DIY shift knob finishing Ok, so I have made a handfull of shift knobs for people. Nothing crazy, just some simple ones. I made a couple for myself that I ended up selling, but got quite a few requests for more of the "shifter extender" style. I actually have some time now to do it so I ordered up material and made some test knobs. I was playing around with finish and wanted to get peoples thoughts on what they liked, and how I should finish the others. (15 total) The knobs are all 6061 aluminum weighing about 270 grams. I really like it, gives great leverage and puts the shifter in easy reach for fast reaches. Im trying to figure out how to finish them, so opinions are welcome. The picture isnt the greatest it looks like, but its really hard to get a perfect shot. The one on the left is sandblasted, the one in the middle was put in a rock tumbler and the last one was hand polished with 1000grit paper. All are black anodized (I could also do clear if I wanted) I really like the matte-ish finish that comes with the sandblasted one, but my thoughts aren't always the same as the groups. Let me know what you think. Link Back to other thread for picture: http://www.mazdaspeedforums.org/foru...ishing-121734/ |

I like round shift knobs myself, but I will say that the more polished one would get covered in fingerprints. I like the flat finish best. I would think that it would transfer heat to your hand slower, thus not feeling as hot in the sun. |
Plastidip FTW! |
