Default Gas smell with heater on

So i am getting this wierd issue. If the car sits and idles for a period of time with the heat on it gets a really gassy smell.

A bit of background about a month ago dealship fixed VVT, no issues with that at all. but used crappy dealer oil that i havent changed out yet not sure if this could have an effect or not.

Now if i just turn it on auto letting the heat run with the A/C on i dont get that smell.
if i turn the A/C off it does. I do not smell gas outside of the car.
For example this morning had heat on like 85, car wasnt completly up to temp yet but i left it on while i went into the store. No gas smell when i got out. got back in bad gas smell inside but did not smell it before i got in.

It also seems if i am driving down the highway i dont get a gas smell.
This weekend going to switch back to T6 but i wouldnt think oil would cause this.

Any thoughts.

I doubt oil will make a difference, I would maybe have the dealership take a look at your fuel pump (in-tank) and tank seals.

Maybe change your cabin air filter?

Do gen 1's have a cabin filter?

I also just had a thought, when the heat is on its not recircing the air in the cabin its pulling air in from the outside. Anyone know where this air gets pulled in at, maybe when they took the top of the motor apart they got some gas from the HPFP connections close to this inlet

Not every car, but ours does. PITA to replace. Check ebay for cheap knock-off replacement filters. Should be about $10.

Might also want to check injector seals. Failing seals can lead to gas smell under the hood.

I am sure its not to bad, but it just why would they make a consumable item like a filter so hard to get to. Most normal people are just gona get raped by the dealer to get it done because they wont want to do it.

They made the Gen 2 filter ridiculously easy to change.
Anyhow, might not actually sole your problem though, I would look into the source of your problem.

If it's random KR, then do some datalogs for some daily driving and set your monitor to look at KR.

That's a good question, I just upgraded mine to remove any possibility of knock.
Figure I was already in there for a valve cleaning.

Maybe some of the tuner guys can pipe in and give some insight as to what the datalog symptoms are for bad injector seals.

I've been getting the same thing lately. Drive for a while and stop at a light and I get a gas smell unless I got recirc on the fan. I thought maybe I had an exhaust leak from my Corksport DP, but it's tight. I'm thinking it is the injector seals. I've got near 107k miles running 18-19psi now for most of the car's lifetime. I've got a set of PTP seals waiting to go in.

So it seems I have a very gassy smell under the hood as well. Guess I am going to have to get new seals.

What to use sure halos or the Toyota seals

Meh.. I got Halos cause I like SURE, but I hear those Toyota seals are a good cheaper option.
I just figure if you're going to go through the trouble of taking off your manifold, and fuel rail, injectors, etc...
Why not install a product that is meant and designed for our cars.

Ok here is a 3rd gear log i took on the way home.

Fuel pressure look good, when i got done driving around, the last 8-10 minutes of driving was normal in town driving. i popped the hood with the motor running to see if i could smell any gassy smell. Not really, if i practically put my nose on the IM i would get a very faint gas smell but nothing like i do in the morning.

Could the car not being completely warmed up when i notice this be a factor.

You need some boost control massaging, lol.

Other than that, it looks fine. I'd say it's not the injector seals.

Are you sure you just weren't catching a whiff of the exhaust?

Yea I know my wgdc tables need a bit of work. I don't think so pretty sure I don't have an exhaust leak but I could just be being a bit paranoid due to the dealer just doing some work to it

If you park in a garage, smell first thing in the morning after it's been sitting all night in an enclosed space.

This is different than that, it doesnt smell like a gassy exhaust it smells like straight up gas like if you stuck your nose next to a open gas can.

It seems to only happen in the morning when i am driving and the car isnt completly up to temp. once it is the problem seems to go away.

But my logs seem fine havent lost any power and car is not driving funny or making any strange noises, so i still think its some fluke

I get the same thing... Just started to notice it, but it also just started to get cold enough to require heat.

My smell reminds me of the smell from draining the occ.

I have the same problem. It started after I installed hpfp internals. I just recirc the air and it doesn't happen anymore, but I would like to solve the problem indefinitely. Sounds like no one ever found any real solution.

gas in the oil causing the smell? read a post yesterday about certain oil being diluted with gas and being able to smell the gas off dipstick.

cold weather + dilution = smell?

becuzz race car...

are you running catless?

I was about to ask the same question cuz it sounds similar to what I experienced after installing a catless dp..it only happened the first few days after but I think it stopped doing it for whatever reason

No not catless. Full Cobb TBE. the issue seems to have resolved itself now. i no longer get the smell. I think when the dealer fixed my VVT they might have got a bit of gas in the ac system inlet, which might have been the cause. But i think my cat might be failing cause i get weird intermittent downstream O2 cel
