I'll do some online research tomorrow, but didn't know if you had any recommendations.
CK, if you pm speed6killah, that cat can fix a transmission and has solved a lot of axle issues for msf guys.

His name is Pablo, you may have seen his insane build thread, and has given me a hand on more than one occasion.

Happy New Year!

Cool, I'll give him a shout... I'm hoping we were just tired, cuz it was the last thing we did. It shouldn't be that hard, I think Matt Daniel and I were able to get it out pretty quickly, but I'll pm him for advise.

Happy new year

Keith, you have to jerk on it and not just pull. There is some end play in the CV's, so hold on the axle between the CV's, push in, then pull back hard and fast. It should take a couple pulls.

Cool, so just to be clear, it is more about the jerking between the cvs than using the pry bar? As in, I could do it alone by just jerking?

You should be able to do it alone by jerking it. A second person using a pry bar certainly doesn't hurt though.

Be careful pulling on the axle though, because the joint can come separated in the boot and then that's more work. If you can get a good swing, use the pry bar like a chisel and hit the pry bar with a hammer on the inner part of the cv shaft.

Amazing how the right axle came out on the dyno yet the left is stuck. Fuckin cars. Lol

The passenger side is held in place by the jackshaft bearing mount. The driver's side is held in by a retaining clip on the halfshaft spline. That's why it's such a pain to remove and install.

Yes, we put it back in...sideways because we discovered we couldn't fit it between the cars with ease.
Someone removed the dipstick, so when we set it down we had an oil spill on par with BP.

Keith, glad to hear you got the axle out, that thing was pissing me off. Let me know if you need more help.

Yeah, so at this point the engine is out. Joel and I started to take it apart last night, but he had to go get the sex (apparently I wasn't enough), so I called it a night.

K1 rods are ordered (confirmed tomorrow morning), Dustin sent a package of goodies and now I'm deciding if I should get a atp gtx3071 internal wastegate and have it ported, or if I should go t3 vband??? decisions, decisions.

Here is a picture of one of the pistons. I might send Dustin's pistons back because with this sealant here, I think that this may be reusable. Thoughts?

We pulled this out of the holes by cranking the engine... I can't tell what happened to cylinder 1 yet, but this is from two... and the rod is bent about 90 degrees.

Funny thing is, we have only had 2 hang ups... The first was the windshield wipers which are hammered on by the arm of god (I know right... Hey dude, I'm pulling my motor and reinstalling it myself, but can you help me with these wipers?) and pulling the second one (thanks @TRex) resulted in a broken windshield. The other hang up was the axle.

So far the process has been an awesome and fucking messy (thanks for the dipstick Kyle!!!) process and I can't wait to get the block apart.

oh and @djuosnteisn , if you read this, the stock pistons use 22.5mm wrist pins, so that is what I ordered, correcto???

Yup... correctamundo.

I included the wrist pins and c-clips all with the pistons. Hopefully the bores on the new bottom end look good and only need a fresh hone. If they're bad and need to be bored over, the oem pistons won't work. Time will tell on that one. Don't taper the new rods til you know though... cause if you wind up having to buy new over-sized pistons, you don't need to taper the rods. I also left the oem rings on the pistons, but you'll want to put on fresh rings (and gap em). My machine shop gapped my rings for me, but i still had to put them on the pistons. You can practice with the old rings though. And lastly, the pistons are kinda dirty, so you'll wanna clean em up some.

If you get stuck on anything, or have any questions, just gimmie a call man.

Oh, and on that piston.... Crazy how it fell into the crank area. You said it was cylinder 2? I bet the balance shaft gear tore it to shreds. Do you have any pics of the #2 rod?

I know that some people wanted a better look at my pistons, so I cleaned them all up and here they are. Also, I had an extra set of gendone pistons thanks to DJ, so I compared them and there are different indentations in the genpu and the genpu weigh 10 grams more than the gen 1. I weighed all four gendone and they were all between 378-380, while the two genpu that I measured were 388-390. I made sure that they all had there rings so that it would be accurate. Anyway, pics for those who want to see them.

@Lex , pm me your address and I'll send you the one that I still have connected to a rod... do you need the rings?

and the gendone

@Dano I think that you were the one who wanted me to clean these off, so here you go. If you want me to take any other photos, let me know.

Yeah, looks like the piston was simply bludgeoned by a broken rod. And i'm still of the impression that our stock pistons are pretty damn tough. At least tougher than the rods.

nothing much to add here. From the initial pic it looked like there might have been more carbon buildup which would have indicated some on-going issue prior to ZZB but these pics discount that theory.

Is the rod in too many pieces to identify? If there is still large chunks, could you grab some pics?

I agree completly. When I build my engine I will be using a carillo rod with tapered ends and oem pistons. They are pretty stout.

Here are a few pics of the rod... the torx was too chewed up to get off tonight, but maybe another day.

I tried to line them up as best I could.

The string is measured to the tip of the broken rod along the side.

I don't know what this show other than the rod either broke some place higher than this, or it was the piston. I mean, I'm sure that the rod is exactly the length from the crank to the holes it punched in the block... I'll measure that tomorrow.

that is probably the weakest point of the rod...damn that thing was trying extremely hard to exit the block....some tremendous pressure exerted for multiple cycles to weaken it.

what do your valves and head look like for that cylinder??? got to be fubared.

I think there are shots in the e85 thread (lol, I have half of my shit posted there and half here) of the head. The head was beat up a bit but it was usable.

got cha...hard to tell but there is some shadow around both intake valves..either they are starting to open or are closing or they both could be bent and are def messed up.

look at them compared to the valves in both adjacent cylinders. They are both about the same so they are both prab just open.

I think you'll def need a new plug in that cylinder

mazda did some major reworking of the piston face for gen2.....looks like they were working on flame front travel/atomization of fuel.

if I decide to do a budget build I may try to get some gen2 pistons fo sho if they can be had for much cheaper than aftermarket. Believe it or not I would think Mazda would know more about flame travel than any aftermarket company on their platform. DI is still relatively new but I haven't looked around at aftermarket pistons.

Ok gearheads and car geaks, I have decided that I am going t3 gtx371 ewg. Joel is hooking me up with a GREAT deal on all parts except the turbo of course and the ewg.

So the turbo comes in 3 turbine A/R sizes: .63, .82, 1.06. Which size would you guys recommend for a DD with a 400whp goal? Most of the hard driving will be pulls on the highway. I love to tear up a twisty road but doubt I will ever get much autoX action sadly.

Now, these numbers are just numbers to me. And although I'm guessing I could hit 400 on any of these, having a slightly slower spool and more power in the higher rpms doesn't sound that bad with the limited traction I'll have available with summer tires. What do you guys think and what would you go with if these were your goals?

I am sure you can get to 400whp with the .63 no problem.
