Default Top Mount Turbo Speed3

Do to me being in the right place at the right time, I came across this offer which I could not refuse. The prototype PERM Tuning Twisted Top Mount Turbo Kit for the speed 3. After deciding to go for it, eric@edgeautosport and I drove down from Denver to Rio Rancho NM friday after work to begin wrenching on my car. The top mount kit had already been removed from the car it had been built for and the plan was to install it on my car saturday and then head back to denver on sunday.

We started taking apart my incredibly hot car friday night and finished on saturday morning. The tear down was relatively quick and painless.

Anyways, enough typing... Here are some pictures from the Gopro that was mounted in the top of the garage.


























We didn't quite get finished on saturday like we had hoped. All that was left for sunday morning was wiring in the the split second controller for the fiffy port and installing the Deatschwerks in tank fuel pump.











The car fired up with no leaks so we all piled in to do some tuning.





Due to a loose coupler our first attempt at a pull resulted in failure. The loud THWUMP of either a coupler blowing off or a rod escaping the block...

A quick check behind us to see if we are trailing oil...


Nope, so it must be a coupler.

We spend the next hour in a turn lane in the middle of the road eventually pushing it off to the side where we waited for Garage Nurse to come pick up DJ so he could go get some tools to come back and reinstall the cold pipe. Apparently we were all so excited to ride in the top mount speed 3 that we didn't bring any tools with us to combat the inevitable failure... lol!

Anyway, after getting the coldpipe back on we found even more failure when the CFM fuel tap sprung a leak at the same time as my upper radiator hose. We made it back to PERM Manor and fixed the issues with a new radiator hose and a new CFM Fuel tap (probably stolen from burn813's fifth port injection kit). With problems solved and no time left to tune, Eric and I hit the road back to Denver being careful not to boost so we don't have an issue with any more blown couplers.

We are currently in the process of working out a couple small bugs before tuning can begin. The turbo of choice for now is the HTA3586, and Dustin's goal with the setup is to run 500whp and 375wtq. Depending on spool, I may change it out later for a GTX3076...

Everything installed and ready to exit the garage.


I will keep this thread updated as new developments arise...

I'll be getting some better pictures of the fully installed setup pretty soon. The turbo is an HTA3586.

The manifold looks very nice! Now, I come from superchargers so I have no idea what benefits a top mount manifold provides. (Gonna go do some googling) Why the low trq goal, with a 500hp target? Seems you could easily make torque more than that


EDIT: Back from Google. Seems to be for ease of getting at the turbo and to show it off but no really performance difference between bottom-mount vs top-mount. Still, the engine bay pic looks pretty sweet

It's a grandpa motor, with 95k miles on the clock. 375 is simply a safe way to 500 without breaking gramp's legs. Once Alan builds the bottom end, the sky is the limit....

MAF sensor lives in the cold pipe now, so no easy way to measure inlet temps to the turbo without adding a probe.

I'm not sure if they are running speed density or a blow through setup. With speed density (which I assume is what they are using.) there is no need for a MAF therefore no way to monitor IAT unless you run a thermometer right next to the air filter.

Ahh gotcha, should have noticed that when looked at the pic with intake directly on Turbo. Any more challenging to tune like this? Are you guys going to 4 corners meet? I am and would like to see this! Looks sick!

I like. But it kinda sucks that the intake is right over the ex mani. The other top mount setups had the turbo spun 180° like the stock snail. Any reason for the current setup?

I guess you do save money not having a full intake.

I guess you do save money not having a full intake.
It has to do with fitment. There are several fitment issues when the turbo is flipped the other way.

It has nothing to do with the clutch.

It has to do with the fact that it's a stock motor with 95k on the chicken leg rods.

Putting more than 375 lb/ft through them will easily ventilate the block.

I ran out of injector DC at 20 psi on my 4gal E mix. Once I can afford it 5th port is going in.

Do you have plans to make a turbo inlet? It doesn't look like there is much room for an inlet of any kind, lol. Looks tits though, hopefully we start to see more of these!

just to give everyone an idea on how long of a weekend this was.

We removed top mount kit from first car.
We removed Alans drop in 3071.
Put top mount kit on Alans car.
Stocked out speed3 that had top mount on it.

It was very very tirering ... but worth it.
