Default Am I in need of an HPFP yet?

As of now, the only mods I have on the car are a TurboSmart BPV, custom test pipe, resonator delete, muffler delete and a K&N drop-in that I received for free that I put in to see if there was any comparable difference. The airflow is nice in the exhaust -- you can definitely tell there's a lot more breathing going on. However, I am now thinking of adding on the cp-e CAI as well. Can I run the intake as well without needing a new fuel pump? Before you tell me to search and read, I've done a shitload of research regarding this exact setup and I'm still on the fence as to whether or not it's a safe one. I'm well aware that an AP could just as easily dictate this information to me, but I'm a little tight on money and I will be for a while... however, I do want answers from some of the more experienced motorists.

Also, in total, including the CAI, how much HP do you say I'd be looking at over stock with all mods accounted for? How about without CAI? Answers are greatly appreciated.

To the both of you, I've most DEFINITELY heard stories on both sides of the fence. Personally I disagree with needing a fuel pump with test pipe mods, but others such as yourself tell me that I need one. I have a 2013 MS3. I've experienced absolutely zero issues since my test pipe mod along with no CELs and it's been months. I have friends who are very experienced with the MS3 platform and they've told me multiple times that I'm fine as of now. I just wanted more insight as to whether adding a full CAI is crossing the line.

Last I understood you won't get a CEL if your fuel pressure drops to unsafe levels while WOT. Just eventually goes boom.

Definitely need internals, there is a pretty clear cut "recommended mod path" for this car and it's that way for good reason. Having your exhaust sound a little louder isn't worth blowing your shit up.

Edit: I had an intake and tip and my fp was dropping like crazy, I had an AP to monitor so I was quickly informed there was an issue, but you're just playing with fire letting the car breath deeper without making damn sure there's enough fuel AND not monitoring to see if there is an issue.

I agree. I'm a very impatient driver and I've been WOT many, MANY times and have experienced absolutely no issues at all.

I also agree with this post. FWIW, the downpipe is still on the car. Some have said that the AFR might be too far off with my current set of mods + a CAI, others have said that the car will hold.

Read above. I've heard many answers from many different angles as to where one should draw the line. Though the AP is one of the first recommended mods, it is not 100% manditory as your first modification.

Okay to make it pretty clear, easy and simple for you...
You wants to go fast?
You wants to be able to go fast a whole lot?
You plan to make your car go faster as money permits?

If the answer to any of these questions is yes, than consider your fuel pump upgrade an investment in the longevity of your vehicle and your driving experience (plus I heard it adds like 12 hp if you put flame stickers on the housing).

Blowing your shit up will be a whole lot more costly to replace since I somehow doubt Mazda or your insurance would cover your sweet downpipe and "custom tp" set up.

EDIT: Also. most people who are serious about modding their car are conscientious of what they are doing and either have a whole lot of experience and confidence in what they're doing and know for a fact they should be safe, or they use common sense and get a tool that will tell them if they are actually doing themselves any favors just slapping random parts on and calling it a day(read: AP/dashhawk, etc.).

I also went WOT all the time before my internals and felt no ill effects, however my AP logs painted a MUCH different picture. Thankfully I had them and all the good people of MSF to slap me in the face with knowledge so that I could get and install internals and be safe and happy and fast.

OP, let me make this easy for you. The stock fuel pump holds pressure till it doesn't. Some people are lucky, some people are not. I saw some jackass dipping into the 1300's with a downpipe and the stock intake during a 3rd gear WOT log.


Not having upgraded fuel pump internals is like having unprotected sex. Most of the time you might get lucky, but sometimes you don't. $350 is cheaper than a replacement engine.

Well, if you've heard stories on both sides of the fence, doesn't that give you enough caution to think that you ought to get internals? The stock pump internals suck ass on this car and should be one of the first upgrades if you plan on adding power, period. You might be okay with your mods for a while but you might blow your shit up. I wouldn't fuck around with the mods you have and no internals nor AP to monitor.

I just can't understand why people just slap parts on their car without researching first. Makes no sense to me.

And if you're reading any information regarding NOT needing fuel pump internals; those are strictly genwin and MS6 related. Those guys got lucky. It does NOT apply to the GenPu (which is what you have) With just a CS intake on my car I was dipping into the 1,500s. That was more then enough for me to get internals.

b0xer, I rarely post on here but I do log on at least once a day and read up on stuff. These guys here know what they are talking about when it comes to Speeds. It would be very wise to listen to them. Besides why not just install the fuel pump internals and have that piece of mind.

Putting aside all of the personal anecdotes that you have gotten which obviously give you way more confidence than they should, from the number of people that have told you to get internals or you're gonna blow your shit up within the last <60 minutes, you should be able to make a pretty clear decision. If not, well then no one will feel bad when you go boom.

I have a 1986 Turbocharged Buick. We're talking a car that's 28 years old that I've owned for more than 15 years. When I got the car and started to do research in modification, you want to know what was the first thing on everyone's list?....fuel pump and other fuel delivery bits. This is a fundamental first step before you make changes that demand MORE FUEL especially in a turbocharged car.

Will your car blow up tomorrow? No. But continual lean and continual detonation will slowly chew away at bearings, rings, etc. It's not a question of IF, it's a question of WHEN.

Can't tell if serious question is being asked here... How would OP know what you need for your setup if he doesn't even know what he needs for his?

Also, if it is a serious question, the answer is yes.

A quick search of the intro thread and you will know that upgraded internals should be one of the very FIRST mods you do... More air is great for power, but more air + not enough fuel = WILMAAAAAAAAAAA!.

If either you or OP care at all about your car and not having it blow up you will both just quietly make your way to the interwebs and buy internals and then when they come install them and then tell everyone how cool you are bceause you installed internals in your fuel pump and put flame stickers on the housing for extra HP GAINZZ!

I guess I should be getting one then. Since my car's been in the shop for nearly a month, I forgot that I had actually stuck a muffler back on there for my single exit exhaust. So as of now, all I have is a test pipe/resonator delete combo. I don't think the drop-in filter is doing much to hinder the AFR.

However, before slapping an intake into the car, I will be sure to pick up the HPFP. I obviously don't want to ZZB.

No you don't need internals. What you should get next is a wide path intake. You don't need internals until you get better spark plugs or start running high test blinker fluid.
