Default what is it and what's it's function?

noticed this piece underneath the oem intercooler intake, on the driver's side...
three things:
1. what is it?
2. what's it's function?
3. does anyone know if taking it off would be detrimental to an oem air intake setup?

how does that apply to the MS3's? would it change the rate of airflow to the oem intake if removed? or is it's function supposed to regulate cooler air to the oem intake?
thanks for the reply, by the way...

does nothing when your little plastic air diverter things to the tmic (that is the technical term, srsly) are still there. if you go fmic, and remove the little plastic things, removing that cover/plug will send a little cool air to the intake. doesnt affect much either way.

so, as i understand it, the only time that removing it would prove useful is if i were to go fmic and remove the plastic air diverters that usually channel cool air to the tmic, thus letting cool air through the unblocked whatever it's called to the oem air intake...
i was just curious, that's all...
thanks!!!
