Car won't start after TIP install

Ok where to begin.

When I first started the install I accidentally arced the + and - battery wires. The wrench fell out of my hands and of course landed perfectly in the middle.

I didn't think anything of it and when I finished I checked everything made sure everything was plugged it and attempted to start my car. The car got power but no crank at all. I can hear it ticking when I turn the key but there is no crank. I tried to jump it with no success.

Also the security light indicator is blinking very fast on my dash board. The manual says that means there is a malfunction and to contact mazda. I called them and they said it could be a problem with the vehicles immobilizer. Also I talked to my neighbor who is a mechanic and he said its possible the arc could of blew the ecu. Is that possible?

Also I cannot get my AP to connect to the car either.

TylerCS 10-22-2012 05:37 PM

I'd check the fuses. If you did, that would be a hell of a lot cheaper than frying the ECU... good luck!

PPD369Speed3 10-22-2012 05:37 PM

I am not 100% which fuse to check.

btstarcher 10-22-2012 05:40 PM

All of them? I'd also get the battery checked out, just to be safe; they're not designed to be connected to no load...

PPD369Speed3 10-22-2012 07:57 PM

so i just went 100% stock and the car magically started to crank but it still didn't start. I was actually able to get my AP uninstalled.

When roadside assistance showed up they said the anti theft is activated and the car thinks its trying to be stolen. Thats what he thinks its wrong. So the dealership is going to be looking at it tomorrow.

cbspd3flip 10-22-2012 08:22 PM

I'm sorry but this made me lol.

Good luck hopefully they figure it out.

PPD369Speed3 10-22-2012 08:34 PM

Lol my luck is horrible when it comes to installs. But hopefully its covered under warranty

@PPD369Speed3

Get involved in your local Nator chapter bro, lots of knowledge there and it keeps the fail at bay!

i'm thinking something got tripped due to the short circuit

hope everything works out and you get to tell us wtf this was all about

dantes5823 10-22-2012 09:41 PM

lol sounds like my dumbass a few days ago. Of course at this point its too late to suggest anything so gl.

Op, to avoid similar fail in the future, always be sure to disconnect the neg terminal first when removing the battery and connect the pos terminal first when reinstalling. Also, the battery should be the first thing out and the last thing in during installs that expose it.

skeeter149 10-22-2012 10:16 PM

and please make sure your clamps by the ecu harness will in no way make contact where the intake meets the tip

I was in the process of doing that. But I dropped the wrench and it fell right in the middle of the two. Thats how lucky I am.

Maybe we should start a business of making tools for noobs, with a safety strap. Kind of like a Wii remote.

We could also coat the tools in foam in case they drop one on their head.

You blew the main fuse, it is a 100 amp motherfucker or some shit. IT is a big one. It is in the fuse box near the air intake. You probably popped a few accessory fuses inside too.

jdmage_mx5 10-23-2012 06:56 AM

^^^^ I am thinking it is one of the big fuses. Maybe check the relays also.

I may be a noob on this website but im definitely not a noob when it comes to working on cars. You telling me you never once dropped something in your life. My luck is that when I dropped the tool it fell in the perfect spot to arc the battery.

Also the only place that has that main fuse is the dealership the stores I went to said they dont stock them. The dealership thinks its something to do with the anti theft. But ill be finding out definitely soon.

I had a battery connected wrong on my P5 (long story) and it was the main fuse. Go to the dealer, pick up a fuse, and swap it.

Oh I drop shit all the time, thus the reason for my idea. I've worked on Tractors (farm boy) and cars my entire life and I am guaranteed to lose a bolt or a socket everytime.

Your story was funny, and I thought I'd share my stupid idea, which was really meant to be more rhetorical.

Well the dealer couldnt tell me what was wrong BC the battery was unplugged clearly the ecu. The reason the car wasnt starting was BC my fuel pump wasnt getting any pressure. So they changed that fuse and they got it started.

Everything was covered under warranty. Thank God lol.

So any mod can close this thread.

Hopefully you can get it fixed. Also if you can you should try to make dumps install day to meet some new people.

Buy better tools? Seriously though, I got lucky enough to inherit electricians tools from my dad that are insulated enough to protect against SNAFUs like this. Saved me once or twice from a mild zap. Best time was when cutting off a bad receptacle wire that checked dead on the DMM but arced when I cut into it.

fortressofcomfort 10-23-2012 05:25 PM

So you only blew the fuel pump fuse? I'd imagine others are popped as well. Let us know if you see other issues. You could, like someone said, check them all to be sure.

It was all covered under warranty. The mechanic did not find anything else and the car is running perfectly.

It actually turns out that my dad who was doing the install with me was checking the fuses after I arced the battery to see if anything blew and he put the wrong one in the fuel pump slot.

So I have no idea what happened originally BC I had my battery off and it reset the ecu and that also reset the anti theft so the car was able to crank. But since my dad fucked up the fuses we still thought something was screwed up. It actually turns out my dad put 3 other fuses in the wrong spot too!! The fuse for the locks and my radio. That is why that shit wasnt working either.

So the dealer assumes that this arc caused the car to think it was being stolen and the anti theft was activated and when I unplugged my battery to go stock it reset the ecu and this allowed the car to crank. But since the fuses were fucked up it wasnt actually starting.

Im still curious though is if the arc really caused the ecu to think it was being stolen.

I recommend drinking during installs - that way you have something else to blame.

That's what I do.

I always place a condom on the positive post.... Haven't been grounded since
