Default My Engine just fell!!!

So about two weeks ago my car started to have a weird clicking noise. I took it to the dealership and they couldnt find anything at all.. about 20 mins ago i was driving on base doing 30mph and i hear a loud CLACK and the car starts jumping... Holy fuck i almost shit myself. When i open the hood, Theres the damn engine sitting SIDEWAYS! WTF!? I guess a motor mount gave out or something? wasnt abe to investigate since it just started to rain. My question is, will i have to pay out of pocket for this repair or would the dealership pay? Car is under warranty but im not sure if a motor mount(assuming thats the problem) is considered a wear and tear item... Granted the car has 34K miles and ive never seen such a thing happen..

Just posted pics, i know the engine bay is dirty as hell but as some of you may now albuquerque gets some really bad dust storms so i wasnt gona clean it untill i get back to florida.

If it is leaning towards the driver's side which it probably is, its the transmission mount which should be covered under warranty.

ha don't go in with any mods on the car. Not worth the risk. I had a cobb SRI and I was voided and they covered nothing. My official letter from Mazda said I increased the power out put of the car which sheared the mount bolt in two.

Damn.... had just put the cobb sri in and a turbosmart Bpv. Thing is thoe because the engine is sitting the way it is i cant install the stock box because its not going to fit and i cant even change out the BPV because the engine is leaning on it!

OK so i took the car to the dealership and 6 hrs later i finally got a call. They said the suspected(they still dont know what caused the problem) mounts are covered under the powertrain warranty UNDER NORMAL CIRCUMSTANCES!(his exact words) Sounds to me they know whats going on but they are still trying to see if they can find anything to where it would indicate its my fault... Just my Opinion!

Why do you think we put such a heavy emphasis on upgrading your motor mount first?

We're not trying to fuck with you. It's actually good advice.

I completely understand and been wanting too but i guess i took it for granted.. Since im away from home for such a long time i put car mods aside(ive been gone for 5 months military training). Also i bought a sportbike so my attention kind of shifted making sure i get all my riding gear etc etc.

But as soon as the dealership is done with her thats the first thing im going to upgrade right of the bat. Why would i want a part that failed put in my car again!?

Get a JBR dog bone 88 duro. It's right around $100 bucks and you'll never worry about it again.

WILL DO!

Just got the good news, the work is covered under warranty. According to the rep they have never seen anything like it. Apperently the bolt completly failed(somewhere along those lines) and the motor shifted into a position they never seen. When the motor shifted it landed on the axle causing more damage aswell. The bad news(i need to drive home end of week i hope) is 1 one of the parts is a special order only so it may take a couple days.

LESSON LEARNED, BUY SOME FCKN MOUNTS!

Glad they are covering it. Was it the bolt on the rmm or the nut in the subframe?

I have had an MS3 since 2006, when the problem was common. The bolt to the trans backs out, and either shears off and engine falls out or the actual bracket to the transmission cracks and the engine falls out. It is known, they recalled early 07-08's and the problem still happens up to 2009's.

Get them to fix it. Get the JBR or TRZ trans mount. I have 45K miles on my TRZ, no problems.

yeah get after market mounts as soon as you can. I had my transmission mount rip in half, and the passenger side mount was cracking. I'm lucky as shit my motor didn't fall outta my car like yours did.

Just posted pics, i know the engine bay is dirty as hell but as some of you may now albuquerque gets some really bad dust storms so i wasnt gona clean it untill i get back to florida.

a noise from the engine compartment while accelerating is an indication that you have a bad motor mount. check if you need replacement, flex it with pry bar to avoid damaging other engine components.

So the dealership fixed the bad motor mount and the cv joint. My problem now, when i drive in a straight line it is LOUD AS BALLS!!! not to mention when i turn to the right any faster than 20mph, it sound like metal is grinding(maybe its as simple as the shield plate attached to the caliper) but then i still get the same noise i was having befor the transmission mount gave out.... I wonder if these assholes even bothered to check the other mount while they were at it.... I mean seriously only comon sense would dictate that kind of nonsense. Im really starting to get fed up with these guys. My biggest probem is i keep telling them, very soon i need to drive back home(florida aka 1500 miles) and i cant afford to break down in the middle of my trip. Like they would give a flying rats ass. So much for certified mazda technicians that cant get the damn job straight the first time!

Take it back if you have time before your trip back. Next time take it out for a spin with the tech before you sign the papers and get your car back.

Wow! That tells you how bad the stock mounts are! I had all mine swapped this weekend for JBR 88dm. Got mine from @eric@edgeautosport with bunch of other stuff. PM him, he'll hock you up!

Anyway. My RMM and TMM were not bad at all, given I have 67k miles. BUT PMM was totally brocken. When we took the stock mount out the inner part almost fell out!!! I don't know how my engine held up...

Get the deal fix it up and change all the mounts. Installation is very simple, just get all the right tools.

Don't forget about the vibes and noises that new mounts will bring. But, people say after they break in, vibes dial down quite a bit.

yes the stock mounts suck, but they don't cause the engine to fall out. that is bad install or a bad bolt on the tmm.

gotta agree on the jbr mounts. i have the 80 rmm and tmm and they are beautiful. my tranny is loud as hell now, though. but that's ok..

not as impressive as you think. there is a thread on here titled 'how to stiffen your pmm' or something similar. basically, you just get a piece of angled aluminum and jb weld it into the gap on the stock mount, reducing its movement..

lemme see if i can find the thread..

edit: here it is.

Interesting. But my mount failed in its base (where the internal part connects to the outer part). So, this is a temporally fix, if the PMM fails. By the way, it myst be clunking against that new aluminum insert? Or not?

BTW here is also an option for you if you don't want stiff motor mounts.

Torque Damper

I spoke to a guy who first installed motor mounts, but didn't like the vibes (actually his wife and kids didn't like them). So, he installed Torque Damper and put ether all or PMM and TMM back and he is very happy with how things are.

It's your call. RACECAR or not

oh yes, this only reduces the front to back movement of the engine. definitely no fix for a broken mount, only a fix for a stock mount that moves too much. it doesn't clunk, but one gentleman in the thread i linked used a piece of rubber mat instead of Al for that very reason. truly though, it doesn't clunk.

either way, point is moot, your pmm broked.

this is funny, i got the jbr tmm finally because my oem tmm tore and was just plain worn out. my engine had so much movement, even with my jbr rmm, the car was handling very poorly and was getting a little unbalanced around hard corners. plus my shifting was getting more and more difficult. so, had i gone with a torque damper, i'd still have needed a new tmm. but i don't mind loudness and my kids love it. my wife has a prius, so if she wants to be in a quiet car, we drive hers.

guess whose car our 2 boys always want to drive in?

when i took the trz tmm off when i sold the car, it sheared off the top part of where the bolt screwed into. i think it's a bad design where there's too much weight loaded on the tmm and not enough on the pmm.

Already contacted eric at edge, will be getting mounts once i get back to florida. Got a call from the dealership saying my front left wheel bearing gave out. I guess when the engine fell and took out the cv joint, it also messed that up. Im hoping thats the end of the fall out for bad mounts.

That #4 mount probably would have failed regardless (unless you meant side mounts as well).

It seems to me that by tightening up even one motor mount, it would reduce the stress placed on the others as well simply because the engine is not moving as violently as before.

Just get the JBR 88 Trilogy. My Pu had a blown PMM when I bought it. I thought the RMM was Blown so I replaced with a TRZ RMM. Somehow my RMM Bolt stripped out and I swear my engine sounded like it was going to fall out since only the TMM was basically the only thing holding it in. I replaced all 3 mounts and now everything is RaceCar and I have no fear of the motor falling out.
