I just dipped into my MS6 budget for a new RC car. I got sick of waiting on car parts and really just wanted something to build. I decided I wanted 1) at least 1/10 scale, 2) 4WD off-road, and 3) electric... So I got a new RC8Be.

The deets:
RC8Be Factory Team kit
Hitec 7955TG digital titanium gear servo
Mamba Monster speed controller with 2650kV motor
Castle motor cooling fan
1 Venom 14.8V 35C 5000mAh LiPO
1 Venom 11.1V 20C 5000mAh LiPO

I also picked up a Skyline GTR Z-Tune body to custom fit. I want to paint the body black and get some rims that look close to my VOLKS to paint bronze so it will match my car.

Computers - currently running a water cooled i7-2600K OC'd to 4.8ghz; blazes in lightroom, games great and folds proteins like a boss

Photography - stills/event photographer, credited on IMDB; slowly getting into other roles in films and productions

R/C cars - just got back into it with some friends. mainly 1/10 scale countersteer drift cars (zero ackerman, 45+ degree steering lock, front one-way, rear spool, front wheels slower than rear, etc). have a Yokomo MR4-TC but picking up another car next week. Really wish there was an MS3 body but it wouldn't be realistic as a drifter. Gonna be rockin a blacked out Impreza WRX hatch, Impreza sedan, S15 and old Datsun 280ZX. There's a Mazda 6 body but it's fugly as all get out.

Sailing - I crew for a 33' yacht and we race Thursday nights and occasionally weekends

A little gaming on the side but constantly being cut back on by the aforementioned. Some starcraft 2 and some xbox/ps3. I find myself gaming on the iphone or android tablet more often these days in very short bouts.

Longboarding is fun. Too bad skateboarding is illegal in OCMD. Surfing is fun. Hard, but fun. Ive become a fan of body surfing. Just need yourself! And none of the tourist shit, riding the wave straight in on the white water. I'm talking about riding the face.

I have a 7'6" Walden Mini Magic and a No. 6 Bludgeon bodyboard. I'll sell you the Walden and you can get started surfing!

It relates to running Folding@Home software. Your computer gets work units of a snip in time of a protein fold, runs a streamlined GROMACS environment used for molecular dynamics, calculates the results in a matter of hours or days, and then sends the results back to Stanford. You're awarded points based on the complexity and speed at which your computer(s) can fold. Some people own entire server farms or have access to significant idle processing power and dedicate it to folding. Some just have a laptop or their PS3 to fold with. It's a very abstract involvement toward helping to cure various diseases and cancer by donating spare CPU cycles to research. To date, F@H has contributed toward 78 peer reviewed results.

Any decent computer can fold proteins. Mine is overclocked about 40% to fold faster and often times people will use the rate of point gain (referred to as points per day) as a benchmark for system performance, and where minuscule overclocking gains will still add up. My computer can pull 46k PPD. An overclocked dual hexcore Gulftown Xeon server much like what MSF is running off of can do 130-150k PPD. A Core2Duo machine will probably pull around 7-10k PPD.

Haha. I suck at surfing, hence me wanting to sell my board. And you would want me to save your ass if that 10' swell was over your head. Don't generalize, please.

And if you saw my earlier post, you would see what I'm interested in.

I could start throwing out some big words...gluconeogenesis. But would prefer not to.

For what it's worth, my post was meant to be somewhat humor based, as I'm sure many are reading jibberish as I was. Moreover, I'm somewhat interested in what all of that translates to. Hint - I like to learn.

Stanford's site describes it more succinctly than I ever could, but if I were to take a stab in layman's, it might go something like this:

DNA is a sort of like a gigantic custom recipe book. Some of those recipes include how to make proteins. A protein typically starts off as a chain of amino acids, which are the building blocks of proteins, but will fold, bend, twist and stretch into a final shape based on how the individual atoms interact with each other.

This happens very quickly in biological time and to simulate on a computer, requires a tremendous amount of processing power to calculate how one atom amidst hundreds, thousands or millions of atoms moves in three dimensional space over a sequence of time.

The reason for simulating protein folding process is so one may understand how to alter it so the final structure may no longer be functional (potentially in the case of proteins related to diseases), to see the final orientation and understand how it may bind to other molecules, to understand what may cause a specific protein not to fold correctly and then aggregate (such as believed to be the case with Alzheimer's disease), and so on.

I did molecular dynamics simulations (which includes protein folding) for research while getting my degree in biochem back in college. So, some of the vocabulary is still in my mind. It's more challenging to write less and more abstractly for me in these cases.

To simplify what was said previously, Folding@home is a software program that hides all the technicalities of protein folding from you and distills it down to a few numbers. In my case, I use it primarily as a meter for how fast my computer is, and simultaneously a stress test for my water cooling setup.

Try to do as many things as I can: played college football 4 yrs.(U Sioux Falls), snowboard(Burton Custom), mountain bike(Felt Six Elite), supermoto(DRZ400SM), motocross(RMZ250), just started photography, many guns, and try to golf in any other time that's available. Enjoyed seeing what everyone does on their down time!

Super interested in this folding at home stuff now. Gotta see what my new Alienware M11x can handle. i5 520m 8GB RAM 1GB Nvidia video....

Other hobbies, I just sold my street bike so I am looking at something to fill that time, which recently has been spent trying to integrate Win7 and my XBox into a solid home entertainment setup. Others include shooting (I have a few trap shooting awards), video games, and preparing for the zombie apocalypse.

Also, training for Tough Mudder Phoenix which is in January.

R/C's have been huge part of my life for the past 8 years. Mostly build custom crawlers. Since I just got my MS6 guess that also. I also like to weld.

This what I currently own.

FJ40 tuber with 2 speed transmission

Toyota tacoma flatbed

Custom tube out FJ cruiser still working on it.

Hpi sprint drifter

Traxxas slash 4x4

Sailboat

Here some my old competition trucks

I play guitar, piano, and video games (Android games/apps as of late) when I have time. Working those extra OT shifts doesn't leave room for much though, what, between spending time with family and friends.

I fence (epee) and windsurf competitively, play rec softball and flag football, and I ski, and when I've got free time from school and work, I'm an avid GT5-player and was ranked pretty highly in GT Academy for a while, I do woodworking, ceramics, play saxophone, tinker with RC cars (HPI RS4s -- yeah, I know they're old), and I build models and have collected a fair few rare diecast models.

Plane spotting - I've been into aviation since I was a little kid (stems from my family's annual trips to Greece and Switzerland to visit family). It's a hobby that has an enormous following world-wide, but is widely misunderstood by those who don't participate. There are two kinds of spotters: the ones who go to watch planes and collect registrations, and the ones who do plane photography. I'm the latter. TISDIGITAL.com

Wedding Photography - I have a full-time engineering job, but this is my side business, and it's one I've grown to absolutely love. I am in the process of migrating to another company, so this site won't be up for much longer, but TISDIGITAL.com

Tennis - I've been playing tennis since I was 5. I played first singles for my High School team starting in 8th grade, and was on a Division I university's Club Team for 4 years. I now play competitively in the USTA.

Music - I've been playing classical piano since I was 5, and violin since I was 8. I've played for orchestras ever since, and I compose classical music for the piano and for string ensembles (no formal training in composition, so I don't write for winds or percussion).

Nice to see another RC51 on here as well. Do you still have it?

I ride and wrench on my bikes. My Harley is not at all stock, except for the tins and my RC51 has all the fun go-fast mods done to it as well. I can't help it, I can't leave anything alone. I'd love to get a BMW S1000RR or a Ducati 1198 but I can't justify another bike and love the 2 that I have.

I also play video games whenever time permits but with motorcycling, hockey and golf, my video game time is quite limited. Add to that a 6 and a 4 year old and time is at a premium.

Lots of different activities in this thread but it seems many people, moutain bike and work on RC cars.

For me it's a few things.

Football => play it, study it, live it. Lettered in High School, Played in University, played semi-pro for a few years (after a unscheduled hiatus that basically cost me a shot at the pros) and now play in three Men's touch leagues over the course of a year. I'm hoping to quit my current day gig and move into coaching it as a profession, just need a good lead in......

Weight lifting => as a natural compliment to the football, not currently dooing it, but did it extensively for 15 years. At my peak I benched over 330 pounds (3 - 45lbs plates per side for you visualizers), squated close to 500lbs had a 26" vertical. I also ran a 4.4 40 time.

Modding other cars => The Speed is actually my 7th modded car, I've had a small isuzu sedan, 2 Civics, 2 Integras and an SUV. Yes I was a Honda driver..... get over it.

Finally my passion and the most costly hobby I've ever had. I'm a huge ORIGINAL G1 Transformers fan, so I've speant the better part of the last 6 years collecting every single figure from the original collection in as many of their variations, limited editions and hard to find issuances as possible. I have every character (over 375) up until the show ended in 1987 in the US and even have all of the figures that were issued into the Japanese continuation of that year. Beyond that they are too hard (expensive) to find complete.

My collection is boxed right now as I'm working on building a display cabinet for them all, but I found these pics to give you perspective on what it would look like. These pics are about a thrid of each collection.

Autobots (Cybertrons)

Decepticons (Destrons)

here's a sample. when i'm not recording my own stuff, i like to record covers:

Sir, that was awesome. Thoroughly enjoyed that. Plus you are semi local. Never noticed before.

i have a soccer summer league i compete in with some buddies from my HS soccer team.

skiing, which is my most favorite hobby by far. been doing it since i was 5, and i get in a good 50 days a year...which is impressive for SW PAs like 120 days of winter lol.

i've been on and off with golfing for 3 years now. i'm not great, but can shoot high 80's on a good day and it's a ton of fun just chilling with the guys, drinking beers and shootin the shit. don't have enough free time for it but i'd love to be able to make more...sucks that it's pretty expensive though lol

fishing/hunting. did a lot more of it when i was younger with my dad, i've grown to like fly fishing more than hunting now though. still love going out with my dad to our holes and rippin trout out of the stream, plus it's a great time for us to chill and spend time together. or there's always camping out with my buddies and more of getting drunk than fishing is fun too lol. can't do much hunting anymore....wake up early, sit all day, be cold, be bored etc. just doesn't appeal to me much these days. i do still enjoy shooting my bow, however.

smoking fake buds. self explanatory, fuck my life and career for drug testing me and killing me who knows how many years earlier from this shit...

partying is also a hobby of mine if you can call it that...at least 3 times a week i will go out and have a good time with friends...get drunk and have some awesome times and a lot of stories to tell next day (gotta piece the craziness that took place previously together lol)

I'm officially quitting all my expensive hobbies and saving for a new car... which I could buy right now if I hadn't blown so much money on hobbies last year.
