I took mine to the stealership at around 30k miles. They did it for free and got a carwash. :) |

I checked mine Friday and holy crap, it was amazingly loose. Glad I checked. Tapatalk has stopped responding... |

I did some research and found the guy in Hiroshima responsible for bolting up the spoilers. This was at lunch... http://i.imgur.com/tSGy1xq.png |
so I purchased a cosmic (or what the hell ever) blue wing assembly off of e-bay, 200 complete beats the hell out of 750 new... as mine car is CWP, I am thinking blue and white is a no go, but plasti-dip black would look pretty good I think; adhesion is a concern, will the plasti-dip primer stick to the finish (I will use a solvent on it for wax first) or should sand it? I searched, but I failed. |

I've sprayed it on dirty road grime covered wheels with good results. Lots of light coats is the key. The more coats the better the finish and it makes for much easier removal. |

I considered the 3 rattle can CWP on Amazon, but haven’t seen any real reviews on it. |

But cwp is a two-step. You have you color that goes on first, then the pearl, then the clear. All in one sounds like bs |

These guys are significantly cheaper: Touch Up Paint and Accessories | AutomotiveTouchup I've bought paint from them before and was happy with the match. @MBalik; These paint kits take into account that the paint is tricoat. The three cans included in the kit that Yatta mentioned are base/mid/clear. |
Ah alright then I stand corrected, [emoji14] |
How r u guys removing the gromets from inside the trunk lid? I'm anal and don't want to damage them or the paint on the hatch [emoji14] |
I used my fingernail. Even that was enough to damage one of them to the point where it fell off. Stupid thing. Now I need to order another one. Tapatalk has stopped responding... |
I did this repair over the weekend with a ‘blue’ spoiler assembly purchased off of ebay, dis-assembled it completely, cleaned it with alcohol, dipped with many little coats and while it was drying set to work on the hatch, of the nuts, two appear to have never made it on (or in ) the car (the two on the passenger side) the first one on the driver was still attached (with a part of the wing) and the last was loose inside... when the spoiler flew off it scraped one hole, turned one into a ‘bump’ and for the part with the spoiler still attached it make it volcano shape... I had to flatten, primer and paint these before putting the dipped spoiler back on. a brass drift to start and a pair of washers/bolt/nut tighten to bring them flat. Rather than loc-tite I added a second (M6x1.0 I believe) to each of the 4 nuts, after they were tightened down, this should allow an easy removal but still keep things secure. cross link to spoiler color thread... http://www.mazdaspeedforums.org/foru...0/#post2843918 |
3 Attachment(s) Funny thing about bolts and spoilers that... I checked this thread this morning and sometime between yesterday afternoon and last night, a bolt decided to make itself a bed in my rear bumper. I'm reasonably ticked, but it's something I'm going to have to deal with... God damnit I just got this thing, and it was damn near immaculate. Guess now starts the long story that is my MS3. Funnily enough, the center nut had fallen off and fell in between the plastic panel and the protective strip so I got lucky and it didn't fall down into the negative space of the rear hatch. still really kind of irked that I damaged the car though. I like to take care of my things. |
Touch it up and u wont known it's there |
I finally got around to tightening my shit today I used a spudge tool so i wouldnt scratch anything Was really careful but i still put some nicks into the gromets, whatever In any case, one nut was a quarter turn loose, the other half a turn loose... I'll be checking this a few times a year Spudge tool: |
Fuck. Just checked mine, one of mine is missing. That would explain the rattling noise every time I open the hatch. Fuck me. |
So is locktight recommended or not? |
1 Attachment(s) |
Just checked mine. I was able to get a full turn on both sides with ease. The middle ones seemed fine, but my socket wasn't deep enough to tighten those. |
Over torqueing your wing will make It loose just FYI guys :) |
Whoa. Happy I saw this thread. I'm checking this TODAY! |
2 Attachment(s) Saw the thread, checked yesterday. Nut fell into the trunk space. Screws on the outside were tight. Cleaned all the gunk underneath. Definitely got rid of a rattle but still want to secure the wing better. What does one recommend to reseal the wing? The OEM stuff is rather pathetic and allowed way too much movement, fucking up the paint. |
Just add more foam |
Thanks to this thread, I was able to immediately diagnose the rattle I was hearing. Two of the four needed tightening. |
I just checked mine again.. Its tight as heck then again. Then again I just hit 17,000 miles and mines a 2012 :) |
Mine was completely missing the left outside nut, nowhere to be found. Right one was loose. I replaced those and used loctite. I'll check the other bolts tonight as I didn't realize there were more...I hope those are loose because it's still rather floppy! |
Mine rattled like a snake everytime I shut the trunk. My friend with a WRX ragged on me for it so I fixed it. Right nut fell off and was going bananas on the inside... CHECK IT BEFORE IT WRECKS ITSELF.:wtf1: |
Good call. I noticed my spoiler was getting loose but I was like fuck it I'll deal with it later. Glad I checked because the right 10mm was about to fall off. Took less than 5 minutes to fix. Thanks. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |
Thanks for this thread. I was occasionally hearing some sort of squeaking that sounded like it was coming from the back seats. Remembered this thread and checked the spoiler yesterday. Sure enough, driver side was loose. Yanked off center trim and nut fell out. Other two were tight. Did not have Nylock nuts the right size, so undid all four and re-tightened after some blue locktite. Took all of 10 minutes. Thanks OP. |
Fuck me. I just saw this thread today. Been hearing a *sliiiide* *TWAK* for about two weeks now on the passenger side of the hatch. I can hear it catch on the taillight. |
I checked mine 2 years ago because it was making some noise. I tightened everything, but thought I had 4 bolts for some reason. |
3 Attachment(s) This thread saved me a potential headache. I saw it a while back and figured, "I'll check my spoiler sooner or later." Well, I noticed a few months ago that the spoiler seemed extra floppy when closing the hatch. I decided to take a look and I'm glad I did. The two outer nuts weren't too bad, but I was still able to tighten them a few turns with minimal effort on the ratchet. When I checked the two inner I realized I had lucked out. They were both completely off the studs and had, fortunately, gotten trapped under the plastic cover instead of falling into the inside of the hatch. I ended up putting a little blue Loctite on the two that had fallen off. Thanks for the heads-up! Maybe this should be stickied? Just trying to save folks the headache of having a nut rattling around in their hatch, or worse yet, losing a spoiler while driving. Thanks again, and check your nuts! haha Attachment 223652Attachment 223653 Attachment 223654 |
Shit, I thought it was stickied (not that anyone reads those lol). |
So glad I read this thread. I was down in South Carolina for vacation this past week (I'm from Upstate NY) and heard consistent rattling from the rear of my car. Checked my wing based on reading this thread a few weeks back, it was loosey goosey. Only 2 of 4 nuts were even on, and one of the remaining two was halfway off. Glad I checked... she's tight now! |

nice one! i just checked mine and 2 were loose and one was missing! i cant hear it rattling around so maybe its either jammed somewhere or the previous owner got it and never replaced it? all are tightened and no more floppy wing. |
just about the same story for me! i saw this thread about two weeks ago and figured if i hear something i will check, then i kept seeing more and more people commenting on here. so i decided to check it today and two inner nuts were no where to be found! outside two were still nice and tight, maybe a 1/4 turn on each. Thanks to whoever made this a sticky! |
Thanks for stickying this thread. I just put Loctite on both mine and my wife's 3's. By the way, if anyone is curious, this fix goes for all the trim levels. My wife's base model hatch had the same issue and my speed. |
Thanks for this. All 4 still on, all 4 loose, almost full turn. |
It's amazing that this is so common. lol |
Checked my bolts last week, 3 were loose... |
I constantly wiggle my spoiler now as i walk by the car to check. Put some locktite on them and no problems recently but i'm still paranoid. A couple years ago I could hear the damn thing popping up and down on bumps and discovered this problem myself. |
Quote:
I tried to replace the left side not sober and dropped 2 nuts and 1 washer into the hatch before getting a nut on. They rattled around but now they've found their home deep inside the hatch lol  |
Awesome, thanks for the tip. Bought this 2010 off the lot. We'll see how she holds up. Second owner and all... |

@distortion - Don't worry, sticking to my guns. I have been babying this car since I purchased it. :drive: |
Seems like the previous owner knew about this problem. All the nuts were tight. Never hurts to double check! |
I was wondering what that noise was when I open and close the hatch from time to time. Well, at least the others are on there, somewhat. Thanks for the thread and sticky lol |
