When I was 17, my friend and I were heading to his camp in northwest buttfuck NH after a concert in my jetta. I had just switched the gauges in the jetta and the gas gauge wasn't working. I knew I was running pretty low but I was waiting for the dummy light to warn me...and it never did.
So we ran out in the highway, walked to the nearest gas station, and some bro dudes offered us a ride back. The whole time, they kept making rape innuendos and left us with these wise words:
Don't ever go straight; Go forward.

Needless to say, I'll never run out of gas again.

I had been running on empty the past 4 days in the speed this week just out of curiosity. Info panel listed as having 1 mile left to go to empty when I finally filled up. I put in 13.6 Gallons, so if I were to hit empty on the panel, I'd still have a good 2 gallons of gas left. Food for thought.

yes, that would be what's called "RESERVES" for people like you who test it.

The car computer is set in a way that it recognizes the fuel tank capacity as 13.9 gallons instead of the full 15.9... The 2 gallons is for safety margin...

I've done that in my Buick. I hit an unexpected traffic jam and ran out of gas. The car would "run", but it wouldn't accelerate....so I mashed the test button to get the tank moving several times....and made it!

And yeah, I don't usually refill the MS3 unless it reads completely empty...then I'm able to pump in 13.6 gallons.

OK, so results:
3 days back, I shut down the engine with 20km left (~12miles), today, 0C / 32F) it shown 17km left (~10.5miles)
till I cleaned all the snow (like 5inch high), and perhaps weight 100 pounds, the PC did show 3km left (almost 2 mile).
then in 5km it shown "0Km" left.
mounted the racelogic stuff to count distance via gps, and did.

now hold...

68km, or 42.25miles

(going 4mph under the lowest speed limit on highway, then 2 small villages)

and that weapon at gas station, or how you call it, it allowed like 55.6L 14.68gallons, (then I rounded it to 82euros 110USD, 98octane 10% cheaper accross Austria border).

Hm, so the PC is REALLY OFF a "little" bit

But I was little bit worried, read te manual while driving, to be sure that i have L3 engine, with 60,00L tank.

phef... strande there was still 4liter, almost a gallon space in the tank? maybe I could pust 1/2 of that then it would be 100,00% full, but still, amazing.

according to PC, on highway it was 5.9L/100km, that is ~39.87 MPG
(not sure how accorate is that, I'm testing it now)

anyway, odometer measures the distance pretty accurate, so far I have done like 120km on the MS3 odo, and 10Hz gps odo shower like 120.5km. testing it because want to test the MPG accuracy of the PC.

Hope this helps someone in the future..

It should be pretty obvious by now, and if it isn't it will be, that the way remaining gas has been measured for God knows how long is with a lever arm and floating mechanism. Want to know the reason it always seems to take the gas meter so long to drop down a blip when you fill up? Because the amount of gas in your tank needs to drop below the floater so that it can start moving down.

If you're smart enough, the distance traveled, driving style, and conditions that you were in when that first blip occurred from a full tank will be the same when the floater hits the bottom of the tank (when the car reads you have nothing left)...according to the pivot point and the floating mechanism, you have nothing, but there's still gas in there that is dropping below the mechanism.

So it should be possible to do like 60-70miles on "empty" tank ?

btw, if the engine is 2,3 liter, does that means there is always 2,3liter of gas in it ?

seriously?

It means that the cylinders can hold 2.3 liters of air/fuel mix, static, in each cycle. It's a measure of it's pumping capabilities, without respect to atmospheric pressure or fuel.

This means that without boost or vaccum, the engine can ingest 2.3 liters of air for each combustion cycle (2 revolutions).

At zero miles on the computer you easily have at least 15 miles of driving left. I believe the most I've gone is about 20.

BTW, the tank is at least 17 gallons (I'm well aware Mazda says it's 15.9) as I've put over that in the car a number of times, with no spillage (17.4, 17.6, and 17.4). I regularly get about 400 miles per tank at a calculated (not computed via the trip computer) average of about 24mpg. The computer reads about 2mpg high, in my experience. The longest I've gone on a single tank is 434 miles @ 24.66 mpg.

If you fully fill the tank (takes a while), you'll get about 85 miles out of the first block on the gas gauge. I usually fill about 15-16 gallons (after the pump shuts off, you can typically still put another 2-2.5 gallons in the car, albeit rather slowly; it also depends on the pump, some are easier to "fully" fill with than others).

I always watch the trip odometer because I don't trust the fuel gauge or the trip computer -- probably my paranoia from riding my bike, which has no fuel gauge.

You should never top off your tank. You aren't pumping more gas into the tank when you do it, you are forcing fuel into other places. This includes forcing some fuel back through the station's vapor line and back into their storage tank (paying for gas and giving it back to them). Also, you can ruin your evap system by overfilling.

If you guys are unsure how much fuel is in the tank, you can check the exact amount of fuel in your car using the diagnostic test.

1)Shut off the engine
2)Push and hold the trip reset button
2)Turn the key to the on position while still holding the trip reset button
3)When the odometer screen display "test", release the trip reset button
4)The speedo and tach needle should do a full sweep and then stay steady at a certain rpm/speed. The odometer display should read [01 | oo]
5)Press the trip reset button twice to display the exact fuel amount that you have.. It should look something like this.
[03 d15| ##.#]... The ##.# is the amount of fuel remaining in your car.

Ok, new story:

I did 82km (51miles) on "zero mile range" and then stopped at the gas station, and some guy there with DIESEL !!! car was first, just due to i did not speed on roundabout (well with so low gas i could not afford at all), and then when he was there for just under 2 minutes, my engine shut down.. it was uphill, so that was quite a problem, as i could not push the car alone, so aksed him to help

anyway, to the point, 51 miles on reserve, then no gas at all (while standing, luckily, no idea what would happen on a highway..), could not start of course..

and then, 57,11liters (15,08gallon) will the gas gun or how ever you call it shut itself down (could do maybe 1/2 gallon more, no idea really)

but im happy no damage to the car took place

I've ran into the 0 a few times, the most fuel I have had to put in the car was 14.25 gallons, so even running below 0 I had fuel left, likely just enough for one cold start as to running it low, I haven't seen the pickup on these but stuff does collect in the bottom of the tank, unless the pickup is at the bottom... running low like this will likely not render the car useless (as was the case with some mechanical injection systems in the past) but will likely cause premature fuel filter failure as the crap being sucked up will likely end up there.

I've driven it on zero before, and the worst part about it was that I had no idea where a gas station was. Stupid @chimmike; for living in the middle of nowhere.

A genpu tried racing me too.

Haha, I passed him when I had 2 miles left on the dash. Didn't pay any attention until he flys up next me and tells me "Nice car!". I said thanks, but didn't say it back. LOL.

Asked me if I wanted to race, told him I would if he would get me to a gas station. He said no and took off like a genpu fag.

don't bitch at me, I have two Publix's within a mile of me and plenty of gas stations.

You're just a hipster, and apparently it's not cool to fill up until you run out.

Check valves, gas can't get into the EVAP system, the pump has one-way valves and the mechanics that count the gas delivered only spin in one direction, etc.

According to my odometer, unless I'm getting like 30+mpg (not possible), I'm actually putting the amount of gas into the TANK that I think I am. Gasoline doesn't come out of the pump with enough force to push it into anywhere it wasn't designed to go.

Went 442 miles on the last tank @ 25.4mpg (filled ~17.4 gallons).

17.4 gallons in one tank? I've never put more than 14-15 in mine even close to 5 miles left on the computer

Has anyone ever left the gas pump in their car and drove off? I had a buddy do it and laughed at him! Then, about a year later I did it in my gen 1!
I put the nozzle in and sat back in my car and my phone rang. I got some exciting news and hung up and thought I already removed it. I started it and got about 20ft and heard a loud POP!! I said "ohhhhhhh fuck".... I backed up, and went inside the station. The guy had a grin and said, I have good and bad news for you. He said "the good news is, it happens all the time" and here is the bad news.. He handed me a piece of paper that said "it looks like you forgot to remove the gas pump before driving off, and you broke a safety coupler. We stock these and charge $20 do replace them". I started laughing my ass off and paid the guy $20 bones. He said "don't feel to bad, there is a guy that lives around here that forgot 3 times last summer!!! Now I check several times before driving off!!

Yes, 17.4 in one tank. Several times. I regularly fill 16+ gallons and get 400+ miles per tank. I don't even start looking for gas until I hit around 390 on the trip odometer.
