Default Best Miata Ever Made

If you care to explain your reasoning please do so.

... please be original with your distaste for the car should you be compelled to share it with us. Technical justification would be acceptable.

The NA Miata when it was first released by Top Gear

Here is the MSM w/ the NB, NB coupe and a Spec Miata.

Here is a review of the NC against the NB when it first came out done by the prestigious group @ Best Motoring International.

The '98 was delayed in production for the US. They decided to call it a '99 model even though it was released in early '99

I choose 98 then since there was none, that should be an option in the poll.

No Finkle. I searched their site however and found nothing of recent covering the subject or the cars in question.

They did a < $40,000 car shootout on the best handling cars available.

I think the miata came in 2nd only to the evo.

Lemme see what I can dig up and I'll post it here.

My apologies. It was in car and driver:

I have actually met a few of these magazine reviewers and had lengthy discussions with them about their views on the cars they test. Simply put, they don't know what fun is.

I updated the first post with reviews from trusted sources.

having spent a fair amount of time in both NC (father-in-laws) and my recently acquired NA (both 100% stock) i can fairly that the NC is the better performer, but the NA is a better experience. what i find amusing is the lack of improvement over the more than 20 year run - the NC isn't a far cry from the NA - slightly more powerful and refined, but still raucous, jittery and fun. i imagine the NB falls somewhere, naturally, in between.

This.

I owned a 1.6L NA and test drove an NC once. In an attempt to be as unbiased as possible, I preferred the feel of the NA. The NC was pretty fast and fun,but felt bigger, heavier, and less go-karty than the NA. Can't comment on what the best one is because I haven't driven them all. I'd love to sample an MSM or even the 1.8L NA or NB just to compare.

Best as far as aesthetics? Most will probably disagree, but I prefer the NA, no question. And my personal favorite is the '93 LE. Would love to get my hands on one of those, unmolested. But I'd have to have another NA at the same time to feed the mod addiction.

The NA and the NB share a ton of mechanicals. Engine, transmission, suspension, control arms, subframes etc can pretty much be easily swapped between the two chassis. The BP had many of its quirks fixed over the years (coolant reroute is actually detrimental for the later BPs since mazda corrected that issue), the NB top hats gave more shock travel. In essense, the NB is a result of an NA that's had about 15 years to be perfected. In that time, the aftermarket had alot of time to research and perfect as well.

The NC was all new, nothing is shared with the older models. Yes this brings some improvements (stiffer chassis in particular). But it also brings a number of new quirks that haven't been addressed yet. The stiffness improvement isn't a big deal since there are already a ton of affordable aftermarket options to stiffen the older gens. The NC also has a very limited aftermarket. Maybe it will eventually be the better option. But not until it's been scrutinized and figured out the way NA/NB are.

NA/NB alignment setups have been figured out down to a T. Proper rake, sway bar tuning, wheel tire offset fitment, brake bias. These things have all been figured out completely depending on application.

The NC does bring an arguably better engine, its more modern and responds better to boost. But it's limits haven't been figured out to the same extent. Parts to push it past the basic low boost setup just don't exist in quantity yet.

IMO, for the NC to have a chance to compete it has to have a much better supported aftermarket, and more top tuner attention. But with the ND so close, and no one has any idea how much it'll share with the NC. There's no guarantee the NC's aftermarket will ever develop to the extent the NA/NB has.

The NA was styled to be a replica of the original lotus elan. So it's easy to prefer to looks if you were alive during the time when the lotus elan was one of the best cars you could buy.

The first engine series I worked on was the Mazda B series. Seriously awesome motors. Loved boost, good torque, simple as shit to fix and tons of fun.

I have 2 faves.

1. 1995 NA. Better all around with the 1.8 and slightly stiffer, bigger brakes while also still OBDI. I can put a standalone and turbo in one with my eyes closed yet never owned one because I was stupid to buy a 951.

2. The 04-05 NB MSM. Exclusive and Mazda caught on that the car needed a turbo. LSD, stronger box - good package. Runs out of breath a little too soon, small intercooler and tiny turbo but the basics are there. With a tune, a nice exhaust, IC, better brakes, and stiffer suspension it's the one I'd have if I had 10k more to spend and all '95s were beat up.

With the right pads and tires none of the NA/NB Miatas need anything bigger then sport brakes. True about the MSM... bolted stock turbo with a tune can get you 220-230. That is plenty for just about anyone. Best Miata ever!

The MSM was my favorite. A VRM MSM is pure sex.

If you're in the market for a new car and looking for something fun to drive the 11' MX-5 Miata is awesome. It's far more fun to drive than the 370z and just about any other car around 40k and under IMO.

Apparently Car and Driver also agree placing it a very close 2nd behind ONLY the EVO X MR (87 > 86). It's constantly placing above cars costing 2X it's price in the most important best drivers car / fun to drive categories.

You just have to go test drive and see for yourself. Personally I was very impressed with the 11' MX-5 hard top 6MT upgraded suspension. It's definitely amongst the most fun new cars to drive period and certainly one of the best under 40K.

I'm not talking about "numbers" but actual "driving". I'm currently torn between the EVO X and MX-5. Two totally different types of cars but both a lot of fun. I just got to decided if the EVO is worth the extra money.
