Help! My stubborn car won't fill up with gas

Hello everybody,

I am hoping somebody can help me with this issue I have been having. I have searched the forum and only found one other similar thread with no conclusive responses. I found other similar threads on other forums for the regular Mazda 3, but nobody seemed to solve it and let's face it...those guys aren't as smart as you guys on here. :cool2:

Anyways, about 2-3 months ago my car started being stubborn and not wanting to take fuel at the pump. It would go about $2 at a time and then the pump would click and then stop. At first I thought maybe it had something to do with the cold weather, but now it has been getting worse. The last few times I have tried filling up, it is only taking gas 10 cents at a time! This is very frustrating and annoying. I have tried pumping slower, moving the handle around, etc. with no success. The fuel even spills back out of the filler neck. This leads me to believe there is some sort of blockage somewhere? Maybe in the filler tube itself or the vent tube?

I was wondering if anybody on here has had a similar issue or knows for sure how to resolve it? I am going to start troubleshooting this weekend but I read fuel related parts that could fix this issue are anywhere between $250-600 and I'd rather not be spending money to guess as I have a wedding to pay for in 22 days.

Please chime in if you are able to help me!

Thank you,

I had this issue a few months ago when it was bitter cold. But fuel would come back out as pressure built because the vent was clogged. I assume it was some sort of frozen moisture as I was able to fill it the next day.
I am wondering if you have some sort of bug that made a cocoon in your vent tube.
Id say take the canister off and check the vent lines. Two that come in from fuel tank and T together and go into canister and then the one that goes from canister to the leak detector LF66-18-581A. What I dont get is where the vent tube on the filler goes but I guess it feeds back into the filler before the rubber hose:

Must be a clog in the canister or bad leak detector. I assume if you undid hose going into leak detector and tried putting fuel in and was able to than you know it is issue. If still same issue it is likely the canister so you could undo lines from tank to it and should be able to fill tank. I would expect you have a EVAP not ready or something like Leak detector pump CEL.

Look in service manual for EVAP troubleshooting...IDK I dont own a 3.

You can see where the vent line on MS6 goes to something in another diagram:

I have struggled with my own issues involving these parts:

I've heard if you top off a lot, it can plug the canister or something like that, and prevent filling

I get reasonable mileage in my car, but the small gas tank limits it. I feel your pain. I top off.

Here is a thread with a diagram of the tank that might help.

Ok so fluid goes in the tank and displaces air. This air goes through a charcoal filter to the atmosphere. When the system that lets the air out stops working/clogged the air comes out the filler neck. The pump see's this as a full tank so it shuts off. So I would guess that the air can't get out of the tank. anything from a clogged hose or rusted valve (thank the person who thought salt and car's was a good combo) can be your problem. GL.
