Anyone sell their speed and wish they had not?

So I'm looking for opinion from people who not longer have their speed3 or speed 6. I have been thinking about maybe trading in my 2011 ms3 for something newer. Maybe a gti, focus st or rs, mustang gt350r, or terminator. Basically I was thinking about getting something different but not sure if I end up getting rid of the speed if I'll be as happy with something else.

Djohns 02-11-2017 05:35 AM

I can tell you right now without a doubt you would not be as happy with a st or a failwagon.

Why would he not be as happy with an ST? It's basically the same car, better interior, better engine, better fueling, more options for the market going forward, etc...

I was seriously looking into it, until my motor went.

Obviously a modded MS3 and a stock ST won't compare, but that's stating the obvious.

Because it's basically the same car but a lot slower. I will agree the interiors are nice but when I drove my friends it was obvious to me I would not be happy going from my speed to that thing.

Is your friends car modded and tuned like yours is? If not, the comparison isn't valid.

It's modded and tuned yes. It's a full bolt on tuned car, just no meth like mine.

Don 02-11-2017 05:58 AM

Obviously you really want the ST .. just go get it

hamfisted 02-11-2017 08:57 AM

I'd happily trade my speed for a Mystichrome termi Cobra.

I have been wanting a terminator for years, something that has been modified. 500 to 700 hp range. The thing is they are so heavy.

What about gti mk7, look like those take a tune and few mods very well?

See personally I've never liked failwagons. I've never owned one but 4 of my friends did and of those 4, 3 of them always had issues with them and they were super expensive to fix.

sharksinspace 02-11-2017 02:17 PM

Regarding MK7, from Freek's fb:
https://m.facebook.com/1640479596179...466223/?type=3

downs 02-11-2017 02:18 PM

I'm going to show my noobness and say I don't know what a failwagon is. But when I found the MS3 I was seriously looking at newer used Foci hatchbacks. Both standard models and STs. One of my buddies is a tech at a Ford Dealership and he said they constantly get newer Focus STs in for warranty issues. He would rather buy a previous gen Focus over the newer ones he says, for what it's worth anyway.

sharksinspace 02-11-2017 02:19 PM

failwagon=Volkswagen

You shut your whore mouth! The focus ST is a POS! Yes we have some of the same parts...But everything about the Mazda except the IM is better! The interior on the focus feels cheap and shitty, they're a pain to work on, also it's a Ford so you can burn in. My buddy had a fully bolted ST and customs tuned, Everytime he got in my car he asked if we could trade, he had me off the line and I could take him once I hit 3rd. I did not enjoy being in that focus at all, interior if very tight, so if you're larger than those little hipsters than don't eat anything or you're tall good luck (I'm 6'5" 247lbs). Personally nothing appeals to me about that car, shit even the shifter felt cheap like I was going to break it. I can't speak to the RS as I have not been in one.

As for a golf R, they're gorgeous, I thoroughly enjoyed being in it however I don't know if it's enough that I'd give up my ms3 for one.

MS3Shadow 02-11-2017 02:26 PM

The ST is not that much fun and slow since it has an K03 turbo, it's only an 2.0L, so it's not the same engine. And horrible turning radius, as big as an SUV.

It's has more aftermarket options since its new and an ford.

Honestly it all depends what you want to do with the car or your driving habit. I have owned my gen1 ms3 since new practically and love it to death, still runs great. But a good friend of mine has a mk6 GTI and I have driven that car on many occasions.

I can say that the fit and finish and just everyday driving, the GTI is way more comfortable and pleasant to be in. Nothing rattles, creeks, and the ride is very soft. But when it comes to the aftermarket aspect, that's a different story, you have to spend a lot of money to make those cars comparable with a ms3. Even though majority of VW owners dont really care about performance, just bags and wheels.

MS3 is way more raw and driver orientated in my honest opinion, VW GTI is built for the everyday person that just wants to have a fun commuter car.

I love the fact i can throw my speed into any corner and just stick it. What i hate is the lack of traction in 1st,2nd,and 3rd. and it can't get it to get off the line, but love how it pulls in 2nd 3rd and 4th.

Also i'm getting older now, and the genpu are getting picked up by high school kids now, and it has lost its cool fun factor too with me(like a modded civic).

One of the best things about the speed was it was a great value, in terms of fun and speed per dollar.

Any "hot hatch" will be owned by juveniles with stupid intentions. That should not be your deciding factory in what car YOU drive on a daily basis. Have you been to a VW meet? As grown up as the GTI is, majority of the people that own them are idiots who think air ride and rotiform wheels is life.

If you have problems with traction, maybe look into better tires, motor mounts and suspension. The MS3 is a great great car, I have a gen1 and it pains me thinking that one day it will have to go. If you love the car, than keep it and enjoy, dont worry what kids do to it.

Power Mods: auto tech internals, Cobb sri, and tip, Cobb DP, ETS TMIC, Rich Tune on 93.

Suspension Mods: Koni yellows with cobb springs, jbr rsw, pilot super sports 245/45/r17 on RPF1s, whiteline bumb steer kit, Damond RMM,TMM,PMM.... soon to have whiteline castor correct.

Still don't hook up all that well(still wheel hop and spin, i'm investigating... maybe bad koni, or bushing are shot at 48K miles?). Got good lateral grip.

I know i can get sticker rubber and maybe wider, but for the summer driving i do in central ny, the PSS are pretty good

I love my PSS but I can spin 3rd decently if I don't warm them up first even if ambient temps are warm. Once they are warm I don't tend to spin 3rd

Or you know. Use the throttle like a rheostat instead of an on-off switch.

Maybe my throttle control isn't that great, but the fact I can spin the tires doing 50 MPH just seems pointless amount of HP and TQ for the car(which is't that much for today's standards). Maybe I can "learn " to drive it different, but I want to be able to put more power down. I believe that requires a different car( which I maybe very wrong).

I'm just wondering if I let my MS3 go, I'll be wishing I didn't. I see reviews on the GTi and see how it is able to really take corners very well, and put power down to the front tires. Same for the new Civic R, maybe @manu was correct in suggesting a different LSD.

Ford Focus frequency of repair data is horrible. It give new meaning to the FORD acronym, Fix Or Repair Daily. No thanks.

Had my cousin in 2011 with his vw gti huge problems on the" taking off "but they may have changed that in late models and i remember he d have to spend like 800$ for a tune to get 50hp (bhp)i guess and that would be just stage 1 or 2 nothing that crazy and everything in general did cost more for him to do to his gti in comparison to ms3 ..then he lost it ,payments too high for him at the time ,now he savings to get a focus RS ,i guess its a better option vs the R been for him as an AWD car to i guess eliminate the traction issues .
Idk ..in my opinion both cars are great and they have all different characters and style i think thats the cool part

Sent from my SM-G900P using Tapatalk

And i wished they would have made more speed 6 or of course AWD speed3..yeah and the cost would be higher too..but thats ok:) i d only trade my ms3 for awd ms3

I too had an '87.5 Turbo II RX-7 back in high school (that was like 18 years ago - holy hell I'm getting old). I had to part with it because I couldn't afford the upkeep on a part-time income working mall jobs (Zumiez, Suncoast, etc). I did love it dearly and wish I still had it.

I feel like I'd be the same if I got rid of my MS3. It's the first car I've ever put some real money and mods into. I've had her for going on 4 or maybe 5 years this June. I still find myself looking back at her every time I park her. I'm hoping to finally go BT this year and then she'll be even more powerful and fun to drive. But I guess it all depends on what you like.

I just saw an RS in the wild for the first time last night on the freeway in Sacramento. They look cool and have some great features and power, but I too think the interior looks cheap and just like the lower model Focuses (Foci?) 😅

I also feel that there's still a pretty solid aftermarket community for the Speed3 and it's potential is still being tapped into, but at the end of the day it's really all up to you and your personal preference.

Whatever you decide to do I wish you the best, bro.

I sold my 2008 speed3 at the end of 2015 and purchased a 2011 Tacoma 4 door 4x4 6 speed manual. I loved that car and put a lot of sweat and blood into it. I do miss it but I wanted/needed a 4x4.

Things I miss most would be: POWER, MPG's, and the look on Dodge R/T drivers' faces when you walk em by school bus lengths.

My brother sold his Speed 6 and bought a Fiesta RS. He loves it and I got to drive it several times. Great handling car and nice interior. Could use 50 more hp though. I believe he gets 30-32 mpg highway.

You have to understand that you drive a front wheel drive car and it will spin tires if you dump the clutch in 1st and 2nd or even 3rd with your current mods. And that will happen with any fwd car with similar power.

I am not doubting your driving skills but modulate the throttle and be happy with what you have. If you want to spend 50-60k+ (I know they are marked up) on a 350r mustang than go ahead by all means but that's another league of car compared to a ms3.

I can spin tires on my 6 around corners if I flat foot the accelerator (with NT-05's twice as sticky as your PSS about), but whats your point. That can be done on just about any car regardless of platform with big power (hence the throttle control statement).

BTW He was totally correct about the throttle control statement, doesn't matter what car you're in until you get that down. A slow person will be slow in any car, a fast person will be fast in any car, the driver holds back the majority of the potential of the vehicle.

If you don't want to spin tires, don't go FWD since you don't seem willing to "learn to drive different"-- go ride a motorcycle and throttle control will have an all new meaning, you'll probably stop spinning tires in your car too :P

I can speak on this. My pu was my dream car. I loved the shit out of her. Then came the desire for more hp. In comes a '14 mustang gt. Fantastic and fun. Not as much fun to mod, but omg she sounded nice. Life and priorities moved on and I've gone to the dark side.

Of the 2 sports cars I've had and modded I miss my speed way more than the mustang. I've even attempted to stalk her online...

Who knows what the future holds. I'm leaning towards a unimog now... I moved to PNW and it makes more sense. I will always cherish my time with the speed and this community. I love the comeraderie(fuck spelling) on the Nators!

My three cents.

Cheers,

G

I am in the same boat as you....had the car 4 years....almost all 4 years bolted e85 Freektuned. Have 83k miles now and really don't want to spend money on shit that will start to break and will need to be maintained. I've had zero problems with the car. lol at ppl saying you need to learn to drive a fwd car. Bolted e85 and zero fucking traction in 1-2 and spinning 3rd....useless power. I don't get why ppl go bt when 1-3 gears are useless. Love the car but want usable power. Looking into evo x....you can get a close to new car for high 20s.

You can keep the s4 I just want the manifolds! But yeah I understand needing the time to be able to do what can be a tricky install

Maybe I'll just end up holding on to it for a while longer. I can have a second money pit for a while( I think).

I originally had my MS3 as a daily( winter and summer) then I started modding more and more, and lowered a little. I soon just left the car as a summer daily. I do miss driving it as we speak( nothing will replace having a manual gear box).

Yeah I'll never get a death trap (motorcycle), although great insight, you are probably right I wouldn't really "learn to drive different" (unless i'm forced too). I have been wanting go to Watkins Glen for sometime now, maybe this is the year I do. Take some advice from guys that race there( my co-worker is an instructor), learn to go fast lol.

Haha, I have a motorcycle, cheap, fast, badass and chicks love it - it's only kind of a deathtrap, gonna die some day. Local track is the way to do it, you'll learn a lot in a day or two.

But I'll never sell my speed, with all that I've put into it, it's almost paid off, and it still has relatively low miles (52k), by the time id be ready for a new car the resale value would be so low I'll just keep it. Plus it's my first car that I've modded myself. Bought her when I was 18 and haven't looked back the past 3 years.

I sold mine for a truck (2015 Toyota Tacoma) six months later I sold the truck and bought another speed3. Based on what you are talking about it may be a good idea if you get something else that is just as fun. Personally if the dealers around here didn't want $40k for an RS I would love to get into one of those. I guess I will have to wait a few years and see if they come down in price at all.

I don't know if it's just me but it's incredibly hard for me to believe that you're spinning tires at 50mph with your current wheel/tire setup. And with your power mods
