That is an option too I guess but you are right OEM cats are like gold, I personally would not cut up a perfectly good OEM downpipe for the cats. An aftermarket high flow cat I like $100 with 3" inlet/outlet and should get you through the smog test especially if you only put it back in or a short time when needed for smog.

Buy high flow cat for $80/ea. Save expensive OEM cats for later. Pass emissions standards while not killing performance. Done.

Okay, but you wouldn't pass visual. A downpipe with some shiny new cats with V-bands would definitely look like it was "Tampered" with.

I'm thinking of keeping my OEM downpipe, and only change the test pipe and maybe the catback. For two year cycle, that seems like the best/easiest way to go.

Yes, this is all under the assumption you can get around the visual but need a functional cat to ensure you don't have any codes that will cause you to fail the diagnostic portion of the test. Running catless on the street is inviting huge fines and headaches anyway but the chance of getting caught are relatively low.

Plus heatshields over the high flow cats should eliminate the chance of failing a visual. Id just need to check to see how the stock shields would bolt up over an aftermarket cat. Given that the diameter (of mine) is =/< the stock units, I don't see it being an issue... at least for the lower cat. Kinda wish I had thought of that before I did my DP install...

Yes, any manufacturer that could built a nice 3" downpipe that mounted the stock heat-shields over the pipe and/or aftermarket high flow cat would have huge marketshare in California.

Disabling CELs for certain things will cause the readiness codes to read not ready, which means you will not pass. You're crazy if you think a catless downpipe has a chance of passing.

Well the funny thing is that the Stock Heatshield fits over the 02 sensor of the UR downpipe (it is a little off but I highly doubt any "Smog Expert" would notice). If you run that in conjunction with a gutted mid pipe, I am fairly certain that you could pass the visual.

UR doesn't make a downpipe for the MS6.

Simple solution, move. But seriously just find a shop that will do it. My buddy just got his truck smogged with a turndown, throttle body spacer and a CAI without any E.O. Numbers for 25 bucks extra. All he did was tell the guy he had it in there and he didn't give a fuck. This shop is in San Clemente off pico.

Shit on a goddamn dick. I have a CP-e catted dp sitting in my living room that I want to get installed with my HKS cbe. After reading all this debby-downer shit about smog malarkey I guess I'll think twice before I move to CA in March and go with a race pipe w/ stock dp to keep safe. Then again I want to install the bitch to please my right foot and my impulsive sense of not wanting to snail around anymore...

Unless someone were to magically buy it off me immediately if it were to appear in the FS section...

Exhaust Works

This is a one man operation though - a tiny shop. He has a very good reputation (deserved) in the area and is very reasonable. However, the downside is that he is always flooded with work and getting your car seen requires setting up an appointment well in advanced.

Since I got my race ramps I've done all my exhaust work myself (hell, almost all my work myself)... I'm impatient and actually enjoy tinkering with my car.

They're "private", but not really at all. Let's just say big brother is watching them through a microscope

Good thing that microscope isnt on the end of a stick where they can look under your car for rear axles.

So I finally bit the bullet and had the factory dp/cat reinstalled. Noticed that my CEL is still on. Is there something I have to do to clear it or will it go off on its own after driving for a while?

unhook your battery for 10 minutes unless you have an AP. If you do just clear the code directly from the unit.

Part of CA smog laws require the cat's be installed within 3-5" of OEM placement and aftermarket ones need to meet or exceed OEM specs

All of this is why I'm not going to change my DP and have a CARB sticker on my intake. Hopefully they don't realize the TIP isn't part of the intake. I'm wondering what they will have to say about an oil catch can.

The Corksport Stage 2 system includes the TIP and the intake and is CARB legal.

Sent via oil leak.
