Another Oil Thread!...

Hey everyone, I'm sure i'm going to get some hate for posting a new thread on oil. But I'm looking for a quick answer.

Well, My girlfriend drives a 2012 Speed3 with 19,000KM's (12,000-ish miles). She was putting all her service records in a binder the other day and noticed that the dealer has been putting in 0W-20 full synthetic oil in her car. So, my question is has this oil done any harm to the car? To me it seems to be very light weight when the recommend is 5W-30. Is there anything I can push for the dealer to do (other then change the oil free of charge)? Would this void any warranty?

Edit: Plus her car burns a lot of oil. More then my FD. Her back bumper was always black even after washing it once a week. So in short this is what pisses me off with dealers. I would like to see if they would just given her a new car. But I highly doubt that would ever happen.

Thanks for any input.

Just ask them to use 5-30. Show them the owners manual lol

hitmeagaintubesock 07-19-2013 04:28 AM

The soot all over tge back is not oil. Its soot from running rich...mine does it I think every gen pu on here does it. But definately put the 5w30 back in it.

The engine wont blowup but the thin oil adds more wear and tear to it. The 20 oil has a much lower HTHS so its gonna wear down a lot faster than 30 oil esp with a turbocharger. Change your own oil next time. This way you will know the task is done properly with the correct oil and procedure. Dealership just wants the $$ and the job done asap. They wont spend time checking if your car is serviced properly.

I would take the car in along with all of the paper work and tell them you want it documented that they had been using the wrong oil in your car so they can't point the finger at you later on if anything goes wrong.

Hey not all dealer techs are dumb asses lol... I've been at a ford dealer 10 years and its easy just hop on alldata.com and find out what oil it takes.. Most don't and if its just the lube techs then yeah they don't care..I would just do it yourself so you know it's done right

Oh I agree. When I had my Tiburon, I took it to the dealer anytime I needed work done, but that's because the service manager there was a family friend and personally did the work for me. So I never worried about my car there. Since I bought the speed at a different dealer, I won't trust anyone to work on my car but myself or my brother who is a mechanic.

budzinski 07-19-2013 09:17 PM

It just comes down to if the tech gives a fuck... I take pride in what I do and always treat the car I'm working on like its mine or a family members and always do it but some guys like the younger kids changing oil making 10 bucks on commission just pop off the filters and dump bulk pump oil in and that's 5w-20.. It's funny cause I watch them put bulk 5w-20 in all the ecoboost engines and they take 5w-30 but they don't care.. I'm lucky cause I have my own 2 lifts and tools so I do all my own work on my cars...

I never trusted my dealership after I got a free oil change as part of buying my car. They never changed it and burnt my clutch up. Thanks a lot Ramsey Mazda! and not to mention I had to take it back for a warranty issue the following week as the clutch switch was all jacked up> Once AGAIN THANK YOU RAMSEY MAZDA! screw the dealers do the work your self. no matter what you ask for they will just laugh and say good luck.

Agreed. When all you do is work on someone else's cars all day it's easy to get complacent ( or not give a fuck).
When it's your car you are working on, one tends to be more exacting. And yes a personal car lift is the only way to go; I bought an ezcarlift 10 years ago - now, I can't imagine life without it. ezcarlift.com (not a plug, just a great tool for the hard core modded).

Bring your own oil and filter in. That's what I do and it ensures you get everything you want. PP 5w30 ftw

IslandSpeed 07-29-2013 07:20 PM

Thanks everyone for the input. My girlfriend phoned the dealer today and found out that they have been 5W-30 in the car but when the service advisor was printing the bill she was putting it in as a base 3. I don't know if I really believe the manger but from now on I'll just bring the oil in myself. Unfortunately I can't do my oil myself due to living in a condo in a downtown core.

intotheice 07-30-2013 11:02 AM

Even if you bring your things in, there still a possibility that they are stealing your parts and put their cheap parts in

cbspd3flip 07-30-2013 11:07 AM

Goddamn people just change your own oil. Some of you act like is it so difficult.

Try changing the oil on my M3 if you want to see difficult.

High end condo's don't allow for you to change your oil in the the parkaid.... I would love a place where I could do my own work on my cars but thats not in the crads right now :(

Not even asking a friend to lend some driveway space?

How'd they burn your clutch up with an oil change? If they didnt chance the oil it still wouldn't burn your clutch

That's pretty bad. All he had to do is drive from the lot to the garage right? He shouldn't be going more than 10mph lol
