someone please correct me if i'm wrong -- and i'm just speaking from SOME possible knowledge...

but my understanding is if you run a reduction coupler... lets use easy numbers... like 4" tubing to a 3" tubing, you'll only really get to use the full capacity and flow of the 3" and the 4" tubing isnt really serving its purpose...

now if you run a 3" with a coupler that brings it to 4" -- like your picture -- aren't you only going to get whatever air comes through the 3" and not fully fill up the 4" TIP?

in other words...
from my first example, if you take 20 cubic inches from a 4" tube and try to put it in a 3" tube, you'll probably only get about 15 cubic inches to fit inside

from my second example, if you take 15 cubic inches from the 3" tube and try to fit it in the 4" tube, you'll still only have 15 cubic inches

some one please correct me if i'm wrong -- but thats just my logic and simple knowledge of space consumption

well...speaking from a flow perspective (using bernoullis equation)...and assuming your flow rate stays constant....increasing the cross section will cause the velocity of the fluid to decrease and a pressure increase...you will have the same volumetric flow rate (and the same mass flow rate assuming your density hasnt changed)...ie...the volume of air in the 3" pipe has expanded to fill the 4" pipe and in doing so has slowed down...you are always going to fill up the container you are putting the air in...by its nature air will expand to fill whatever it is in...but something will change...whether that be velocity or density or whatever....it all depends on the conditions....now...what does that mean for the turbo and why you wouldnt just stick with a constant 4" or 3" pipe...that I am unsure of

but i think what you want to do is minimize your pressure drop across the intake track...if you go from a 2" sri to a 4" inlet you are going to have a huge pressure drop...where if you go from a 4" to a 4" you will have no pressure drop and that is most efficient...

so what that means is ideally...you want an intake track the EXACT same cross section as your turbo inlet (the inlet on the turbo itself)

see attached hand calcs and see if they make sense....

thank you for nerd-ifying that -- and thats EXACTLY what i was going for

but seriously thank you lol -- i'd like to understand, myself, if there are any benefits or disadvantages to the increase in cross section

you can only flow as much as your greatest restriction will allow, unless u use force but u dont have anything pushing on the inlet side of the turbo

Wouldn't worry about it until you get there.

My throttle body was the biggest choke point on my last car. I had a MAP setup after I realized MAFs are garbagio.
