Default Car caught on fire, FML

Last weekend I went road racing with NASA at the Texas World Speedway and during the last session on Saturday the car caught on fire.

I was coming out on the straightaway and the engine cut power for a split second. I did not think much about it as it had happened before, although it was a long time ago and I was still on the stock k04. Midway through the lap I started smelling fuel, should have immediately shut the engine down and pulled to the nearest corner station, but I was not really sure it was mine as the car was still running strong and there were other cars around me. Was about to come out on the straightaway again when white smoke started coming into the cabin. My first thought was "fuck, the engine is blown" so I turned into the hot pits and rolled to the workers at the gate. Then it hit me my engine bay was on fucking fire, so I finally shut the car down, popped the hood, and got the fuck out of the car. Two guys ran over with fire extinguishers and sprayed the powder all over under the hood. We waited for a while, then decided to raise the hood and as we did there was still a flame on the fucking fuel line! We pushed the car into the garage area, I rinsed the car down the best I could, and then we pushed it to another spot where it would wait for a tow.

Got the car towed to the shop today and started tearing into it. Here are some pictures of the carnage, more to come.

@aggierandy; @S-hendrix; @Manuel; @EyeKon;

It looks line a fuel line either ripped or came loose and fuel started spraying around engine bay and caught on fire.

@JDW1; @StayBroke; I will post an official WTB thread tonight, but you can see more or less what I need to get the car back up and running:

- whole fuse box and harness that goes into it
- another harness that goes behind the battery into the cabin
- ignition coil harness
- probably both o2 sensors (the connectors may be melted, I could not see)
- vacuum harness/lines and fuel lines
- basically any cables, hoses, connectors that are on the driver side of the engine
- brake master cylinder and reservoir including the connection that goes into it
- HPFP or at least the spill valve
- under hood insulator and air inlet duct
- cowl
- turbo oil and water lines

I will be buying brand new:

- battery
- intake (maybe)
- EBCS

More pictures and description to follow.

That's terrible - was it the hard line or one of the softer low pressure lines?

I'll go poke around in the garage and see if i have stuff laying around. The things you need are pretty specific so i wont have much of anything, but if i do just cover shipping and its yours. I know i have an oil drain line, but im not sure if they're the same for 3 and 6. I'm assuming they're not?

Other things of interest:

- surprisingly, the SURE silicone intake survived the inferno, the silicone around the nipple is a bit crusty but otherwise the intake is in a pretty good shape. I will still most likely replace it with a new intake just to be on the safe side, will go with 3.5" JBR, @atvfreek; will be paging you sir soon for a retune.

- fate was not so kind to Lex's EBCV, it is possible it is still functioning but I had to cut the connector to get it out as the connector was all melted

- the new @CorkSport; BPV appears to be unscathed although it is covered in soot

@Lex; I think it must have been one of the softer lines, I think it would be a great idea to develop something aftermarket that is more robust.

Can't you go through insurance? I know it was at the track but it wasn't an accident, it was a fire...I would call em up and see.

The fire was definitely due to the SURE intake....I'm SURE

Ditch that bish!

@Lex; I think it must have been one of the softer lines, I think it would be a great idea to develop something aftermarket that is more robust.
What's your address?? Let me have the guys send out some new O-rings just in case they were compromised.

Judging by a few of the pics, it was either the hardline junction (they will leak with the tiniest scratch; ask me how I know) or the blue clip fuel line into the pump which looks like it took a good deal of damage from fire; the yellow clip return line looks as though most of the damage it got was on the side that's next to the blue clip line.

Wondering if this HPFP is any good, it needs a new spill valve as the connector is melted but I have no idea whether there is anything inside that could be damaged in heat?

It would be nice to have stainless steel blue and yellow fuel lines....

There is a check valve that the hard line connects to, and a washer spring + pulsation damper behind the cover that doesn't get taken off when you rebuild the pump, as well as the springs in the spill area (for the needle and the button) that could potentially suffer from heat damage.

Do yourself a favor and get a new pump, just to be safe.

Yeah, I forgot to put it in the OP, but in addition to getting the failboat back on the road, I will add a fire extinguisher and a kill switch. If this happened not at the track but on my way home (the speedway is 20 minutes away from my house), the car would be a goner for sure.

Will be paging Edge for Autotechs, thanks. I called Bryan at BNR and he said the turbo should be fine, but if it got deformed from the heat, it should go out of balance pretty soon, and I would know.

Actually the internals might be the one thing that's still safe to use; they would have been buried deep in the pump/head and may not have become too hot, especially if they are made from tool steel.

Ok, I will take the pump apart and see, I have a spare stocker here so maybe I can do a simple swap.

It would be nice to have stainless steel blue and yellow fuel lines....

I am seriously considering yanking the A/C as we work on restoring the car....
Back in the day we had Russell build some fuel line fittings for Mustangs that were prone to having fuel line failures and fires. It's worth a shot.

Before jumping to an aftermarket fuel line, investigate what leaked and why it leaked. Making fuel lines that clip properly and are safer is not trivial - the OEMs are quite safe as it is. Perhaps the clip or line was not inserted properly or worn? Definitely look for a root cause before jumping on a solution.

What temps are the stock soft fuel lines rated to? The highest BATs I was seeing on the k04 were 160, the highest BATs I see on the BNR are 200. Is it possible my under hood temps were consistently 40-50 degrees higher and the stock rubber could not handle it over time, got brittle, and finally cracked? I will examine the clips, I have not touched them in many months so I doubt they were not inserted properly but being worn may be an option.

Btw, I just ordered a new EBCV.

I chopped up one of the OE fuel lines, and took pics here. I thought the part #'s might be handy if someone wanted to track down the material.
