Did another HPDE weekend with the local PDS (Performance Driving School), write up to follow up soon, right now I want to focus on something else.

Last month when I was testing the 275 tires, I also did ITS or Instructor Training School with the PDS. They usually do two weekends of training and if you pass you are good to instruct with them.... I passed on Saturday and had my first student yesterday Sunday, an older guy driving a 2014 Corvette, the guy was very happy with my guidance and he will be bumped from the green noobie group to blue next time. It feels really great and fulfilling to instruct someone and see how, with a couple hints here and there, they become much much faster.

My road racing schedule is really busy for the remainder of this year:

Code:
06aug2016-07aug2016	PDS instructor training, 275 tires
10sep2016-11sep2016	PDS instructor training + Sunday instructing
17sep2016-18sep2016 Chin instructing
01oct2016-02oct2016 PDS instructing
12nov2016-13nov2016 Chin instructing
19nov2016-20nov2016 PDS instructing
02dec2016 MOM instructing
03dec2016-04dec2016	WRL COTA, '88 Ford Mustang with Oh Wow Racing
17dec2016-18dec2016	PDS instructing
Edit: Just got a word from Chin Motorsports that I am also eligible to instruct with them; updated the schedule accordingly.

Edit: Also instructing at COTA with Momentum Performance Driving Academy (MOM).

Now for the bad news.... Second session on Sunday I was coming out of the carousel (turn 11), started adding throttle, and the car suddenly died. The instrument cluster went completely black, car lost all power, shifted into neutral and had enough momentum to coast into my garage space. The pig would not restart after that, the starter would click once and that was it. Tried to turn the engine over by hand and it was solid like a rock, not budging at all. I think the engine is seized, it was a quart, maybe 1.5 quarts low on oil, and with wider tires and pulling more g's in the corners I think something died of oil starvation. The Racepig is already in the shop, Bill will find a spot for me and I will start tearing down the car. The new engine will have a BSD and a windage tray + some other improvements.... Stay tuned.

So sorry, man. Loved creepily following your racing threads while I slowly try to work into the minor leagues.

If you're ever up at NJMP for any of your various events let me know. Especially if you get the MS6 back on the track!

There's a company that makes a dry sump for duratecs. Should fit our engine: Performance Engines and Parts Manufacturer | Racing Engine | Dry Sump Systems | Flywheels

Also, Cosworth makes one too iirc

Just reread. You should still have electrical power even if the engine seized, so something else might be going on. Not being able to turn it over might just be coincidence, and I'd try pulling the plugs and trying again.

Check electrical system things

Hmmm.
I don't think "seized due to oil starvation"
It's possible it jumped timing and you had interference issues.
Oil starvation problems would have exploded that engine at that high rpm - I think.

Pretty good what you did there. I know if it was me I would have dumped that fucking clutch in 3rd gear while the car was coasting and see what happens. May be that's why I fail so much?

Had a great weekend instructing with Chin Motorsports. My student drove a 2015 Corvette Z51 and that was her first weekend ever as a driver. Her boyfriend tracks an FRS and his best time was a 2:07. We beat that time by the third session on Saturday and she ended the weekend with a 2:05.20. She still has lots to learn and needs to stay consistent so I kept her in green. It is disgusting how good the Vette is, I have no recollection how long it took me to get down to a 2:05 in my Mazdaspeed6 but it took quite a while.

The Racepig is in the shop, the Miata is in my garage disassembled, so I tested this little turd I bought for dd duties for the upcoming visit by my parents -- a 1991 Civic Si. Manual steering, no ABS, drum brakes in the rear, you get the idea. Did a few laps in the intermediate group and managed to pass one car on Sunday.

This week is pretty busy but I will try to stop by the shop Thursday or Friday and start digging into the Racepig.

One of the woman I run with at NJMP newer vette and they're fantastic cars. She can really rip it up in that car. Raced a Caymen before it and she says the vette is faster. There are some 911s I can run down if the drivers are sloppy, but there's nothing I can do to even stay in frame with her.

Still have not had time to stop by the shop but Bill just called me with the news. He pulled the spark plugs and can see the crankshaft through cylinder #3 . So I guess there is a hole in the piston.

I, of course, treat this as an opportunity to finally have a built engine. The goal is about 370whp/370wtq and I want to be able to rev to 7500-7700 all day long, although with a BSD that may not be a good idea for road racing. I think right now the only question is what kind of valvetrain I need for higher revs? I will most likely be running 5th/6th port for aux fueling and will be switching to an EFR 7163.

Sorry to hear about your engine. But congrats on becoming an instructor. I long dreamed of being one when I was doing trackdays on the motorcycle.

Do you have a youtube channel? Man, I would love to see that car in action on the track from the outside.

Good luck with your build. With that motor the vette girl wont be able to keep up.

You can run any Duratec valve springs that are out there.

I wish we could run the duratec heads easily for cheap cams lol

You shouldn't need to go to much stiffer springs. I wouldn't go any stiffer than Crower's 65lb option and even that's pretty extreme. Our valves are pretty light, hell I'd look into lightening the valves like @Tomas; did before considering heavier springs. Other than springs you really don't need to upgrade anything to get more revs out of it, maybe consider strong rod bolts to be on the safe side.

Might be worth it to look into a slightly more aggressive cam grind to get a better high RPM performance since I'm sure the stockers leave a good amount on the table past 7k. Might want to get ahold of @Enki; for that one.

I might possibly by some super small chance be doing some droF balance shaft testing for work, when I get some more results I'll give my input on that.

Ya im running the crower 65lb springs... ive heard of other options but from talkin to a few peeps, like @Mazdazilla6; is saying there inst really a need for it... Porting on the head would help with flow at those high RPMs but isnt necessarily needed...

Stay tuned.

Here's the spark plug from cylinder #3 , I will start removing shit around the engine next week in preparation for removal and disassembly to see what failed.

Well after looking at some test results at work and talking with some of the engineers who've done a lot of balance shaft testing I would say pull that shit and don't look back. The only actual downside to having no balance shaft is the large gain in vibes. The sole purpose is to quell vibes at lower RPM areas.

This article: Keep Your Balance Shafts ? Jacks Transmissions is full of shit. The engineers I've talked to have hundreds, possibly thousands of hours of run time testing balance shafts. Furthermore, one of them brought up a good point and that is not all 3 and 4 cylinder engines even use balance shafts. If it actually had a mechanical advantage in preserving the drivetrain then every 4 banger would have one.

Removing it won't make much of a difference other than losing weight. The amount of power it takes to drive it is pretty much negligible (it's like 2-4Nm). If you do get rid of it, consider lightening the crank up a bit by knocking off the ring gear that drives the balance shaft assembly as well.

It actually matters more the higher in RPM you go as the accelerations of the pistons increase. Its there because the pistons accelerate faster at the top of the stroke than at the bottom so even a perfectly mass balanced 4 cylinder engine will experience it. Its purely a NVH thing, unless there was some accessory attached to the motor that had a natural frequency somewhere in the 30 to 300hz range, which is really low as those things go. All of the rotating components (bearings etc) will see these forces with or without the balance shaft installed.

Well, I supposed technically you could say the crank will experience less thrust loading because the balance shaft gears have helical teeth so if you take it out that gear set won't be there to put a thrust load on the crank. Albeit it's a very minimal amount.

@code_monkey; can't wait to see you go EFR7163, that's my dream build one day... That would be one hell of a turbo for track work, although I've talked extensively with @Alpha; and you won't need 5th/6th port for aux fueling (cooling due to rich AFR's?).

Are you planning to go higher on power later? I know Alpha hit around ~425 on shitty AZ gas (think it was 89 or 91) stock injectors, no WMI.
