Default Tuning thread, what to do first.

Things to look for:

Boost leaks (yes these cars have boost leaks)
Spark plug gap (.030) and extend the plug spings to keep blow out away
Good quality oil (Mobil 1 is my choice)
Coolant is topped off and in good shape

Now these are just your basic things but "lots" of people miss them when they start there modding.

Mod list:

Good quality exhaust system from the turbo back (make sure its a 3" system not 2.75 or smaller system like some others have been selling)

10 to 25 + WHP

Now there has been some speculation about the back pressure on the turbo seal and high flow exhaust systems, this is utter nonsence. They are bad turbos seals going out not the lack of back pressure.

Good FMIC or TMIC

20 to 30 WHP (more WTQ then WHP on most occations)

Both of these have considerable gains and will be needed when the time comes for more boost pressure.

CAI or bigger MAF housing

10 to 33 + WHP

Some are making claims of more HP then others, keep in mind that "if its to good to be true, get dyno proof". Now there are several MAF housings on the market that set codes for to lean, keep this in mind and "search" before you buy one. The only way to keep the codes from showing up will be with some sort of tuning solution, so keep that in mind.

We need to address the Balance Shafts and oil pan Windage.

You need to get rid of the BS assembly if you plan on turning up the boost, if not you could risk your motor going boom. The windage tray is just a smart thing to add to your motor since your in there, it will keep the oil out of the intake manifold and keep the potential dangers of the vaporized oil making its way into your runners under boost. The vaporized oil will cause knock, so address this while your working on the car.

Now that we have covered the basic mods its time to move on to more boost and fuel.

Fuel:

DI pump upgrade

0 to 100 + HP gains

If your going to run more boost (much over 18 psi) your going to need this. When you really start to add boost, it's going to be a must have! There is a limited resource of this upgrade but its going to grow for sure in the future.

MBC or EBC or WGA (TBA but soon for the MS4 and 6)

0 to 30 + HP gains (deppends on where you set your boost level)

There is everthing from the $5 Ebay part to $600 electronic units. Until someone comes out with a WGA for our car this is going to be about the only way you can up the boost for now. Either that or go external gate, and that would be very expensive but the cool factor would be 10 fold .

So these are the basic things you should be looking at first and pretty much in this order. There are other things like flow mods and mounts to keep wheel hop away. They you have clutches and STS for your shifting. The list can go on and on but for right now I am going to stick to basic mods that anyone can bolt on and now, more complex mods.

Bigger turbo/upgraded turbos:

You can bolt on just about any turbo now because the manifolds are out there to do this with.

Or you can do a big wheel upgrade for the stocker.

Niether of these have posted any great numbers yet but some are getting to OK numbers with the bigger turbo kits.

Tuning solutions:

Cobb seems to have something
Additional injector drivers (more fuel done easy)
WI/METH, keeps knock away and cools some
EMS and stand alone systems, the Audi guys seem to have a grip on this just now and it seems that the DI could be controlled with the TEC3R system.
Then you have "the next guy" with his ideas. There is still nothing really on the market that will give you full control of the car unless you go full EMS.

Flow flow flow flow, you want your car to flow:

Port work and more port work to keep the system flowing and moving air with out the motor having to over work to get the pressure out of the motor and into the exhaust, then you don't want the motor to work to hard at getting the air sucked into the motor that will put even a great strain on the motor then having to push the exhaust out. Get every part you can ported on the car. Not very many have done the head or done very much to the intake manifold (when it could use a good port job).

The stock turbine housing is so restrictive that taking 2lbs out of it during a good port job is easy. Turbo inlet porting wouldn't hurt much either.

Sooooo, now what? At this point you will be looking at built motors, spray, additional injector controllers, ect ect. If you have all the above done then you will be sporting a full tubular exhaust manifold, intake manifold and many other "one off" parts. This is the point in which you have now got more into the car then your first house or your college edjucation. You have a race car or damn near if you have to go beyond this point. Feel free to contact us or comment in here if you feel that I have missed anything, thanks.

Any particular reason you think an intake/MAF housing should be done after exhaust and intercooler upgrades instead of before?

Stocker is really good to begin with. It will flow what the exhaust will push out of it. Exhaust should always be the first thing. You want to get rid of the heat and then add more cool air. Adding more cool air to the intake will only make the exhaust have to move more hot air.

You could really go either way but I am always looking for the smarter way to go, not just power per dollar spent. Either one would work as an OK mod for the first one. Just don't skip out on the exhaust because it't to much money.

Odd that you would ask about the FMIC, we are going to realease them here very soon and for a GB deal as well.

We use the magna flow 3" in out muffler, they sound great and I have one on my car.

Its only one muffler and its a little loud but thats what its all about. With the DP in place it might border on to loud so for that we will have to come up with something to quiet it down a bit (resonator in the rear).

I will see what I can get for a sound clip over the weekend.

Which maggy is it? They built custom stuff using my truck. Is it the non chambered, magnapack or the oval? I know they have a different setup for imports. They were building a custom exhaust for a STi used for a race team. Had lean proof high flow cats on it too.

Its and old one, its and ultra flow muffler. They still build them but they are not listed on the site or product listing. You have to have the part number to order them and they are mostly back order items that no one carries.

I have been using this for few years now for odd bore stroke motors and they work very well. If you use one on a Honda they sound like shit.

If you do the cat back only from us it will be drone free for sure. Its not that loud under cruise and idle only WOT does it get good and loud.

If you want the turbo back, no idea at this time. We have not ran this muffler on a turbo back yet so I will have more info soon. The turbo back is going to be loud under boost and more so then the stock system under cruise and idle. I hope to have more info over the next week.

If you want the turbo back, no idea at this time. We have not ran this muffler on a turbo back yet so I will have more info soon. The turbo back is going to be loud under boost and more so then the stock system under cruise and idle. I hope to have more info over the next week.
OK, I'm waiting cause I want 300 hp fr my wife but I have to be real careful with my mods.

Hey John , on the exhaust is there a way to order it muffler\resonator free. I don't really care about how loud it is (I'm a asshole) . Would this cause any problems not having any backpressure ? Also thanks again for the Turbosmart bov- love it

Yes we can do this and yes you will be the neighborhood asshole with an exhaust set up like this. They are crazy loud so let this be your warning. No issues with back pressure when it comes to the turbo and exhaust.

So what would be the cost either way- muffler - no muffler.? I'm only running the 1st resonator now in my stock exhaust .I also don't have the CS test pipe in yet so if I do do this it might be a tad loud .Thanks again for the quick reply

Add $89 for the muffler option and most of the pipe has shown up .

Sorry to bug you again but add 89 to what. I couldn't find on your site under the Speed 3 what the exhaust would cost.

on the turbo front, if you get a smoker rebuilt, does that include seals or do you think it would be pointless to excersize that option?

Every turbo rebuild will get seals but will we need upgraded ones? That is the big question.

is getting the upgraded seals cost prohibitive? I'm really nervous about putting the downpipe on until I know more about this. and I'm buying a downpipe pretty soon.

Not at all but please give me a week to figure out if the seals are the reason for the burning oil. I have something I want to try out first to see if it fixes the leaking seals. 2 weeks max to figure this out, thanks.

oh, no rush from me, as I won't be in the position to do this any time soon. I just assume we are all anxious to hear your findings! knowing for certain why these turbos are blowing seals and how to fix the problem will be a pretty cool thing.
