2013 Mazdaspeed 3 de-catting stock exhuast

Hello everyone, sorry if there is a thread about this already but i cant find it. I have a 2013 mazdaspeed 3 and i want to take the cat off the midpipe. down sides? power gains? sound?

damimgoood 03-18-2014 10:33 PM

why dont you just get a whole downpipe not catted with some nice gains

Of course thats the goal in the future but I don't have the money for that at this moment. Im not touching the cat on the downpipe, just the second one, since i will be getting an uncatted downpipe sooner or later.

1.Save money use the SEARCH function. and buy fuel pump internals then AP.
2.DONATE
3.DEFINITELY changes sound. IMO makes is raspy. Just cut the muffle off and run the mid pipe and be happy, thats what i did.

Here you go n00b, 2,290 results. Use google search to search this specific site. Site's search sucks. Some gains, maybe a few g/s up in higher RPMs. I didn't notice tone change.

BTW, just spend the $85 and buy a damn test pipe. You may need that cat for any warranty work or future sale/smog. If you can't kick down $85, just save for a week or two.

I dont get it then. wont taking the cat off and getting a test pipe basically be the same thing then?

dale_gribble 03-19-2014 12:29 AM

Ya, pretty much except the cat is more valuable than a test pipe and you can still fail emissions with the second cat gone if you have emissions tests.

I don't get why its even worth discussion <$100 mod, especially given the $1,000+ in mods you already have. That's in the noise. Gut your cat or get a test pipe. Doesn't really matter. I have to save my cats for state emissions inspections. If you don't have to, then gut it.

hmm i see i see. so basically when i gut it all the garage does is put a random pipe there instead correct? instead of a test pipe. im new to all this so sorry for the noobness lol and naw i live in florida there are no emissons tests here so its all good. but if i gut the cat, i cant still save it?

Then update your sig. And no its not the same. Our cars have a CAT in the down pipe after the turbo, then it flows to a resonator then muffler. As @dale_gribble said. just buy the test pipe(it replaces the resonator) and be happy.

Im sure if you clicked the link that dale_gribble posted and read them you would have found your answer.

dale_gribble 03-19-2014 12:36 AM

The only way you are getting the cat out is if you break it apart in small pieces. It's a ship in a glass bottle.

so this is what is on my mind right now. our cars have 2 cats. one on the downpipe and one on the midpipe. downpipe being cat 1. mid being cat 2. i want to take the second one off since very soon i will be getting a downpipe uncatted so ill be running a full straight pipe if i remove my second cat. but i dont want to get a race pipe or anything. just literally cut the cat off and put a pipe there.

so then how is the cat saved when getting a race pipe and not when its cut off?

Ok Ima be nice now to end this thread. Buy the test pipe replace cat 2 with race pipe. Buy catless downpipe and remove cat 1 with Down pipe. You will be straight pipe until you get to the muffler

If you don't wanna buy a test pipe for cat 2 I hope ur exhaust shop has just straight pipe for you. Also a cat is saved buy cutting a couple inches of extra pipe off in both directions of the cat. With the downpipe you just unbolt it from the turbo and from a flange further down the exhaust path.

None that i know of. I had mine out for 6 months. Then i put it back in and had the muffler cut out and a custom single exit exhaust put in.

Don't waste your time de-catting, getting those things out of there is a pain in the ass. Spend 80 bucks on a test pipe.

Sound wise: Here's what your car will sound like from the outside with an intake and test pipe. It's mostly a muffled, angry sounding BLUGHHHUGHUGHGUHGUGH *psh BLUGHGHGUGHUGHGUGHGUGH.

Power: Noticeable increase, definitely.

Downsides: Have internals. Intake and TP was when I noticed my FP going down the shitter after the first log I took. Internals were ordered the same second I saw that log.
