After the Dunlops..

18k miles out of the stock dunlops. Now im doing tons of research, trying to find the best option for my next set. I live in Maryland so i need all-season. Im looking for decent tread wear with good grip. So far the Nitto Motivo and the Continental DWS's have good reviews.. Anyone have suggestions? Thanks!

ANITIX87 02-13-2013 07:55 PM

Why all-season? Get performance summers, and a cheap set of steelies and winter tires for the few months you risk snow. The difference is astronomical, and worth it. My steelies and winter tires cost $600, new.

Any all season is a compromise. I went Michelin pilot super sports and never looked back. Huge upgrade from the dunslops.

Easter Bunny 02-13-2013 08:05 PM

I live in maryland too. You don't need all seasons. That said the dws seem to be better in most conditions than the dunlops. Even dry.

Deldran 02-13-2013 08:08 PM

I love my dws

I replaced my stock dunlops with the Conti Extreme DWS. Got about 23k from my stock dunlops. I really like the DWS.

Alexander 02-13-2013 09:16 PM

About to get my stock tires replaced with these
225/40-18 Falken Azenis RT-615K Tires

Fuck all season tires, get something grippy as fuck for the summer and get another set of wheels with winter tires. If you try to compromise you aren't going to be happy, pinky promise :bigok:

Speed3_Guy 02-13-2013 10:08 PM

I used up my Dunlops pretty quick so I have DWS' for the winter and Nitto NT05's for the summer. The DWS' are good enough but they are clearly an all-season tire. If you are willing to do a winter set and a summer set I would strongly recommend the NT05's, they are cheaper than Azenis and they grip just as well. Ive had mine for 5k miles and the are awesome!

Littlescroll 02-13-2013 11:11 PM

My next set will be pilot super sports. If I wanted to go a cheaper route the new bfg comp - 2s are pretty dang good.

If I went all season, the Bridgestone potenza re970 is one of the very best. Got to drive those at an autocross track and they were surprisingly good.

MS3MYK 02-14-2013 01:28 AM

Federal RSR for sticky ass tires on the cheap. Then get a winter set up with the savings

The best all season tire you can buy right now is the new Bridgestone RE970. It's more than the DWS, but is a better tire.
http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tests/...y.jsp?ttid=165

I've had numerous sets of the previous RE960 on cars and they were great. My wife has the 970 on her Legacy GT and they are amazing for an all season.

This should be in the wheel and tire forum...

CWP_MS3 02-14-2013 05:43 AM

Nator DC tire of choice is the conti DWS. You'd know that if you came to the meets... Just sayin... ;)

Dralphy 02-14-2013 06:39 AM

I'm running the Nitto Motivo's, about 3k miles on them so far. From the snow we've had I haven't driven in it since I've had a 4wd vehicle to get around in, but they have better dry road traction than the Dunlops, and wet road driving is very good as well. Just a thought!

Tapa' what?

Awesomesauce 02-14-2013 06:43 AM

Is anyone running these?

Ezekiel81923 02-14-2013 07:12 AM

I got 27k miles out of the Dunlops, wore two down to the cords so I got my moneys worth.

Just got the conti extreme dws's and they're awesome. Fantastic in the rain and better than the Dunlops on dry pavement. Its snowed twice since I got them but it wasn't sticking yet on the roads when I was out there. The Dunlops were TERRIBLE so I can't imagine the DWSs are worse

I looked at those but they're pretty expensive. I know they're good tho.
I'lll be looking at the Nitto NeoGen tires when it comes time for a new set

Good things in life seldom come cheap. But I hear ya the old man behind me at the tire store about fell over when I peeled off 11 crisp Ben Franklins for a set of tires. He told me I shpuld double check the price because his set for his Buick was only $480.

marco427 02-14-2013 10:13 AM

I replaced the OEM Dunlops with DWS's, and feel that the handling is about equal. Neither tire held up well to my mountain road games; I got a little over 12k out of the Dunlops before they hit the wear bars, and about the same out of the Contis. I did receive a 40% tread wear discount on a second set of DWS's, but I doubt that they'll do it again if I'm ready for replacements that soon.

hamfisted 02-14-2013 12:58 PM

I've got the DWS also, and I've been really impressed. Dry grip seems to be on par with the OEM Dunlops, which I wasn't expecting in going from a summer to all-season tire. IMO the DWS is great for street driving, but you'd probably want a summer tire if you're looking to do autox.

Jesus man...is your alignment in spec, do you rotate your tires? I seem to recall that the Conti DWS has a 6yr/50,000 mile treadwear warranty. If you only got 12k out of them, your car is either messed up, or you're an incredibly aggressive driver.

racingrayson 02-14-2013 01:41 PM

I've got re970s on my 6 and I'm pleased with them. They have a decent amount of grip and after ~20,000 miles they still have plenty of wear left. The shoulders are worn down from a track day and autocross though.

Stock tires are a JOKE, I got ride @ like 8k miles. They were crazy scarey in the rain. I researched, problably about 10-15 hours total (not even kidding).

Conti DWS's are the best bang for your buck, I swear by this tires. I believe it's the best all season tire you can buy for the price - I paid about $150 a tire from Tire Rack.

Pros:
Great dry/wet traction
NO hydroplaning
A+ in grip even with my car's mod list & tune (has way more than stock tires & stock are summer only!)
50,000 tread life (supposidly lol)
light/deep snow traction - very decent

Cons:
Tires flat spot very easily and is highly annoying the 1st mile u drive.
Handling - the tires dont have a quick turn in when turning, they do kinda lag a bit, so u loose a little steering feel IMO. Doesnt affect traction though.

I also had Pirelli P Zero Nero All Season Ultra High Performance All-Season for 40k miles on my 1st gen MS3 - compared to DWS's - no flat spotting, better handling, but less traction, and less light/deep snow traction. They are on Tire Rack currently for $138/ea.

Umm...did u rotate them (DWS's) every oil change? If you only got 12k out of them, u had to light them up A LOT or drive your shit very ruff lol

AustinK 02-14-2013 05:40 PM

I love my Continental DWS's, I had them on a few Subarus before my current car and they have treated me well every time.

Alignment was in spec, and the tires were rotated at around 6000 miles. I use the car's good handling, but I don't slide it (my wife disagrees). A big factor may be that more than half my miles are on a somewhat abrasive and twisty road between my house and town. For me to get 50000 miles out of a set of tires they would have to be made out of carbon ceramic.

bstover17 02-15-2013 05:17 AM

I own a set of DWS also and have been pretty damn happy with them. We don't have a TON of snow but when it did snow they performed how I imagined they would.

ThizSpeed3 02-15-2013 02:43 PM

are the Falken Ziex ZE-612 any good?

pedal2metal 02-15-2013 03:49 PM

I didn't read all the posts on this thread, but am willing to give my .02. When the winter got here I got some blizzaks and absolutely HATED how they felt!!! I had them for 2 days and went and returned them for Conti DWS's which I LOVE! ( I had before on my gen1) Where I live we probably get bad from 1x per week to maybe 1x every 3 weeks. I could not justify the feel of a snow tire when I may only actually need it 4 days out of the month. The conti's do good enough in the snow but you dont want to travel if its not needed. I dont think the DWS grip AS good as the stock dunlops, but they are MUCH quieter and grip 100x's better in the snow. For me, they are the best way to go for the winter. I drive alot I am in outside sales, and the last think I wanted to do is drive a couple hours a day for 2 weeks straight with snow tires on. I am going to leave the DWS on stock wheels for winter months and will buy a new wheel set with either Conti DW's or Michelin Super Sports... Depending on cash flow! : ) I have my stock dunlops with only 2k on them, but refuse to put them back on my car. Hopefully someone buys them!

So to answer your question, if it doesn't snow daily I would say DWS if you want a year around tire. They are great and last long, but they leave a little more to desire in the summer months. But if you just want "good" grip, and a all year tire you cant go wrong!

Rich990 02-15-2013 10:22 PM

I got a set of Goodyear eagle F1 assymetric 2, and I'm happy with em. Grip nicely.

90210 02-16-2013 07:12 PM

If weather isn't a concern ( always hot), and you have track wheels, what would be a quiet, highyway tire you guys would recommend?

read, search, read some more lol.

razorscs 02-16-2013 09:35 PM

Pirelli P-Zero's hands down. So freaking awesome. I've had Kumho's and Conti DWS and while they were both great tires, the Pirelli's are the best so far.

Second.

I know it's a summer tire, but an "Ultra High Performance All-Season Tire" couldn't be more of an oxymoron, IMO. The things that make a winter tire work are the things that make a summer tire not work, and vice-versa -- it's the ultimate in compromise. Decent at both, but good at neither.

The Hankooks are _WAY_ quieter than the stock tires, grip a lot better in both the dry and the wet, and are relatively inexpensive (~$140/tire). I am really impressed with this tire.

dbrier 02-20-2013 05:32 AM

You say that, but you can't run the V12 in the snow at all. A good all season tire (RE970 or DWS) will have very similar dry performance to the cheaper summer tires, exceed them in the wet, and are still drivable in the winter and moderate snow. You just have to pay more.

The tire rack tests tell the story.

V12's are horrible in the snow. Unfortunately, I'm speaking from first hand knowledge.
