dealin' with the dealership

So I walks into the dealership and I says "OK pigf#ckers, I wants synthetic motor oil and I wants it now ... and don't be givin' me any lip" ... and they filled her up with synthetic! OK, it may not have unfolded exactly that way. Actually, I simply said can you give me a single good reason for not using a synthetic motor oil in my Speed3 ... "Nope" was the response and they went ahead with the synthetic. Quite a change from the earlier "No we can't ... on pain of death, as dictated by Mazda Canada"! Progress?

It came to $62.60 (Canadian) which included filter and plug gasket. There's a $2.00 disposal fee on top of that for my original engine and tranny oil.

robbspeed 11-15-2015 07:42 PM

That's $47.07 U.S. currency. Not bad.

I have a Greddy catch can and noticed that what I'm pouring out of it looks and smells like fuel. The catch can seems to be filling faster since I started adding the 2 gallons of meth per tank. Thinking the synthetic would be less vulnerable to the fuel contamination I decided to make the switch. There's only about 21000 kms (13400 miles) on the car so likely no big wear yet.

Did you get more aggressive with your tune after adding the meth? Or do you add the meth just for some extra knock resistance and leave the tune alone?

I just do the bolt-ons. I trust Justin at Freektune to take care of my tuning needs. It does feel as though he's managed to milk another 20 or so whp out of it with his last map (since adding the meth). It'll now break loose in 3rd on a cool day. Big fun. Can't imagine what it'll be like if I go with the BNR S4.

I just did my own oil change for the 1st time and the 6 qts (Mobil 1) + filter came out to $48 and change. How was this cheaper?!

This may be of interest. I contacted Mazda Canada head office to get something in writing that indicated synthetic was now acceptable. This is the response they sent.

Interesting so mazda is still in bed with castrol. Either way that's one of the most popular oils for a engine.

Wow, that's cheap as hell. The cheapest I've ever paid to have synthetic put in was about US$75. One place I think was US$110. I was in a rush and it was close. But now I do it myself. Oil and filter cost me about $35. And I get to pick the oil and the filter.

I dont know about the newer engines, but me, as soon as I got out of waranty it's beign Rotella T6 done by myself and it's a lot cheaper. I even use it in my KTM dirt bike!

It comes on special for 30$ at Canadian Tire plus they have a 7$ off coupon sometimes. Just stock up!
