North alberta MS3 needs mod guidance Hey, im new here, I was just wondering what kind of mods i should be gunning for next. I have an AEM cold air intake installed, a front mounted intercooler sitting here waiting to be installed, as well as a cpe dashmount three gauge pod setup, a turbosmart Dual port sleeper BOV, Greddy turbo timer and corksport rear engine mount insert (which i have been told is all you need rather than a new motor mount, can anyone validate this claim?) and finally an HKS hi-power catback exhaust. Now my immediate dilemma is that i cant decide on purchasing the COBB accessport or the turbo xs downpipe/race-test pipe combo next? any suggestions as to which would benefit me more at this point? another question i have is about the AEM boost gauge / boost controller combo. is this thing a piece of junk, or a quality boost controller gauge combination? any help would be appreciated a ton. Thanks in advance, Johnny in Grande Prairie AB Canada |
Welcome! While I haven't replaced the rear motor mount, I do have the CS inserts and they were a noticeable improvement. I would think that the DP/RP combo would be the next best bet. Other than that, it seems like you are on track. I will most likely be getting the AP myself, but stage 2 plus seems where it is at! Good luck |
Thanks, Shenanigans. I appreciate the input. if anyone else can help me out with this and my other questions i would be grateful. |
I think the first thing you should get is the driver side motor mount |
Do you think that perhaps a better idea would be to tune the vehicle with the access port after completing a full turbo back exhaust system with the down pipe test pipe combo? which one would give me bigger gains out of the box? has anyone around here played with a cobb access port to see exactly what kind of power comes off a good tune? forgive my ignorance if i am not looking i the right spot, im new here. :) |
You should get the DP/RP (huge gains) and wait on the Cobb AP idea. See how the car runs with all the bolt ons for a while without turning the boost up. The DP/RP will give you boost spike to 18-19psi anyways. With the full TBE you do NOT need to tune right away. A great mod is one step colder spark plugs (Denso ITV22, at Streetunit.com $44) makes a big difference. Also if you can get some pg fuel pump internals and build your fuel pump this is another great mod. And if you really are serious you should look into a nice meth kit, then you will be ready to turn the boost up. As far as the boost guage/controller from AEM its not the best option, I would get the AEM wideband and just a prosport boost guage for now and do some research on the standback from cpe, I think it is a better option than the AP. |
What FMIC is it Get some shifter bushings too...great mod |
The intercooler is a custom piece made by a friend of a friend. i believe its something like 28"x2"x8" or 6.5" or something. what are shifter bushings and what are they helping out with? like i said im new to all this and i have been reading and talking with the only guy around this town i could find aftermarket parts through, but im still very inexperienced with modifying cars, and even basic car parts in general. also, what will the cooler spark plugs do? thanks josh |
Its too cold here in Alberta to mod :P |
this winter sucks balls, ill say that. are there any good spots to purchase aftermarket goodies / run dyno in edmonton? |
i have also read on the review forum here that the cobb DP is a pain in the ass... is there any way for a guy to eliminate the CEL issues? |
SHOUTBOX! FTW! downpipe and mounts. hahahaha |

thanks andrew. maybe one day we can rock a frozen tundra mazda meet lol |
With the DP/RP you are going to pick up some serious gains and you will notice some hesitation when getting on it the colder plugs will smooth it out and the car will run like stock again with the mods. (Streetunit.com) The shifter bushings replace the rubber ones that are terrible with solid ones that make the feel of shifting 10 times better. (TWM.com) |
thanks josh. sounds good. ill keep that stuff in mind in the near future. |
