Default Engine Noises and wouldn't start on 1st try

Hey Guys,

after reading a ton of problems people have with their mazda cx-7s in terms of timing chains and VVTs I thought I would post two videos in hopes my car is not having the problem I think it is.

Background:
2007 Mazda CX7 milage 95300
I recently graduated with my Masters and so the whole time I have had this car I have not had the money to address these issues. Now I have a job the engine noises started at least 3 years ago. (was not notified of the extended 70k warranty) check engine light never comes on. It just sounds like a diesel engine and I want to get it fixed. I also recently (today) changed the spark plugs, and I use seafoam every now and again and did the brake line seafoam intake in hopes that might solve the problem.

Any ideas on the problems?

First video:
This happens about once a month where when I turn the key it fails to start, second turn always starts with no troubles any ideas?

Second Video:
This is the dreaded sound I hate!

My guess is the worst case scenario and I need to drop ~$1500 for the timing chain and parts. Will that fix the problem in the long term? I am hoping that reading all of the other posts has just made me over think the problem.

Thanks

I've never heard a timing chain slap a timing cover before but I imagine it would sound like that. I can't believe the mechanics you took it to couldn't figure this out.

Dang
Did you take it to the dealer? Any idea how the cost was broken down? Has everything been fine since, how many miles ago did you get it done?

I see full kits OEM labeled Mazda for like $425 online, and then take it to the dealership if they're going to try and charge more. It really sucks I just spent $80 on an oil change last weekend, I believe it has to be drained for this procedure.

My god, that poor engine. Its been out of time for so long. You need to do some serious reading and buy a lot of tools and start doing your own work. It'll save you money.

Yeah, like I said I was broke in college so I didnt want to fix anything that wasnt causing a check engine light to come on.

Do you think the timing is also what is causing the occasional starting problems?

Mazda dealership wants about $1700......

Yeah I would say so. If it skips a tooth you'll have bigger problems than a CEL.

It must run rough, no?

Engine shaking and poor acceleration. If the timing chain is that loose I would think it wouldn't run well

The CEL won't pop on for a VVT unless its more than 14 deg off timing. P0340 sets.

Buy your parts online, and get a labor quote for a VVT job. Should not be any more than 5.5 hours. Which equates @ 95/hr depending on the labor rate of the shop.

I've heard worse.

I'd say the engine shakes a little, acceleration seems normal. I was test driving some 4 cylinder Jeeps this weekend and found my CX-7 has much better acceleration. I just dont know if its worth spending $1.7k on this fix, $200 for a transmission flush, probably 700-800 on new tires for a car thats probably worth 5k? The jeep dealership was going to offer me 3k for it as a trade in.

A NAPA mechanic quoted me $700 for labor if I brought in the parts, but I have read on here that its not a good idea to do it with someone who hasnt done it before.

The dealership I called was quoting me for 7.8-8 hours

Does anyone have a recommendation for a place to buy the whole kit of parts? If so how much and where?

I'm just going to get the car fixed and hope nothing else major fails.

Anyone used the VVT from DCR? I would hate to put a new faulty Mazda part in.

VVT kit is the same for a c-x7.

If the NAPA guy is a ford tech, then more than likely he's done a keyless L3,LF,L5, ect.

As for it being worth it... Some people love the car, some don't. If you're thinking of getting a new car then I'd make that decision before even repairing anything.

If memory serves, Mazda revised the design later in the MZR DISI production run.

By far the cheapest, I tried to get my local Mazda dealership to price match and they said these parts were less than whole sale so they could not match them.

It seems like there are so many lists and kits with different parts

My list right now based on kits from eBay and people posting here is:

Variable Valve Timing Actuator
Timing Chain
Valve cover gasket
Serpentine belt??
The cam sprocket bolts x2
The cam friction washers: x2
Timing chain tensioner
bolt lock-c shaft
washer lock x3
chain guide
lever
RR Gasket
rtv silico
FRONT CRANK SEAL
Plug Blind
WASHER SEALING-HEAD COVER x 14
RING O

total 480 from Taska

Any thoughts?
