Any other GenPu owners have a rattly dash?

It appears my dash (specifically the instrument cluster) likes to rattle at highway speeds. If I hold it - it stops rattling; if I smack it- it stops rattling; if I pull it a bit up - it stops rattling... but eventually it will go back to rattling.

Now before someone says "OMG YOU NUB GOT TO THE DEALER!" - it does not do it all the time; it's unpredictable. Sometimes it'd rattle its head of like no other, sometimes it's as quiet as a mouse.

What I am hoping is that someone here had the same issue and went to the dealer and perhaps... there's a TSB?

MS33SM 05-23-2011 10:52 AM

5th mod in your sig is the culprit.

bcmountainspeed 05-23-2011 11:10 AM

yeah I got the same thing and am just waiting for delivery of my JB rmm so expecting it to get worse

70d RMM causes that? Hrm - I can't recall whether I had the same problem with the stock RMM (I put it on like 15K miles ago but this issue has happened for quite a while)... man that blows.

Any idea how to make it... less rattly?

You could experiment with other mounts or try to locate it. If it's deep in the dash you might be SOL.

I had a TRZ for 200 miles and it made my teeth rattle. Shit was intense.

trf5000 05-23-2011 02:04 PM

My instrument cluster does the same thing. At some point im just gonna rip it apart and fix it.

AegisKlein 05-23-2011 02:09 PM

WHAT, WHAT, I CAN'T HEAR YOU BECAUSE MY DASH IS RATTLING!

Seriously, no problems with my dash. I do have a rattle in my door when my radio is cranking out some heavy bass frequencies.

Yeah I had a TRZ for 50 miles, shit was intense...

EvilMonkey 05-26-2011 07:44 AM

I have the JBR RMM and no rattles. Except for when I first drove the car after installing it. Thought the car was going to fall apart. lol. Now it feels stock again at idle.

alien_sporez 05-26-2011 07:51 AM

I had a TRZ RMM (stiffest street RMM) and had zero dash rattles, even though the RMM made the whole car vibrate at 1000 RPM

Teethkikr 05-26-2011 08:15 AM

I haz the TRZ mount and yeah its rough but I notice my dash/cluster rattle on cold days more than anything.. I am going to take it out and install some foam.. I have it completely gone by placing a piece of cardboard in the crack between the dash and the cluster surround for now.

NinjaT1985 05-26-2011 09:00 AM

What about the SURE RMM with street urethane? anyone having bad rattles?

dachtler 05-26-2011 09:22 AM

I have the CS RMM urethane inserts with the stock RMM, and I have the rattle you describe in the instrument cluster. I've just been ignoring it so far, but will likely need to tear into it and install some foam to quiet it down. I also have a rattle in the driver's side door which I can hear through the window.

mrFanel 05-26-2011 10:52 AM

Does anyone have a good how-to on tearing down the dash? That's one thing I never wanted (or want for that matter) to do :crazy:

tddvrrn 05-26-2011 11:03 AM

here you go: attack instrument panel noise

it's for gen 1, but you should be able to figure it out for yours..
fyi: there is a how to index here

i also had the trz for a while, maybe 10k miles. i spent that whole time hunting and killing rattles. i even took out my cluster, disassembled it and silence it as best i could. did the same for the creaky ass stereo head unit. the front comes off and i used foam insulating tape... then i got a jbr billet rmm and the last few rattles (passenger seat belt, aaarrrggghh!) went away...
you will quickly become über proficient at dash tear down none the less.

eternally_enduring 10-24-2011 10:31 PM

the dreaded genpu dash rattle, i went to dealer they located it fixed it, and quess what it still freaking rattles LOL, mostly cuz dealership didnt want to take whole dash apart and fix it right the first time, they put some foam and stuff where it was rattling like quick fix style and its obviously not good enough, i might take it back or just have shop take apart the dash and fix it right, cuz you cant really trust dealership to do anything right. Aswell i have the most annoying hatch rattle, i cant even pin point exactly where its rattling back there but its starting to piss me off alot, 4.5k kms on 2011 ms3... might have to take it in for more warrenty work boooooo

outshined 10-25-2011 12:06 AM

My 2011 has done it since new. It's marginally worse now with the SURE RMM but honestly I hear it on bumpy roads more than anything. If you put your fingertips on the space between the gauge cluster and dash, you can actually feel them moving independently which is clearly the cause of the noise. I'll tackle mine at some point, but I'm in no rush to ruin my brand new car by taking it apart.

zatara 10-25-2011 06:02 AM

For me it started rattling only after installing my JBR 80 Duro PMM. The 88 Dogbone mount wasn't enough apparently. For me though, the silver trim ring for the Rev counter is what rattles.

I'm going to look into how I can take it apart and put some Butyl Rope around the trim, that'll stop the rattling.

MS3G35 10-25-2011 01:05 PM

No rattling here on the highway. However with the rmm, starting from a stop and idling with the fan/AC on, it will rattle a good bit.

MS309 10-25-2011 05:27 PM

No interior rattles here. Although the bolt was loose on the sway bar end link on the right side which was causing unwanted clunk noises. So those of you with rattles/noises coming from the rear check underneath for anything loose.

I have a drivers front/rear door rattle, if my window is down like 3/4 of the way, it will rattle in the track, and I get a rattle from the hatch area (guessing it's the spoiler).

oh well.

jkmags 10-25-2011 07:09 PM

Ive got the tech package and it sounds like I have a rattle from the speedo cluster and behind the nav. I am guessing some wires like the ones from the gen 1 write up. Maybe the tech package is more prone to rattles..

myslow1 10-25-2011 08:00 PM

No, but something in my hatch just started rattling within the last couple of weeks and it is extremely annoying.

jimmy 10-25-2011 08:22 PM

My hatch rattles now it's a little cooler. I'm pretty sure it's the wing.
I had the map light rattle, but I fixed that by bending that metal bracket.
There is a slight rattle somewhere in the dash ever now and then, but it's so intermittent and quiet I don't really care. I just turn up the Lady Gaga....er I mean Cannibal Corpse.

2011speed 10-26-2011 11:49 AM

yea i think my wing is rattling too. makes me wanna trade her in for a lexus lawl.

cuz my buddies 2001 is300 with about 110 k miles on it has flawless paint, and not one damn rattle.

Ckmazdaspeed3 10-26-2011 12:08 PM

The wing is what is rattling from the rear.

FYI, if something is not rattling on your Mazdaspeed, it is probably broken.

Is there a "fix" for this CK?

Mine is a little rattly (not a word?).

Ckmazdaspeed3 10-26-2011 12:34 PM

I haven't done it yet, but there is a how to for the wing fix somewhere... I would hunt it down if I was on my lap top.

galens47 10-26-2011 12:34 PM

I had this, got a RMM and it went away... go figure.

I used to think about wedging a wee piece of black tape in the gap.

Cheers,
G

Ckmazdaspeed3 10-26-2011 12:39 PM

Be careful if taking the pieces of plastic in the trunk off to get to the wing... I had to do this cuz of a bolt that rattled lose, and I broke a couple of the latches... I figured that they would be as durable as the in cabin fittings, but they are not.

I had a rattle like that in my old mazda 3. I finally broke down and opened up the passenger door panel. To my surprise, someone had put in about 40 pennies and a ring in there. Crazy.

@rfinkle2

Your requested how-to:

2011speed 10-26-2011 02:10 PM

The base of my rear view mirror rattles occasionally after installing my 70 during PMM haha. I adjust the mirror slightly and it goes away.

I have also noticed my window visors rattle at certain RPMs now :(

i got a little rattle in some areas as well, the parts that "snap in" are not always tight and it will rattle there. put a lil tape or something on the places where it snaps in and the rattles should stop
