2013 MS3 wheels getting stolen???? I was told by a few people (and a dealership) that I need wheel locks for my new MS3 cause people have been getting their cars left on blocks? (even heard there is a "black market" for the 2013 rim) I have done so since but can anyone put some truth to this statement or is this just a load of BS? I do fell better since I have done it casue I frequent a few diffrent big cities often and the last thing I want it to come out one morning and hove my ride on sitting blocks or better yet the pavement. Have a bandit day! |
Were they trying to sell you said wheel locks? That sounds ridiculous... if it was in fact a problem (which i doubt) it is probably only in your area |
lol trying to sell you wheel locks. Our wheels aren't wide enough for those thieves to sell to the hellaflush stretched tire market. |
Years ago our dealership (before I worked here) had several sets of GEN1 wheels stolen. They left the cars on blocks. I believe it was 4-5 sets that were stolen. They caught the guy a few hours later. Tough to explain all those matching wheels in your car. I'd say there is somewhat of truth to it, although $60 wheel locks are not going to put much money in the salesman's pocket. |
Wheel locks also arent going to stop someone thats looking to steal wheels lol |
No they were not trying to sell me wheel locks. I got that done on my own just for peace of mind, not cause of what anyone or any place said. I don't think it would happen in this po dunk shit hole I live in but when I go to the city ummm yea I get worried. |
My car came with wheel locks installed on it... LOL. |
Local dealership had an evoX left on blocks a week or so ago with the bbs' gone... Some truth to needing wheel locks |

I got a wheel lock stuck before...took 10 seconds to hammer on a socket and get it off LOL If they want them, they're getting them. Quote:

Wheel locks are like those tiny little padlocks people use on doors, it'll keep an honest person honest, but if I want to sell your rims on msf for top dorra, wheels locks won't stop me  Hmm, hitting the dealer tonight, tomorrow group buy for 5 sets of mint pu rims ftw. |
The Mazda locks are better than most since the pattern is in a flat surface vs hammering a socket around other types. I don't think it's common place but it does happen and I do use the Mazda wheel locks myself. |
There was one member on this forum who had his gen pu wheels stolen and his car was left on blocks. There is a thread somewhere about it. |
I agree with evil MS3, i lost the key to my wheel locks and i just hammered a slightly smaller socket onto each locking lug nut and used a breaker bar. Alot easier than it probably should have been. But yeah, if a thief wants that shit he may be willing to cause alittle damage to get what he wants. After all, even if he has to sell them for half of what they are worth, that is still money he didn't have before. |
A few years back I was driving by a local dodge dealer and 3-4 srt-8s were sitting on the ground with now wheels.... thats a hard hit haha. |
Hmm, I think it would be funnier to swap the 2013 Pu Wheels for some slighlty curbed 2010 wheels with corded tires instead of just leaving it on blocks. ;) |
I've always had wheel locks, though I've never had any particularly fancy wheels. They've all been like the factory MS3 wheels. Nice looking, but nothing special. The few bucks spent on wheel locks is worth small amount of motivation for a thief to move to something easier. Quote:

Do you guys leave your windows down, your doors unlocked, and your garage door open? After all, if a thief wants to break in to your car, none of those are going to stop them. |
I thought the point was if the MS3 wheel was PARTICULARLY a popular wheel for thieves. |

Put another way, why would it only matter in a line of 2013 MS3s? What if you are in a lot with a G37, a WRX, and a Camaro SS. All of those wheels are probably in the same very general category. The thief will take the easiest ones to steal, with the locks being a factor. Quote:

I'm going to steal @evil MS3;'s wheels, he just doesn't know it yet. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

Something about dark/gunmetal wheels get thieve's attention so I'm not surprised this is happening with the 13' wheels. |

I got peddled way hard to buy lojack. While that might balance out if you live in the city (saving on your insurance), it just doesn't make much sense. If someone wants your wheels, or car, they will take it! I would be way more concerned with someone stealing the whole car, pety thieves go for the wheels. In Medford a guy was just driving around with a flatbed and taking cars right out of driveways. And FYI, the smart car jackers steal the car and park it in a known location for a few days to see if the cops come by before they take it outright. http://www1.whdh.com/features/articl...go-car-thefts/ |
you guys are making it hard by hammering on the sockets, any accomplished thief will have a master wheel lock set (there is only about a dozen different patterns for the mazda locks) or even easier they make twist sockets that bite into the lock as you turn to loosen the lock. |
McGard wheel locks are the easiest to compromise. The older bmw teeth locks were slightly better. If paranoid get 5 locks per wheel ;-) |
Wheel locks make no difference to professionals. everyone I know who has had their rims stolen had at least one wheel stud broken. Even ones who didn't have wheel locks. I guess it's quicker???? Look at the next tunner car/donk you see on steelies proably missing a wheel stud. Now will they deter amateurs....maybe.. Sent from my DROIDX using Tapatalk 2 |
Just boot all 4 wheels. It's what I do every time I go out on the town. Added bonus: cops can't boot you if you're already booted! |

Ingenious, but shady. |
I have seen one instance of it: Tires, Rims Stolen from Rare Car | NBC Connecticut |
maybe they are mistaking them for teh rx8 r3 wheels? those are insanely expensive |
The ms3 wheels at the dealership are pretty expensive. the r3 wheels though are $1200 a piece. |
Or $1600 for a set in VIP... Yeah, I would bet they are popular to steal. Pretty color and all. |
Should put this in the sales section but I got 6 sets of '13 MS3 wheels for sale.:moon: And apparently if you spray enough freon on a lug nut you can snap it and the bolt off with a srewdriver and a hammer. That is just what I have heard... |
If there is a "Black Market" for the 2013 wheel's Please PM me. I've got 2012 wheel's and it would save me from having to get them powder coated. :) nug-nug wink-wink say no more! |
