Serious intake dilemma. So, I've had the Cobb intake on my car for awhile now. Somebody recently pointed out to me that the filter isn't oiled. News to me, I thought it came oiled. there was residue on the bag, so I assumed it was oiled. It isn't. Here's the deal. I need a fix. I would like a dryflow filter (AEM or Amsoil), but no shops around here carry them. I could order one online, but still need a fix in the meantime. I've got some old K&N filter oil (the actual oil, not the spray can) that's been in my garage for years and i'm not sure about the quality of it. I could also spend $50 bucks at Autozone and get one of their oiled ones.(This I want to avoid) Quick fix option though. So, what do you think I should do?? Order one online and use the old K&N oil until it arrives (do you think the old oil is still useable??). Or go to the nearest Autozone and spend $50 bucks on a lame oiled filter. Any advice would be a great help in making my decision. |
Buy the oil from cobb tuning and oil it yourself, it's so easy a caveman can do it. Really, it is. Cost is about 12 bucks. Click link below for details. http://www.cobbtuning.com/cart/Default.asp |
Yes, I thought of that, but I still have to order it from online and wait for it to get here. So what do I do in the meantime?? And if i'm going to order something from online, it might as well be the dryflow filter which is what I really want. Hence my conflict. |
Most auto stores that sell K&Ns also sell the recharge kits for them as well. Comes with filter cleaner and oil in a spray can. Buy that and do it up. |

Depends on you. The worse you can do is put it on, it be too thick, and end up buying the recharge kit anyways. Or you could do it, get it right and your out nothing. Its up to you. I really don't beleive that the K&N oil can go old. |
The spray is for cleaning the filter before you dry and oil it. So if your filter is clean you don't need it. The steps are: 1) Spray cleaning agent (spray bottle) on filter. 2) Rinse with water. 3) Air dry completely. 4) Spray oil on filter, not too much though, just enough to cover the filter material. ^ all that is if you were re-charging the filter. |
Hold on. You bought this new and it wasn't oiled? Or you bought it used and the oil was used up? |
Nator recommends you get K&N recharge kit and read directions. It's all pretty much teh same shit. Lenny runs the K&N oil. The only word of advice is dont over oil it. |
ive got the cobb recharge kit if you need to borrow it tony. |
I've got to say if it wasn't oiled and it was supposed to be and you have been driving around with it for awhile what is the harm in driving it a few more days until you get the oil/filter? |
run filterless. safest bet |

I don't think some of you read the original post. I have the K&N oil already. I've decided to use the oil I already have on the cobb filter (just a light coat). Then I'll wait for the Amsoil to show up. I'm sure that oil doesn't go bad. It'll be fine. Hey Bab, You run filterless first and let me know how it pans out. |
::10 years later:: Also buy some CRC MAF sensor cleaner for 5$ at any auto store. Clean that bitch off if you've been ridin with no/little oil for a while since its bound to have a nice coating of dust. |
