Considering an upgrade :/

So I've been in love with the evo X for a long time (or however long they've been around). The speed3 has made me more than happy though, and it will be a tough decision either way to sell the car. I'll have it paid off this summer and I'm considering trading it in for a brand new 2012 GSR.

Its great that the mazda has held value very well, and I know that the Evo will hold its value better than almost any car. AWD in NE will be amazing in the winter too..

What do? What are your opinions on the evo, any major concerns I may not have read about?

If I do sell / trade in the speed- whoever ends up with it will have a very well cared for vehicle!

Mortose 05-08-2012 03:06 PM

Keep the speed, and buy evo.

This but get an evo 9.

TriO 05-08-2012 03:11 PM

Love the evo but for the price the interior of those things is shit.

i don't think it would be that much more fun than a speed to DD

I vote keep speed

Constantin 05-08-2012 03:17 PM

Why not WRX STI? I'm no expert, but from talking to people it seems like Subaru is a much better car. They say EVO 10 is worse then EVO 9 or earlier...

Plus, no hatchback = less space for stuff.

fortressofcomfort 05-08-2012 03:20 PM

4G63 is legend. I like the Evo 9 idea. But can you find one unmolestered?

breakfstincluded 05-08-2012 03:26 PM

i would like wrx/sti a lot more if they weren't fucking everywhere here

there's more of those than gti and si's put together in the NW

ckMS3 05-08-2012 03:34 PM

Sti's are great cars, but everyone has one, there overrated and overpriced. Get an Evo and watch all the subies quiver when they see you coming.

Mortose 05-08-2012 03:41 PM

come up to the springs, all you ever see are damn subies and evo's! you can't swing a dead cat without hitting 5 WRX's.

DownSideFX 05-08-2012 03:41 PM

Yeah I've never been a fan of Subaru's and I like the look of the Evo way more. I see at least 1-2 STIs or WRXs on my way to work each day, and 1 Evo prob every 2 weeks.

I'm going to avoid pre-owned, they are certainly a car that gets beaten, unless a deal popped up and it was clear the car had been babied. Appreciate the input so far!

bertrand_CX_7 05-08-2012 03:53 PM

+1 for STI being over priced.

Now one thing to keep in mind is that the evo is pricy to maintain than the speed3, I mean if you race/track it.

We know one guy around here who had an evo and ended up keeping it but getting a Miata for track days since it was a lot cheaper to maintain than the EVO, AGAIN when you race it ....

something to think keep in mind.......

helmetface 05-08-2012 03:55 PM

I hate subaru..

Just saying.

I'm not bashing you for upgrading, but it illustrates an approach to buying cars that I've never quite understood: "OMG I finally paid off the thousands of dollars in interest I owed for my car! I'm debt-free on cars! It's mine! It's all mine!! Now I'll go out and take another loan out and go into debt! Yay!!"

Nope, that's perfectly valid. There's a good chance I might hold off a while just to rejoice in no car payments. My problem is I haven't been able to settle on a long term car (>5-7 years). The evo is a contender for that.

Thousands of dollars in interest!? I would hope not!

fortressofcomfort 05-08-2012 04:03 PM

Because racecar in blood.

ThizSpeed3 05-08-2012 04:26 PM

get a evo, than buy new clutch for it

Wait wait wait ... no consumer debt? Do you want America's economy to fail?

Just what I was thinking. But U.S.A= Consumer Debt

CaptObvious75 05-08-2012 05:16 PM

I don't think many people on here are a model of wise consumer spending considering the mod list in everyone's sig lol

back on topic, get the Evo. Its literally bullet proof except the weak clutch and will take 765276 times the mods without throwing a rod at you.

it's also non- direct injection, which means clean valves forever!! Just make sure one of your priorities is NOT fuel economy, cause you will be disappointed. Make sure you are aware of the costs of fluid changes for the rear diff, active center diff, active yaw control system and transmission. Every 30k miles won't be cheap!

I think that's pretty much it (was planning on buying one before I got the speed3)

2011speed 05-08-2012 05:20 PM

evo x isn't too much of an upgrade imo. your paying an addition 15 gs for shittier interior and a uglier car.

evo 9 ftw.

AZSPEED3 05-08-2012 05:25 PM

Don't mean to thread jack but holy hell @CaptObvious75 love the avatar. I'll play any game with her anytime.

I would test drive the X before mentally making up your mind.

I did the opposite that you might do and consider my move an upgrade.

I can see how people would see the switch either way, but I'm very happy with my decision.

Lex 05-08-2012 08:09 PM

I'm in Canada. After I got raped with a $32k MS3 brand new the only mod I can afford is Eskimo jizz. Kinda like E85 but better.

You mean the worlds economy? All money is debt my friend.

manila 05-08-2012 08:23 PM

335i?
With a tune I heard those things are pretty nasty. Not sure if you wanna dish out the dough for a German-mobile.

StayBroke 05-08-2012 08:40 PM

any 135i or 335i are pretty nasty fully bolted and tuned.

speed3black87 05-08-2012 08:43 PM

I sold mitsubishi;s for 2 years, and the evo's were in with major repairs all the time, do you have issues with it?

Alright, so after finding out that you guys have to spend 32k on your MS3's I don't feel as angry that you get tech package headlights and taillights on all of your MS3's...lol

That's insane they cost that much up there...

mofo! you're only up the road too! that's cheap...

Did you buy in calgary?

bertrand_CX_7 05-08-2012 10:46 PM

brand new for 19K + Shipping && sale taxes

slvrms312 05-09-2012 01:37 AM

If you buy the Evo X, their weak point is the rod bolts and differential pins. Keep in mind that the factory turbo is smaller than the Evo IX, and the GSR weighs in at about 3518 lbs, or at least mine did, which was a 2010 model.

acidhalo 05-09-2012 03:01 AM

Well the EVO X is garbage, Ill tell you the number 1 reason not to get it. NOT MANUAL. Paddle Shifters.. GHEY. FUCKING RETARDED. If im buying a race inspired car, I wanna fucking race it. If you are set on EVO, VIII MR my son, beasty. Personally Im an Sti person, more HP than the EVO. the Sti is a sexier car. Stay with the MS3 or upgrade. 2012 Evo 291 HP, 2012 MS3 263. 2012 STi 305HP

WTF....dude you should have come to the US n bought it, I paid 24k WITH the tech package.

StayBroke 05-09-2012 04:50 AM

I was in the same boat before i bought the ms3. My choices were a evo, stil, or ms3.

I bought the ms3 because this forum. I have 23.5 grand in my car including purchase price.

Idk what hp i am at but i can tell you that you will not get the power i have from sti or evo for that price.

I'll bet you said the same thing about the Speed 5 years ago.

Remember, it's not so much an upgrade as a lateral move.

ckMS3 05-09-2012 05:22 AM

If you don't need awd for snow or something, stick with the 3 and get some more power mods. Only thing awd is good for is traction in lower gears, the lack of it makes the 3 fun to drive imo.

G26 05-09-2012 05:39 AM

I still don't understand the appeal of the evo or sti. Those shits are $35k plus, for a 4 door sedan, that isn't even much faster than our ms3. Sure it has awd (not to mention more shit to break, o joy!), but how many times are you actually going to be launching that shit.

Plus they are from brands that don't exactly scream quality.

For that money, I am getting something with a v8.

Ok..I can tell your not a evo guy. Clearly you love subaru. Let me point out all that was wrong.

Evo X GSR= 5 speed manual

Evo VII MR= 6 speed manual and if your an evo guy than you know that the RS is the way to go because the 6 speed manual in the MR is prone to fail.

Evo IX > Evo VII

Subaru is good DD for 300-400whp dd....EVO is good for 300-800whp dd

Pretty much Im saying that sti with slight mods is a good dd but if you want BEAST MODE ENGAUGED then you want evo.
