Shifting points?

Hey gents, pretty new to this forum and my ms3,

just wanted to get some information about shifting points.

I use my car as a daily driver, and when Im getting to and from work, I dont like to push it hard, and Id like to be as careful with fuel as possible.

Ive read briefly about not running in low rpm's especialy up in 6th.

Im wondering if you can enlighten me a bit,

where do you like to shift when your taking it easy, and what is a good medium for each gear?

thanks!

AZSPEED3 07-27-2011 06:51 PM

Don't go WOT below 3k rpm in 5 and 6 gear. If stock tune shift around 5500rpm when WOT.
Normal driving all depends on you, but I would say 3k rpm is good.

blue_train 07-27-2011 08:30 PM

^ thanks man,

so am I good to cruise in lets say 5th around 2500-3000 rpm, just barley on the peddle?

cheers

Daily driving shift at 8k

why?

Because race car

Bucker 07-27-2011 08:49 PM

Yep, just dont floor it. It isnt really worth it anyway, downshift if you need power.

Shit, but you don't hit your 3rd stage of VTAK until 13000? Why so low?

I'm going to try around 5800 next time out.

3K is good for just casually driving around the streets. gotta save the gas money

When driving relaxed make 3k your rev limit. The car has enough torque to pull you around town and mild acceleration on the highway in this range. I never let my rpms go lower than 2k when cruising. Trying to accelerate in that low range actually increases load on the engine, reducing its efficiency.

When driving hard if your stock, as stated, 5.5k is about as far as you can take it. The car really falls on its face past this point. Once you get an intake and a tune the engine really opens up and makes decent power up to about 5.8k-6.2k before it starts to feel like its gasping.

If I'm going to try and save on gas, I usually shift below 3k, right around 2.5k. I don't get into boost at all. Plus in my town, all the speed limits are 30-35mph. Yes, my town is gay!

Postulio4joo 07-28-2011 01:06 AM

Isn't 3k a bit high for grandma driving? or am i doing shifting way too early at 2.25-2.75? My science is that i i drive like a grandma for 5 miles i can have 1 mile of ear to ear grinning speed.

SWAY 07-28-2011 01:17 AM

Fuck!!! We're suppose to shift

The driving style i found to get the best gas mileage is pretty much just stay out of boost. Partial throttle and shifting before 3k pretty much does the trick.

this is what I do, I like to shift at about 2750 which keeps me just above 2k to slowly move up the next gear, I average between 24-26 everyday driving, and 28-33 on highway driving (depending on hills, average speed and my right foot). Also you can slowly pic up speed to pass someone in 6th gear at highway speeds but have to emphasize on the SLOWLY, I did it once where I pushed hard in 6th (didn't go wot) and could tell the car did not like that, then read up on going wot at low rpm on here and found out why.

Mistersix 07-28-2011 04:14 PM

ya, WOT at low rpms is baaaaad. I never go WOT till at least 4k when i'm getting on it.

Domino81 07-28-2011 04:42 PM

Pff, pussies. I go WOT in 6th at 1250. I'm sure nothing will happen.

silvapain 07-28-2011 04:50 PM

I have no problems going WOT at 2K RPMs. I hit full boost around 3K this way. I'm nit running a stock tune though; It's all in having a good tune.

Around town I usually shift around 3K-4K, depending on gear and traffic around and up ahead of me. I care less about fuel economy than I did about Amy Winehouse dying, and that wasn't a whole Hell of a lot.

Tapadatass

boosted_out 07-28-2011 04:57 PM

I usually wait till needles bounces once or twice off rev limiter...

h4bs 07-31-2011 07:34 PM

Manual shifting is for non luxury cars.

hMg_Ms3 08-03-2011 03:27 PM

so umm.. the speed 3 turbo usually spool at about 35oo around there right? and also what the hell is WOT???hjaha

wolly6973 08-03-2011 05:03 PM

WOT = Wide Open Throttle = gas pedal to the floor

ScarMS3 08-03-2011 05:15 PM

Turbo spools much sooner than 3.5 k

HateMachine 08-03-2011 05:21 PM

i had thought it was around 3k

Mistersix 08-03-2011 08:40 PM

It all depends really. Temp, gear, revs, tune. There's no hard number. Yes, it does spool pretty quick though. The stock turbo is just a little guy.

AtTheDriveIn 08-03-2011 08:47 PM

Fuck shifting. I stay in first and redline down the highway just to let the bitch know who's boss...

BUT when I shift, 3K is good for me fuelwise.

LatinKraze 08-03-2011 08:52 PM

When I first bought the MS3 I used to shift at 3k but it wasnt suitable for my driving. I prefer shifting around 3750 or higher to accomodate my heavy right foot. I'm spoolin before every shift and still manage 23mpg. Keep driving and you'll soon find out what RPM is best for your driving style.

Anyone have an actual number for when it spools?

and

I'm strictly highway to and from work everyday and like to shift around 3k for fuel economy, if driving fast around 5-5.5k. I don't feel comfortable flooring it below about 3.5k, I see some people here have no issue with it though.

Domino81 08-03-2011 09:18 PM

2 lbs @ 2200 rpm?

jack_hammer 08-03-2011 09:36 PM

i don't always shift, but when i do, i prefer 5.5k

Around 2800. When you start getting shoved into your seat....it's spooling.

Mistersix 08-04-2011 06:38 AM

Looking at my last log. Throttle tip in to WOT at 3.3k and full boost at this same point.
