The $22 Delrin Shift Knob

3 Attachment(s)
I made a mention of the Delrin shift knob I picked up in another thread and there seemed to be a decent amount of interest so I figured I'd do a quick writeup. I figured it would get more views in here than the interior forum which is kinda dead. If mods want to move it there have at it.

So I have pretty big hands and couldn't deal with it not fitting in my palm or being able to comfortably wrap my fingers around it. So I remembered hearing about Delrin knobs since my E36 M3 days but I had never tried one out. I ponied up the money for Amazon prime so I figured I would look for something generic there first. This is what I found:

I thought the shape looked comfortable and the price was right so I picked it up. It ended up taking over a week and a half to get to my apt, shipped out of FL. But hey the shipping was free? At first after installing it I thought that it felt a little cheap and plasticky but now after having it on for a week or so I really like it. It's countersunk so it sits nice and low. I took a pic next to the stock knob to show that it is physically shorter and it may sit a little lower because of the countersinking. Overall it felt lower/shorter/more direct than the stock heavy knob.

For the money I think this is pretty hard to beat. They also offer it as a standard round knob which looks even lower than this one for the same price. I think that could be worth a try as well although my next step up from this one might be a similarly lightweight, round, VooDoo in aluminum. That way I have two slightly different ones. Happy hunting everyone.

bombdotcom 04-18-2013 09:21 PM

any chance uve had your hands on the cobb knob? had that in my '08 speed and loved it! its delrin also, wondering if it felt similar?

manila 04-18-2013 09:34 PM

What's the difference in weight compared to the stock knob?

GrFa 04-18-2013 09:38 PM

I haven't had the Cobb knob in my hands but this one does look to be the same shape but without the metal ring around the bottom so I can't really comment. It would be cool if its no ring, same knob, and 1/5 the price.

As far as weight goes they list this at 112g. It looks like the stock knob is 265g so a little less than half as heavy.

bombdotcom 04-18-2013 09:48 PM

ya the cobb knob was super light but it felt awesome! i loved the delrin material, first time ive had any experience with it. might have to go for it! thanks bud

ps cobb know is 115 g so damn close

12blkms3 04-18-2013 10:20 PM

Looks cool but I like feeling some weight when I'm shifting hard!

bombdotcom 04-18-2013 10:23 PM

thats what she said...

12blkms3 04-18-2013 10:24 PM

Was only a matter of time!!!!

You must be VIP to buy, sell or trade on MSF. Become a VIP and list a want to buy thread and I'm sure you could have a stock knob in your hand within a couple of days at most.

Nice. Mine was when I was back in UK NA 320 hp engine was fun although I almost killed myself a few times. No traction control or stability. Just LSD. Lol

Dralphy 04-19-2013 06:24 PM

Just put an order in for one. Can't beat that price!

ahfunaki 04-19-2013 10:02 PM

I also ordered one a few hours ago! For $22 shipped I figure if I don't like it I'll throw it at someone...

This will be a perfect knob for the summer heat though...

Yes threads are delrin as well, no insert.

Glad a few of you guys are picking one up. I'd like to see the plain round if someone goes that route.

AZSPEED3 04-19-2013 11:18 PM

Got mine today, figured I'd post another pic.

First thoughts, this thing definitely has more girth than most other knobs that I've tried ( stock, Sure AGS, Sure Atom, JBR Cylindrical ) so if you have a small hand I would say this isn't for you.

Initial quality is great, feels smooth and the finish is nice.

It definitely sits lower, which I think a lot of people will like. Gives you more of that short throw feel.

For a $22 knob that screws on and fits really well I don't think you can beat it if you don't mind it's bigger size.

I really think the look goes great with the interior too.

I'm definitely very happy with my purchase.

Mazda MAZDASPEED7 Manual Delrin Tear Drop Shift Knob 10x1 25 2011 11 | eBay

just ordered mine last night, cant wait.

exentix 04-25-2013 08:17 PM

when i had my twm derlin knob, the only real complaint i had about it (besides the $140 freaking price tag) was the fact that the derlin was kinda hard to keep ahold of. i noticed myself slipping off especially going into 3rd. that was about stock weight, and the hot/cold resistance was nice too.

bombdotcom 04-25-2013 08:32 PM

ya i had the cobb knob and loved it. after awhile tho the oils from your hand get it all polished and easier to slip like you said. i personally loved the material tho

Colin1337 04-25-2013 10:34 PM

Love my Cobb knob, wish it had a little more weight to it though

didnt realize there was a thread for this thing. i picked one up off ebay a few weeks ago and definitely like it better than stock even though its not even half the weight of the stock knob. looks nice and feels good.

That is the round/not teardrop shaped one. If you pick it up let me know what you think. Something round is going to be my next try, I'm thinking something metal though.

Not trying to thread jack but if you guys want a different style shift knob for under 25$, the tomei duracon (70mm) worked well for me. Looks and feels great. It's lighter though so you might not like that but it works well with my TWM full replacement shifter. Plus side is (just like the delrin), it never gets warm, even in hot ass days.

Shit I just saw this and post a thread about the Tomei I just got!

4G63 05-02-2013 10:22 AM

I have an AMS Delrin knob on the Evo. Def nice that it never gets hot or cold. Don't know how much the one in the OP weighs but mine is really light, heavier knobs are way better IMO the lightness of mine makes high rpm shifts hard sometimes

CamSpeed360 05-02-2013 12:39 PM

Thanks! Purchased. Will review next week when it arrives.

Dralphy 05-02-2013 08:36 PM

After having this for a week, I do like it, however it has been warm to the touch after sitting all day, and it has been a max of 73 degrees. If this is supposed to resist the heat/cold it doesn't do it well IMO, but time will tell once it actually gets hot out.

same here bro. Mine was hot today. It was 97 degrees outside though and my car was sitting in the sun for a couple hours.

Depending on the knob you can drill the thread hole out a little deeper and melt in lead/solder to add some weight to it.

omgvance 05-03-2013 09:12 AM

Got mine, definitely worth the money. I feel everyone has said everything about it so I won't write a ton more. Mine has a few small blemishes in it, but then again its a $22 shift knob so I am extremely happy

You can't expect something to just "not get hot" if you put anything in an oven at 100 degrees, it doesn't matter what material. It will eventually get up to that temperature. However depending on certain materials, you can notice a difference in how long it takes for something to get warm/cool.

CamSpeed360 05-03-2013 01:04 PM

I love my 2010 knob because it has the metal ring on the shifter that the new ms3 doesn't have. However with the recent 95-101 degree weather that metal rings burns the hand, while rest of leather knob is useable.

This $22 knob if left in 100 degree car, will it require a sock to cover it or be usable Luke the bottom leather of my OEM kno in hot weather?

Tizbitz 05-06-2013 06:59 AM

I ordered one about a week ago, but slow shipping is slow. Should have it in hand sometime around midweek.

Is soon as you put your hand on the knob and get that a/c going it will cool down quickly.

spinfly 05-06-2013 12:54 PM

I think you guys misunderstand what they mean by heat and cold resistance in the Delrin polymer. This doesn't mean it won't get hot, but resists the expanding and shrinking caused by temp extremes. Delrin is used under the hood in many plastic auto parts. It also is very strong and used in one product I think everyone has come in contact with...Bic lighters.

Tizbitz 05-06-2013 02:06 PM

Just got it and put it on, definitely worth the $22. There's not really anything else I can add that's not already covered in this thread. Feels nice and solid in the hand.

So i went to their ebay page like another member recommended and I used the Make an Offer option and offered them 20.00 and got an instant approval with still the free priority shipping. They must have a limit set up that automatically will approve. If anyone else makes this purchase you should offer them even less, it will only get denied at worst then you can offer them more.

Yup it's set at $20.00. I went to $19.00 but it wouldn't take it. Everybody offer $20.00 and get it a few bucks cheaper!!!

bvbull200 05-22-2013 05:33 PM

I've had a delrin knob for a little while now. I like the light weight. Takes any assumptions out of shifting in that the shifter only goes where you put it.

I ordered mine elsewhere, though, since they offered customization. I had a Mavs pin embedded in mine.

Playaj 05-22-2013 07:57 PM

Damn, no words

xtascox 05-25-2013 02:37 PM

Got mine today and I'm still undecided. The knob itself is excellent quality but the lighter weight makes shifts feel "cheap" IMO. I'm not really digging the fact that it sits a little lower than stock either. It has a great feel in my hand (that's what she said) but I'm still up in the air whether this will replace the stocker. I can say that I felt more confident shifting since I could feel the gear engagement better and I think that is a good thing. I'll re-evaluate once I install my SSP (along with 15 other mods) next weekend. If someone came out with a shifter extension I think I'd use this knob for it in a heartbeat.

2012FailWheelDrive 05-25-2013 02:56 PM

Got mine in last night. The guy emailed me and told me that he gave me 50 percent off be cause it took him 2 weeks to ship it. So for $11.50 this knob is excellent quality and feels great with my twm replacement, even for the whopping $22 originally, lol, I would still be just as satisfied. I highly recommend this knob for anyone who want a lighter than stock knob and doesn't want tp pay $60+

lol

I installed my CorkSport shifter bushings today so I figured I'd give the knob a second try. This time around I'm very pleased and really enjoying the fact I feel more connected with the car. Coming from my previous car where the shifter was part of the transmission and not rod connected I can see why the heavier knob on that car didn't lose the feel of the transmission. Thumbs up in my book and I can't wait to feel it with the SSP next weekend.

Don't drink the heavy knob Kool-Aid.

The lighter knob, paired with a lighter counterweight, puts control of the shift mechanism back in your hand, and not at the whims of momentum.

Yep, that's exactly how I'm using mine.

lighter knob + solid shifter bushings + corksport counterweight = the way to go

The lighter knob, paired with a lighter counterweight, puts control of the shift mechanism back in your hand, and not at the whims of momentum.

It feels more...precise...like I control exactly where the shifter goes...like there's no "assumption" in my shifts. Much better Imo.

I Tapped that

I ordered black & got white. :261:
Overall it feels great for $22 bucks, just looks like a light bulb against a black interior. Its easy to see outta your peripheral though.

Just ordered one myself can't beat that price. I've read a few places it doesn't get that hot. Which would be awesome I have a arc titanium knob now and that thing is untouchable after a couple hours in the AZ heat

Well here's a recap from my last mishap... vendor quickly corrected the problem :slaphappy:, & now I'm not so sure if the q ball was such a bad idea. Still pleased with the overall product, & now on to the shortcut & counterweight. Who knows, I may add the solid shift bushings too.

Got mine. Came in the right color and was shipped super fast. I have had it for about 6 days now and I actually love it. The biggest reason is that it doesn't get hot at all. It looks great, great fitment and as far as it being light not heavy I can't tell the difference in shifting.

The only downside is just getting used to the feeling of delrin. When you first open it up it definitely feels like plastic. Once installed it's hard to tell. There is a small point on the very top of mine I can feel but can't see. I thought that would drive me to putting on one of my old ones but after a couple days I don't notice it at all.

So in the end I feel like it was a great inexpensive buy. If you want to change up the look of your interior for not that much I'd definitely recommend this knob.

Ordered mine a few days ago. I'll post my thoughts this weekend.

I just received mine. I think it smashes the stock knob. I have large hands, and this feels so much better to grip than the semi-cylindrically shaped stock knob. Shifts feel easier, too. It's a total win.

Lighter = better. You feel more of the transmission. Couple this with a shifter weight delete + MT90 and bcuz race car.

It's all about personal feel, I have this knob and never put it back on after two weeks of trying it out. I have a twm and like the heavier weight much better

What shifter setup is everyone using? I thought it felt like garbage until I pulled off my JBR SSP and did the shifter weight delete. Now I'm shifting buttery smooth and the light knob makes makes it quick.
