I think overall, the MS3, like you guys said, is the "classier" car and I'm sure more comforting and better build than the SRT4.

Should I be able to find a first gen MS3 in my price range of $15K and less without a buttload of miles on it?

Lastly, living in CA sucks, so we have certain smog laws. Are there any good performance upgrades that are still CARB legal? For example, I had my 2000 Audi S4 in which I swapped out my fueling, turbos and some other engine work. The smog techs were unable to tell the difference between stock turbos and the upgraded turbos and as long as it passed the sniffer, they had no idea anything was changed. I'm hoping this to be the same situations with the MS3?

ms3: better interior, better style, better rep, more rare, cops confuse it with family car, quiter, 6speed, hatch for trunk, control arms that don't go bad every 5k miles.

srt4: cheap, cheap to build, viper seats are decent

The highlighted bold is exactly what I want. With my RX8 and RX7s cops always associated it with racing even if I wasn't doing anything.

Once I got my GTOs, cops were giving my thumbs up as I ran open headers next to them. When I had my 380awhp+ Audi S4, cops didn't even know it was modded because they don't think luxury cars are "moddable"

One last thing that I just noticed doing some searches, it seems as though there are people using the same turbos I had on my Stage 3 S4 that they put on their MS3, the K04s.

Plain and simple, the SRT-4 no matter how fast or how much horsepower you add is still a Dodge. If you want a car built with a little more brain power that keeps advancing and has a much better build quality, go with the MS3.

You don't put a k04 on a ms3. It COMES with a k04 stock. Pretty good turbo IMO for a stock sports car.

It is bolded in the quote itself on the post but it's hard to see. I bolded the part where he said "cops confuse it with family car"

I didn't know it came with a K04 turbo. My Stage 3 S4 had two K04's and they were good for 370ish awhp and 400ish awtq to the wheels

Speeds are made in Japan, and they are pretty anal with their testing procedures, so if bought new you know you get quality. The Mazda 2.3DISI is a great engine. SRT4 is still a Neon pre-steroids.

exhaust wise, nothing you can do since no aftermarket cats are CARB legal. however, you can at least put a test pipe on and swap it out when you have to do emissions. that's a simple change to make. if you are experienced with a wrench, you can do the downpipe too. but that's much more of a bitch. you can read the threads on here about performance gains after replacing the upper downpipe and see if it is worth it.

there are options for intakes though. Cobb and Corksport make CARB certified intakes. and SURE is currently getting theirs certified (including all their 3"+ options). other than that, you'll still be able to do an e85 tune, internals, motor mounts, bigger turbo, etc.

Look at an aged srt-4 and an ms3. They both can be what you put into them but not only do you get versatility with an ms3 being a hatch but, you get this forum to boot. Easy choice.

It's funny to think that people actually "upgrade" those cars to a k04 when our cars come with it from the factory.

I've owned a neon, and driven an SRT-4... I've read this post and it's pretty great.

The SRT-4 can be crazy fast. I seen one the other day that I swear was a turbo diesel truck before I seen it was a neon. Thing was stupid fast. He made the mustang that attempted to race him look like he wasn't moving. However, it looked like crap. The neon is just not as good of build quality as the Mazda...

I now drive a MS3... I absolutely love it. With just simple mods you can be fooled into thinking you're driving a rocket. And if you want a daily driver with good MPG, you can push close to 30mpg if you stay out of boost... My favorite part about the MS3 is that most performance parts I add, I seem to get not only a faster rocket, but better MPG when I play nice.

But if you want to not spend the money for the Speed3, you can get a fully build stage 3 SRT-4 for about the same price as a lightly modded Speed.

SRT-4 is still a chick car that you cannot roll the rear windows down from the driver's seat.

And less and less are on the road, as they last as long s regular ones. Hopefully, we will be free of them in 2-4 years.

i considered one when i was looking for cars. gave up when i realized that all the srt4s around here were either beat to crap or way overpriced. was able to find several nicer used MS3s.

Found a 2007 MS3 at a dealership and was able to test drive it. First time I got on it the wheel jerked to the left and seemed to pull left and right. I'm assuming this is what everyone calls torque steer?

If the car is already like this at stock power, I'm wondering how it is when you start modding.

The MS3 is a nicer car by far. The dodge has a horrific interior. Still I pretty much like any turbo shitbox so I wouldn't be opposed to picking one up cheap and modding the piss out of it. The MS3 makes a much better daily driver but if I was looking for a car to just beat on at the track and not worry about breaking shit it would be the SRT.
