2013 CWP Speed3 or 2008 Evo X?

2013 Mazda Mazda3 Touring Countryside, Illinois | CJ Wilson Mazda

2008 Used Mitsubishi Lancer 4dr Sdn Man Evolution GSR at Exotic Motors Serving Rolling Meadows, IL, IID 10363272

As the title says, which one would you pick? Me and my brother are having a dilemma which one to choose. This is going to be his first car, in his price range. We're going to both dealership tomorrow to check them out. I'm more on the speed3 side, simply because I drive a speed3 and I ate an Evo once. And he's leaning towards Evo. Any inputs (negative or positive) are welcome! Thanks!

Evo.

usgiorgi 08-02-2013 08:50 AM

Depends what he's looking for in a car.. At a glance, some may think they're similar because they're racer boy type of cars, but they're very different. Is he going to mod the crap out of it? If so, the warranty of the new car is not much good. I'd personally go for the speed just because its newer and you know most evos out there were beat on more than Rihanna by Chris Brown.

JP_Playboy 08-02-2013 08:51 AM

Wow, I never have seen a newer EVO's interior. Looks terrible. I would still take it though because fun.

Yeah, he'll definitely mod the shit out of it. He likes both cars. The reason why he's leaning towards evo coz of AWD. We're in midwest, so that's reasonable. But yeah, we're going to check the evo out tomorrow, we'll see.

Speed3in215 08-02-2013 08:55 AM

Speed3 brand new car same range. Even though I always wanted an Evo. But then again if I was your bro I wouldn't want to drive the same car as you lol

adlpb 08-02-2013 08:59 AM

Looks to me like the evo's been modded and taken back to stock. Judging from the AMS sticker, shift knob, wheels and hastily placed UICP clamps. I'd be weary of buying a used evo, specially from a dealer which you will never know who the driver was. People who buy these cars usually have one thing in mind, and it's not getting groceries. I would check if the clutch is still stock.

Also, check your brother's insurance rates on both cars before you buy. The evo is one of the most expensive cars to insure in the country when you're under 25.

LOL it's funny coz he said the exact same thing! He wants a different and faster car than mine. But like you said, first speed3 is new and it's CWP!! I'll trade my car for CWP anyday.

Definitely go online and do research on what to look for in used EVOs. I know when I was looking for my previous car, I stumbled upon a 2009 EVO 20k miles. Looked very shiny and taken care of. But then I did the clutch test (e-brake engaged release clutch). It slipped like a MOFO and I knew the car was obviously driven very hard or by someone inexperienced. I passed because who knows what else was wrong.

Coming from an Evo guy! Thanks for the input! We'll check those and test drive it tomorrow.

I edited my post, check insurance rates as well

El_Diablo 08-02-2013 09:03 AM

I would go for an Evo but not that one... I would stick to an 8 or 9.

Trey-Z 08-02-2013 09:06 AM

It depends on what he wants out of it, will it be a DD? If so the MS3, hands down, it's more comfortable, better mileage, etc etc

If he wants to get REALLY serious about racing/modding and doesn't care about mileage the Evo is the way to go.

It's going to be his first car. Yeah, it's for DD. I made him a deal, I can guide him through the process of modding the MS3, if he'll get it, but if he chose to Evo, all I know is AWD Turbo sedan..just like MS6. But definitely a beast car on track.

Also, FWD vs. AWD maintenance costs are like night and day.

I tried convincing him for a speed6 but he's mesmerize in an Evo..lol I can't blame him cause I once wanted an Evo before I got speed3. But when I test drove a speed3, I instantly fell inlove with it.

manila 08-02-2013 10:45 AM

@Trey-Z; Hoy, pare' tell him to get a speed!

Darksun280 08-02-2013 10:47 AM

I wouldn't pick up a used 08 unless you got money to fix it. take the new car with a warranty.

True that! New one is always better for the same price. IMO

usgiorgi 08-02-2013 10:57 AM

Another idea :P Why not go for a 04-07 Volvo S60R? 300hp 300ft lbs of torque. Adjustable suspension etc... I just came to mazda from an R. Can't beat the performance for the value haha. You can pick one up for around 10k

If you got 5K liquid cash to fix anything that may be wrong then sure. Other wise Evo's arent the best choice since 90% of the population like to mod them and they are on their 2nd-6th owners at this point. .

JgamB 08-02-2013 11:17 AM

That car is averaging 1 owner per 2 oil changes, and having been to auction twice it tells me it was probably younger buyers that couldn't afford to fix it when they broke it.

My AWD DSM was an absolute money pit - but the warranty saved my bacon over and over. I wouldn't do it again.

But.. telling a younger enthusiastic buyer about these kinds of problems is usually as productive as talking to a wall. Once the infatuation sets in, it's over.

I have a buddy who has a 2010 Evo X. I asked him for his input and he said get an Evo new or don't get it at all. He said he learned from it in a hard way. People are trading in Evos because they broke it or it has problems with it, if they don't have any problems with it, why trade/sell?

You just made me save up in future for a new Evo! lol $35k for 2014 is not bad.

It's still expensive though.

Damn you all Sexy Wicked White Evos!! Now I'm really jelly. A lot of former MS3 owners became Evo owners and still be in this forum. I think I read a thread about Evos being the traditional upgrade for MS3. This forum should be revised to mazdaspeedforumstoevoforums.org lol
