I mean we all are pretty much. I'm just looking for a really good street tire Tht doesn't last a month lol..

And thts weird the companies site showed me the kit was over $5000

And $2800 is still $1000 more than the other kits... Is there anything special about these calipers and rotors other than they are a 2 piece right?

Read the brake thread, there is nothing else like it for us. The kit is still pending a track test though, will have my impression next Monday.

The PB44L PowerBrake setups have a few advantages that I can think of right off the bat:

- No major pad tapering issues (due to each of the 4 pads in each caliper having it's own piston)

- Much stiffer caliper body (due to the huge permanent bridge that doesn't need to be be removed for pad changes) and mounting scheme (radially mounted on their brackets vs. axially).

- I don't have the exact specs to compare here right now, but I believe the rotor swept area and overall pad contact area of the PB44L kits is significantly larger than all of the Wilwood kit options.

Ok thts some good factual info on this brake setup... I wonder Wat in terms of braking feet, how much better or similar the bbk's are

Here is an interview with my mechanic Bill about the upcoming close of the TWS, there is also a second clip from 1993 where Bill sports a 'stache.

If you want to do real racing, and I don't mean track days, you would be better off building an SCCA Spec Miata and go racing with that. You can learn more about going fast driving something with little or no power than you ever can with something having a lot of power. I say this having had over 2 decades of racing experience (see my signature) plus being an HPDE instructor for several years after retiring. You can't learn momentum driving in a high HP car unless you already know how to do it. This is why top F1 and other open wheel racing drivers get their start in karting. The low HP car I got a lot of experience in was an SCCA ITA 1972 Mazda RX-2 rotary sedan.
As for brakes on an MS3 any setup using Wilwood 4-6 pistol calipers and bigger rotors will be in the range of nearly as much braking force as the car's stock master cylinder and parts can take. You really want 2 pistons per pad not 1 per pad. Problem from racing is that a pad will get bowed out on the ends if it has pressure from only one piston. I raced for a number of years in single piston brake caliper Mazdas and it was not easy to keep the pads wearing even. When I switched to racing a Mustang that has the same calipers as the Vette (PBRs) I found that wear could be controlled much better with 2 pistons (although to be honest I went thru Hawk pads and OEM rotors almost at the rate of a set every race weekend and we though that was good wear). Do not disable the ABS system. This is advice I got from Boris Said when we were both racing for Steeda (at different levels). Its good for at least 1 second per lap over a non-ABS system. Even more in the wet. I loved racing in the rain. I have some in car race video somewhere of me passing a Ferrari 348 Challenge car that had the race pole position in my SCCA T-2 1995 Mustang Cobra in the rain. He never got back around me either.
JBR, svd and ItsNox like this.

I am on my third year of road racing and I look forward to many lessons that both the Mazdaspeed and the Miata will hopefully provide.

Im sure you can relate to this as well @Code Monkey; but i like to tinker. If i want to do a mod, i dont want to be bound by some class rules that say i cant do that you know. I dont doubt the credibility of running something class specific, but its just not for me. At least not at this time.

Still looking forward to trying the miata on track though. I remember my first ms3 handling like a dream (coming from an Sn-95 mustang though), but theirs certain fun corners i take in that thing compared the NB and i feel like im holding on for dear life.

At the time being, the modifications done to and planned for both the Miata and the Mazdaspeed are constrained only by my imagination and money and I want to keep it this way. Once you start racing for prizes, there has to be class rules, and your wallet will probably thank you as well as there is only so much you are allowed to do.

The PB44L calipers ≠ single piston Mazda calipers

Having witnessed how the pads wear with these calipers, I can say that no such "bowing" is detectable, and that the pads wear quite evenly across their surfaces.

Also looks like its a fixed caliper? I was under the impression that a lot of bowing is due to the design of most floating calipers?

In my experience it is from heat.

Well, the June 20-21 HPDE at the TWS got canceled -- I guess too many people assumed the speedway would be closed and made plans elsewhere -- but this gives me 3 months of sorting the car out.

First, I want to get some "small fish" things out of the way:

-- battery relocation to the trunk
-- hood pins and hood struts
-- general maintenance

I got a battery relocation kit from HTP and ghetto mounted it in the trunk. I just need to granny the car 2 miles to the shop and the shop will make a custom battery box next to the meth tank. There are more things coming that I am super excited about but let's take it one step at a time.....

The hot cable for the battery relocation weighs 6.6 lbs so of course I am routing it on the passenger side.

Yes. The box is wedged pretty good between the meth tank and the body, but the battery was still moving a bit in the box so I tied the battery down with a belt.

The battery is a Braille B2015. I got the HTP relocation kit but without the tray or jack relocation bracket. My old HTP battery tray for the Braille is for sale; some engine bay pictures here.

The battery is mounted! @Matt@HTP;

The shop used an old ammo box, the fit is perfect, and everything is super secure, the lid has a latch on the side facing the rear and in addition there are two wing nuts that secure it on top, shit is not going anywhere.

I may have something running over/above the hood prop, therefore blocking it....

Hey Rafal, have you always had the shroud off your TMIC? Ive heard it needs to be there, otherwise it bleeds off a ton of pressure and doesn't cool as well and all that, and now that i actually have a magnehelic gauge i'm tempted to test that theory on my new-to-me ETS since it didn't come with one.

Basically take a pressure reading with stock IC and shroud and take another with ETS and no shroud. I figure it anyone noticed anything though it'd be someone like you.

I always run the shroud. This time however, I dismantled a lot of stuff at home and the shop is only 2 miles away so I did not bother putting the shroud back on for such a short drive. In a few weeks I will not need the shroud anyway.

Yeah, you can see the custom crash bar in the making above. This should give me many options as to how to route the hot pipe, should be (relatively) short and sweet.

The crash bar is finished. It tucks perfectly in under the front bumper so we could open up the whole grill. The mockup intercooler is a stock Evo X FMIC, but I will use something else for the final setup.

Now, regarding the BPV, I read somewhere that you want it as close as possible to the throttle body, but then I see some folks running the BPV on the hot side. Any advice on the placement?

Typically a BOV on the hot side is when you've gone blow through and put the MAF in the cold side. The reason you can put it there is you no longer have to recirc any air back to the intake since its getting blown off Pre-MAF. This makes making a custom FMIC very easy because you can just get a generic V-band flanged pipe on the hotside and add a V-band flanged BOV. Thats what i did, but having to plan for more power really made things hard for me on the MAF side.

Ive also got a small sheet metal brake and a little left over material if you plan on trying to duct that bad boy, i could always use practice for when it comes time to do it on the miata

I put it on the hotpipe because I it was really close to my 5th port injector otherwise and I didn't want fuel recirculating as well as air. No thottle response complaints.
