swc adapters to work.

Just ordered this mf, others have had luck with it for different head units. Retains all swc (including phone buttons), stock mic, and allows programmable lcd screen text. Bonus, it allows for Bose amp customization: stock amp gain, centerpoint on/off, centerpoint gain, balance/fader. Wonder if it swallows.

"The RP4-MZ11 interface allows the replacement of a factory radio in select Mazda vehicles with MS-CAN radios. Using this interface will retain factory features such as steering wheel controls (SWC), programming of the clock on the OEM LCD screen, vehicle information on the OEM LCD screen and the BOSE amplifier when the original radio is removed. Use of this interface also allows you to program two radio functions to each SWC button by using short press long press dual command functionality. The RP4-MZ11 also provides data bus driven outputs such as retained accessory power (RAP), vehicle speed sensor (VSS), illumination, reverse trigger and parking break."

I'll update when it's in.

With the added cost of that, this radio is becoming the not so cheap replacment radio. Keep us posted on how well it works and if it really does do everything it says and if it plays nice with the GA5163F.

Yes, but most other radios don't run android. There are some cool things you can do with that too that Pioneer, Kenwood, etc don't have.

For me one of the biggest reasons for paying the price for this radio vs pioneer/alpine is the fact that when people see it they can not believe it is an aftermarket radio. It looks really good in the dash.

i had bought it for the above reason. there are some minor flaws to it but it works as intended. i had gone to car toys and asked them about a double din dvd receiver and they quoted me $750 in parts and labor. and that was just for a $250 receiver. so $450 for a drop in unit was great and i can do a whole lot more with it then the one i was going to buy.

Hey, I have a quick question. I just installed ga5163f. It was plug and play but it does not sound right. Volume it's really sensitive and loud even on 1. Also don't think the sub woofer is on. My car has Bose system, so do I need to splice up Rca outs?
Thanks
