Cool down Genpu?

Does anyone let genpu idle before shutting it off? I have read in some other threads turbo timers are worthless. Is it a waste of $4/gal. 93 octane or will it help turbo last longer? Thanks in advance for your thoughts.

sellers 05-24-2011 07:38 PM

yes.

Tokay444 05-24-2011 07:44 PM

He asked two questions.
Yes, it's a waste.
Shut it off and nce.

i'm an idiot...what does nce stand for?

DONOTBUGME 05-24-2011 08:48 PM

this thread is as worthless as a turbo timer

BLK_MS3 05-24-2011 08:54 PM

If you're not beating on it, 15 seconds or so is fine.

robry 05-25-2011 09:45 AM

I let mine idle for 30 seconds or so if I just beat on it, but if I was driving slowly around a parking lot or something prior to parking, then I just turn it off.

I had a journal bearing non-water cooled precision turbo on my RSX and would do the same thing after hassle with trying to use a turbo timer on it. never had any problems, that turbo is still working over a year later just fine on another car, FWIW.

rfinkle2 05-25-2011 10:11 AM

From the manual... although if i'm not driving the car hard, I don't let it idle.

Turbocharger Informationí
After driving at freeway speeds or up a long hill, idle the engine at least 30 seconds to
cool the turbo before turning off the engine. Avoid simply shutting the engine off
abruptly after a hard or long drive. Damage to the turbocharger may result.
l Do not race or over-rev the engine when starting. This should not be done with ANYengine, especially not with one that's turbocharged. Do not add any aftermarket devices to alter the engine's ignition timing, fuel delivery, orturbo boost pressure. This may lead to serious engine damage and may void yourwarranty.

no care ever

G26 05-25-2011 12:59 PM

If I haven't been into boost to much, usually let it idle for 15-30 seconds. If I've been driving it pretty hard I'll idle it for 1-5 minutes. It might not need it, but for peace of mind, it is a small price to pay.

My favorite threads on a PERFORMANCE car website:

1. Can I use 87 octane gas in my car? Paying the 20 cent premium($2.40/tank usually) is killing me

2. Gas is expensive, will idling for 15 seconds kill my wallet but save mah turbo?

Go buy a Prius. You're fucking welcome for my thoughts.

HLR Element 05-25-2011 01:17 PM

well i have a decently long drive way and park under a car port so usually by that point i've idled close to a minute or more so i just shut it off instantly. Unless you live in the middle of nowhere where you went WOT into your driveway, you most likely allow the car a bit to cool before shut off.

triplejumper18 05-25-2011 01:49 PM

I like to pull into my garage and do about 30 seconds of 2-step to make sure the neighborhood is awake and then abruptly turn the car off.

Lex 05-25-2011 02:05 PM

You guys are silly, I never shut mine off.

Just to waste gas and watch your coolant temps go up?

eiser 06-18-2011 08:13 AM

I modded my turbo timer to red line the engine for 45 seconds and then shut down. It annoys some folks in parking lots, but really cleans out the Vonnegut valve.

G26 06-18-2011 08:15 AM

If I haven't been going WOT much or at all, It idles for around 15-30 secs, or the time to get my windows shades up. If I have been going WOT multiple times, then I'll let it sit for 1-3 minutes.

bmfms3 06-19-2011 11:52 PM

Yeah I just wait to the last minute to step on it and make it to the ta TRA ta TRA ta TRA to clean out my exhaust and make an exciting and a smoke filled entarance just like in the movies :burnout:
