Painting OEM Rims

I really would like to either powercoat my OEM gen 1 rims white, Or try painting them myself to see how it'll come out. But I've heard too much clear coat on white can turn it yellowish? Any advice on the best paint for rims or how much clear coats to apply and or paint coats?

Powdercoating them is going to be the best look. Plasti dip is cheap and will come off easy.

Just go with the dip, it's cheap, easy, looks good. And of course, if you don't like the look, peel it and everything is normal again.

Wouldn't dip peel after a good year or so? Heard and seen way too many bad dip jobs lol. I want to powercoat mainly. But dipping would be a good test look way?

Personally I love painting my own rims. I really like the satisfaction of doing all the work myself and having great results.

I have painted 3 sets of wheels and dipped my entire car. I have a hard time believing that white plastidip will not stain, especially on rims. A nice gloss white would be really easy to do with paint. I like Krylon paint for rims, affordable and very durable. Just use proper spraying technique and 2-3 base coats should be lots. You don't need to use tones of clear, 1-2 coats is most likely enough.

I also did a pair of summer rims in flat black

My entire car is dipped, I still miss my red ):

But it is holding up very well. Like I said before, I don't know how well white dip would hold up to dirt and dust. My advise is sand very well then paint, the satisfaction with a well done DIY job is unbeatable.

you can dip them white but just need to make sure you can let them sit for 3-4 days before driving on them so they dont get dirt in the paint. If you want gloss look, just add the glossifer... Dip is pretty solid and so what if you have to dip them once a year its cheap, protects your wheels, and you can always change them up. :)

Shit I even dipped my calipers orange just to see how the dip would do and held up great.. I was very suprised.

I'm gonna powder coat mine because it looks fucking sweet and lasts. Just don't fuck up and pick a colour you don't like because that shit gets expensive.

Mikey 03-11-2015 10:21 PM

That is why you dip them first to see if you like it. :) unless you no for sure why spend the money...

WHEELS, THEY'RE CALLED WHEELS!!!! :banghead::banghead::banghead::banghead:

Those dip jobs look great. I was looking at the black on red for the speed but I feel like so many people do that with their red cars? I Love the thought of white wheels for this year until I buy a good set soon. Because I have coilovers, plate relocation, nextmod lip and Sti lip planned for the end of April. And following is a anniversary with the lady so you all can expect where the rest of the monies have gone.

Means a lot you guys can put in input. I like the idea of trying the dip so I get a easy and cheap way of how it'll look. With no regret if I dont. Even though I'm positive I'll love it. I want a glossy white more then a flat though. So I guess glossifier? Or I may just paint them up. I feel like doing it with paint itself will bring out a more bold and defining white. Other then the constant brake dust it'll leave everywhere I go looool

Maybe they only want to paint the rim of the wheel???

Plasti dip is cheap and easy, and is surprisingly durable if you apply plenty of light coats. That being said, even though it did look good and completely change the look of my car, I'll never put white dip on rims again. I had to wash the wheels 2 or 3 times a week for them to stay clean.

Did you use the clear coat or whatever for the rims after? Or flat white? Cause I think because of how plastidip drys without a clear smooth finish as if it's painted with clear coat, brake dust packs on easier. But yes I do expect to wipe the rims down every few days. As annoying as it'll be

I think I may do that instead of paint. Just as a trial.

No, no clear after the white dip. That may have helped make the cleaning process easier.

One day I had had enough of fucking with them, so I soaked the rims in bug/tar remover (that shit demolishes plastidip) and pressure washed the dip off
