I picked up some Bridgestone S-04 Pole Positions, these are 10/32" tread depth and ran about $128 each@215-45-18. These have held up pretty well and the debate included Continental DW and Michelin Pilot Super Sports, the DWs were only like $20 extra per tire but with that $80 rebate Moco has I probably would have jumped on the Continentals due to their great reputation. Glad they're holding up well for you though! The Michelins are supposed to be the epic but at like $200 a tire, had to pass lol.

My mistake - I thought you were on OEM wheels for whatever reason. I'm curious to see if they bulge on 7.5s.

My Coopers arrive tomorrow, so I'll be giving the "DW clones" a thorough thrashing and see how they behave.

Edit: initial impressions... bad. very bad. 2nd gear is basically like free revving they grip so poorly. hopefully it's the extreme humidity and fog dampening the roads - I'll give them a couple more days before I ship them back to DTD. waaaaay too much of a full summer tire with stiff responsive sidewalls and lateral grip, dick all for straight line stick.

Well my Cooper "DW clones" didn't last 24 hours on the car before I decided I'm shipping them back. For someone wanting nimble response and a quiet comfortable tire, they're pretty awesome - but they were completely out of their league at providing straight line grip. In 2nd gear the car may as well have been on jack stands.

So... I ordered a pair of Conti DW 235/40/18s and I will eat about $80 in expense for shipping and mounting twice for this experiment. I hope these stick better or I'll be going back to Neo Gens and their slovenly sidewalls.

Im on my second set of Continental DWS' and I love them. They are rated for 50k and mine wore out at about 35k. Still alot better than the Dunlops they came with which were gone at 20k.

I got mine at discount tire, they warranty the tire so they prorated the miles I didnt use before I needed the tire replaced, got $150 off the new set when I replaced them which was a nice surprise.

First set was 225 and I ordered the 235 for a little bit better traction.

They are not "R" compound unless you were referring to the NT05R @CWP_MS3;

They hooked great, but not as good as the NT01s that you can take a chunk out of them when their ice cold because their so gummy.

For the price and performance I believe the NT01 takes the cake.
Do you have any experience with Michellin pss? Because at this point I'm torn between those and the NT05, and now that you mention the NT01 I'm slightly more confused as to what I should get. From what I've been able to research the NT05s are a stiffer sidewall than the pss, which I assume means better handling/turn-in. And, of course this probably means the michellin pss are more comfortable and all that. The thing is that I'd sacrifice all comfort for better performance, but I can't figure out whether or not the pss are somehow comfy while performing better still, than NT05s; I'm not sure of course but I doubt it. This brings me to the NT05 vs. NT01; how "streetable" would you say they are. Of course I'll stray away from them if they are dangerous/overly inconvenient for you average (dry) street driving, but if longevity is the only real sacrifice for all that performance I'm willing to make that sacrifice personally.

Sorry for the long ass question! I see you have experience with both Nittos and I wanted to ask

holding out pretty good in 255/40 17. Though my wear issue is more along the lines of spinning heavily 1st-3rd gears. Pretty much all highway. Nice ride.

EXCELLENT in the rain, torrential Florida style.
Not as grippy as I could use, but I needed something with some longevity, and I can't afford Michelin PSS

Nt01s will hook better because they are a competition tire, R compound. You gain grip and loose tire life, if I'm not mistaken about half the life of a NT05. Also, Nt01s are $40-50 more per tire.

I have no experience with Michellins.

I would go with Nt05's for the price/life span/grip.

@12blkms3; the car rarely gets driven, so nt01s aren't crazy out of the question, but I think the nt05s do make more sense like you said

Thanks a lot for helping me with a decision

Conti DW's installed today. They run pretty wide for 235s, so between that, the already soft sidewalls, and my 7.5" wheels, it makes for a very sloppy feel, not at all like a Summer tire.

The plus side is - they *do* hook. 2nd gear is still squabbling all the way to red line, but there's significant forward progress being made. I'm definitely pleased in that regard.

I would put these on par with the Nitto Neo Gens. They exhibit the same grip and feel, and that makes sense - both tires are at the extremes of their categorization. The UHP all season that doesn't really do Winter, and the Summer tire that wants to be comfortable and quiet.

And if I made the Cooper RS3-S sound bad, I shouldn't have. I'm certain they would shred these DWs around a road course. They just weren't what I'm looking for.

Gotta hold 1 line in a turn. lol You can't go in wide and then turn in hard, they don't like that. lol They'll stick, but you've gotta start and end with the same aggressiveness within the turn.

Dat straight line though...

Hah - same with the Neo Gen - the ultimate lateral grip is quite good, it's the transitions they don't do well at all.

I agree though - the straight line grip is easily worth the tradeoff. Thanks for pointing them out, I would've never tried them without this thread.

I have these and can only say they are amazing. I cant get 2nd to spin unless its wet, though my mods arent anything crazy. Ive had them for about 10k miles now and the wear is minimal.

Needed to clarify after a few more miles and WOT rips on these DW's - they stick *much* better than the Neo Gen. I'm getting more passes without 2nd gear spin than with it now that they've scrubbed in nicely. Extremely impressive.

Now I just need to get my wheel repaired from where the kid at Walmart took 8" of paint off the lip...

That's good to hear about on a S3. Any idea what kind of power/torque you're putting down?

Ballpark 360-370, torque numbers similar but it's a reverse taper of course, tops out at 24.5psi.

The tread pattern, wear rating, and lack of actual rubber on the road from the additional water channels simply don't make sense for the grip. Unicorn jizz rubber compound.

That's why I made a thread. lol

It helps the community, and more buyers = make the same tires for longer period of time. Win-Win by educating people.

anyone have experience with both the DW and DWS? I don't plan on tracking anytime soon and am just looking for a DD tire that'll last me long, and the DWS is rated 540 vs the DW 340.

looking for a set to last me a long time (at least 40k miles, wishful thinking i know)

I put the DWS on my gf's Hyundai Accent. They are definitely not going to track as well as the DW will like I have on my car.

DWS material doesn't seem as sticky and seems even softer sidewalls. If you aren't planning on doing any spirited driving they will be perfect for you.

@MS3inDC; rocks DWS.

They seem like a damn good tire, and when my winters take a shit, those will be the tires of choice to replace my current conti procontacts.

Like i said i run the dws and they seem pretty good for what they are(all season). I have had them for 12k so far and the wear is very very minimal. Also i was just at the track and put down 13.7 on them and i am sure i can get lower bc i wheel hopped off the line a little. All and all its a good all around tire that does give semi good grip

I have DWS on my winter wheels. They function amazingly for our weather type. And they are amazing in the rain/wet.

I had them on for a trip to NH, and it ended up snowing about a foot. Were they as good as a full winter tire? Nope. But I could still get around and do what I needed to do.

Short answer is, yes, they are an exeptional tire.

We run the DWS on our Mazda 6S Wagon and Hatchback as our dedicated Winter tires....they have done well in 6-8" of snow here in Cleveland. I hear from friends that they do well in rain and dry too. The DW's are much better in the dry, though!

I'll go ahead and put in my vote for the DWs.

The stock Dunlops are ok, but I had bad problems with the inside sidewalls failing. I had 4 fail actually, all at about 5k miles.

The differences I have noticed after being on the DWs for some 20k+ miles...

DWs have softer sidewalls and a little less feedback, but grip like nobody's business. At first I didn't like the softness, because high speed turns felt sloppy, but you get used to it and you know that once the tires settle into the turn they aren't going to let go.

The benefits to the softer sides are a more comfortable and quiet ride. Given that LA freeways are as close to off road as you can get on pavement, this is a major win.

Handle equally well in both the dry and wet.

Life is pretty damn good. I can't say exactly how long mine are going because I have had to replace a few due to road hazards, but I am guessing 20k-30k is doable for daily commuting and the occasional corner flick fest.

For the overall quality, with very little compromise, you really can't go wrong with these. That they are well priced is just an added bonus.

It looks like then changed some personnel within their group and I have gotten several emails about contact changes and issues with my submission. Recently, I got an email back from Chris Jenkins who confirmed that the payment would go through but he also mentioned that the reason for my issues was "The reason is that you and another participant have used the same code. Once one is approved, the other is automatically denied." I am not sure what code he is referring to but I only submitted my rebate once. I dont want @MOCO MS3; getting in any trouble.

I still need to get my fenders rolled so I have not had a chance to enjoy the tires.

Nick

What pressures are you guys running in these tires on a stock suspension set up? I have been running 36psi in the front and 34 in the back, but thinking about adding 2 psi to both.

For daily i run 35 psi all around...on the track I bump it up to 38-39 psi all around. The tire handles the extra pressure just fine

Does keeping the pressure the same in all wheels allow for a neutral steer?

Love my DWS except they really have no protection for your rims! Be prepared to have nice scratches on your wheels at the slightest of curb hits. I'm going to have to fill, sand, and paint my wheels when I get time.

I do the same, or thereabouts. I run either 36/34 or 37/35 depending on what feels right that day.

Either you have wrong tire sizes, or you need to learn how to drive more carefully. I had 225-40s on 8.5-in wheel and never curbed them once. I have 245-40s DW now on the same wheels and the tires definitely bulge out further than the lip.
