Looks like dirt got in the spark plug holes from the valve cover side. Probably from other cars' spray. You still have a tmic and ducting under the hood?

Edit: that cut you're experiencing could be a wet maf sensor. Look at maf voltage when you get into boost. It goes crazy when it's wet.

Here's the log I took on my way home in the rain. Note I did not technically go WOT, but I have a special road racing tune from Dr. Freek where I boost some at part throttle.

And here's what my air filter looks like after the rainy weekend. You think I sucked in some dirt through the intake and it made way into the cylinders? I still run a TMIC with under the hood ducting. I guess it is time for a pre-filter that AEM sells?

The dirt and rust are definitely coming from the valve cover side. What is the gap set to on the plugs? Set it to 0.026 often since you run the engine wot for extensive periods. Depending on how hot things get during a session you might also consider two steps colder plugs with a tight gap.

Is it possible that after the fire my coil packs are a bit warped and dirt sneaks around them and goes under the valve cover? But if so then why does the porcelain side of the spark plugs is clean and the threads are not? I think it is unlikely the spark plugs are not sealing unless I did not tighten them enough. I have my plugs gapped to .025.

At the track my BATs hit a bit over 200, no idea about the EGTs.

Porcelain part isn't dirty because that is where the coil pack seats. The tops of the packs don't seal well, so dirt gets past them pretty easily.

Looks totally normal to me.

I am going through the car and the power steering fluid is at the min level. There is a leak somewhere, I have spare o-rings in case the leak is between the pump and the reservoir. I took the skid tray off and in my usual fashion there were two bolts resting on the bottom. Anyone has any idea where they may be coming from?

BATs above 200 definitely need better cooling or less boost. To keep knock at bay with BATs that high you are losing a lot of performance.

If you want to borrow my pyrometer/tire gauge, lemme know. It's this one. I've had a lot of luck collecting data with it, and it'll give you a better picture of what kind of cold to hot temperatures you should be running. It would be a good excuse to take trip up to TWS.

I was considering one but then saw this video

If tires heat up and cool down that fast, by the time I do a cooldown lap and pit in, the readings will be useless. I use a tire marker to mark the tires and see how much roll over I have.

You should still make it to the TWS, I heard from many folks that the TWS is most enjoyable of all the TX road racing courses.

Here is a preliminary 2014 schedule:

Code:
18jan2014-19jan2014	PDS

Awesome! I would love to get the tech to wire up a setup like this someday. I also like looking at the F1 version they have.

AFAIK (if someone more knowledgeable is reading, feel free to correct me), the pyrometer readings are more related to the build-up heat in the carcass of the tire, rather than the outside skin heats and cools very quickly. I believe it's the carcass temps that have a more direct impact on air pressure and tire overheating. I did a bunch of work with tire temps and pressures here: First AutoX with MS3

Also, for figuring out cold temps (based on current ambient temperature of the tires BEFORE your run) to running hot temperatures, the gauge has got a little "compensated" feature. Not that you couldn't do the maths yourself- it's just already done for you.

I've also thought that the infrared video was a better measure of alignment, since you can tell *exactly* which portions of the tire are being used in which corner. Of course I don't own a set like this, so I'm guessing. If I'm right, it would be super useful for autocross though!

I need to finish up my motorcycle rebuild, and then for sure I'll be out there.
A couple years ago I put my long-time project miata into a tree in West Austin and since then I've decided not to race anything I can't afford to lose. So, no tracking the MS3.

I heard they are re-paving TWS and they started this week. You should see if you can get out there and enjoy the new surface.

I registered for the Jan 25-26 weekend, I will not be able to do the December event with the local group as the car is apart at the moment and the parts I need are delayed due to the recent weather.

I have my parents visiting for three months March-June so I am trying to reconcile hitting the track as much as I can and saving moniez for their visit. Instead of registering for TT with NASA in April, I will register for HPDE-4 and this way it will be easier for me to take my parents out on the track. It is still open passing but I will not be timed so I can push more than the recommended 7/10 with a passenger on board.

Btw, it really sucks that I missed the Andy Lally event, from what I heard the clinic was fantastic, you can start reading about it here. He beat everybody by around 3 seconds except two folks. One guy was only slower by 0.8 seconds, I think, and Sam my cage builder was slower by only 0.4 seconds. I know who I will be paying to coach me next year.

They know I can take them out, but they have no idea what it is like. I think I also have a couple of coworkers who want to swing by for a ride so it is possible I will have a passenger each session.

Ya nothing too crazy, as he is WOT for quite a while out there. But right now with the BNR and full catless we are getting creep to 24psi on the street. This doesn't happen so much on the track, but with the EWG we shouldn't get creep and can tune it a little better.

Glad to be a part of the build I love setting up maps that have a purpose!

You seriously need to address cooling now.........
Oil and water.

Edit. That is if you are serious about staying stock block.

An oil cooler would be great but I do not think there is a direct bolt-on for us? I have not heard about an upgraded water pump either. It will probably be another 12 months and 12 track weekends and 5,000 miles before I go forged. I have to ask a local track junkie who is running a GTX3071 IWG on his MS3 about his cooling but as far as I remember he has not done anything special cooling wise. Does not mean, of course, nothing should be done in this department.

Don't need an upgraded water pump, but there are a couple higher capacity radiators available. Just keep an eye on the water/oil temperatures, my oil temps were at 260 and climbing and water temps were 210 and climbing after a 20 minute session on a day in the 80s

My ECTs are usually around 213-217 at the track, the max I have seen was 223 or so. That was before removing the ac and the condenser, so I am hoping that with nothing in the way of the radiator, the ECTs will drop a few degrees. I tried to order the AWR racing radiator but I think they discontinued it.

No idea about the oil temps though, I need to hook up oil temp and oil pressure gauges at some point.

What aftermarket radiator options does the MS6 have? I haven't found any other than the AWR as mentioned above. The MS6 and MS3 have different rads from what I hear.

There is none AFAIK, besides the discontinued AWR.

In the 323GTX all of the cars which wanted to win and have the gearbox stay together ran transmission coolers and would dump the cooled fluid on the center carriers to keep it from overheating. I haven't seen where anyone has posted up about tracking a speed 6 as much as you plan on doing. I would get an oil cooler for the engine at a minimum.

If you have one of those IR heat guns I would shoot the rear diff too and see how hot it is getting.

I have to ask a local truck junkie who is running a GTX3071 IWG on his MS3 about his cooling but as far as I remember he has not done anything special cooling wise. Does not mean, of course, nothing should be done in this department.
@MATT DAMOND;

I thought I saw something about him producing an oil cooler kit, but I could be wrong.

Matt did a bunch of oil cooler testing when he tracked his MS6 a few years ago. He would be a good person to ask, because it took him a few different setups to get it right. It wasn't as simple as just throwing a cooler on it.

So it looks like my HPFP is fubared.... @Lex; @atvfreek; @phate; if you guys can have a look at the attached log, for example where time is 400.56 hpfp pressure dips to 525, this is me coming out of a turn in 3rd, then I upshift into 4th and at time 404.723 there is another dip in hpfp pressure to 609. Then there are several dips between time 427-437 when I am on the straightaway in 5th.

Could this be the cause of the spark misfires that has been plaguing me for some time? Here's a picture of the spark plugs after today's track day.
