Anyone ever overheated?

I'm wondering what happens when the car overheats. Is there a warning light, or does the car have some sort of a safety kill switch to prevent damage? I'm still scratching my head as to why they didn't bother to include a gauge with this generation.

@faeker; has overheated

There's a red idiot light that turns on similar to the blue "cold" light in 2012+ models. I still monitor coolant temp with my AP because I don't trust that light to turn on in time to tell me that something's wrong.

As for why there's no temp gauge, well, you could ask that about a lot of gauges that have disappeared since the old days like oil pressure.

by the time that light comes on, it's probably too late. I watch my coolant temps on my AP now. $3500 lesson learned.

I over heated once, and my car told me by cutting off the AC and I looked and saw my temps for almost pegged on the dash so I pulled over and put water in temps dropped right back down and I kept going.

I also noticed once when I got really low on gas the car also turned off the AC, and I have found it to be an effective warning mechanism when your ac quits blowing cold shit is going down.

my idiot light never came on, I just noticed the AC cut out and then looked at my gauges and noticed the temp. i have had recurring issues of coolant loss with a head gasket issue I have since fixed and I no longer lose coolant.

FWIW I has Gen 1

Thanks for the replies. I was wondering if I could put off getting something to monitor the temp, but I'm thinking I might just get an ultragauge till I need an AP.

You could also get the Torque app and a bluetooth OBD2 adapter.

What is making you worry so much about the car overheating? Issues/problems with the cooling system?

spaceape48 10-09-2015 10:13 AM

My sometimes absent mindedness to check fluid levels mostly. Also plan on having this till high miles so want to be sure it is taken care of.

I like the torque app, but I use my phone while I drive, so having the extra screen is a must.

Better safe than sorry. There are a few threads on how to check and flush the coolant system, give that bad boy a once over now that you have it on your mind. Good luck.

Speed 6 did.. Found out the sensor was faulty even though no code was thrown.. replaced it and it never showed hot temp again.. I was like theres no way its hot. I got out felt the radiator/motor/etc.. It just didn't feel like the gauge was saying. Turned out to be a bad sensor
