Double Clutching

Hey all,

Lately i've been trying to double clutch when i downshift and i'm finding that it's a lot smoother than trying to blip the throttle. makes things a lot nicer when going 5-3 or 5-4, freeway offramp situations. i've also heard that it's easier on the synchros. does anyone else get satisfactory results with this, or am i fail at manual?

SnowPlow 09-14-2011 08:41 PM

Seems like you are possibly making a simple task kind of complicated.

ClutchEngaged 09-14-2011 08:45 PM

You almost had me? You never had your car. Granny shiftin’, not double clutchin’ like you should.

SnowPlow 09-14-2011 08:46 PM

Most over quoted line of any movie LOL

heh, that was the point :wink1:

paradigmshift 09-14-2011 09:01 PM

I personally double clutch almost all the time downshifting/heel toe and sometimes upshift too if it feels a little resistant to get in gear. I don't know if it is faster to DC for sure, but it seems faster to me as I don't wait for the syncros. I generally think of the synchros as a little forgiveness for a missed timed/blip shift.
73,000 mi so far no issues.

BLK_MS3 09-14-2011 09:39 PM

Double clutching is for big rigs.

OK I rev match, heel toe, and power shift on occasion.... At the risk of sounding noob.... What the hell is double clutching? I seriously thought that was some shit vin diesel made up!

Enki 09-14-2011 10:34 PM

Double clutching:
Clutch in, take out of gear (neutral)
Clutch out briefly
Clutch in, back in gear

With a proper throttle mapping, rev-matching is easy as shit up or down. Just ask @jroc; he's been in my car.

somebody correct me if i am wrong but it is going into neutral, blipping the throttle and then depressing the clutch again and going into gear?

regardless it is stupid

just rev match/heel toe

EDIT... Too slow

Fatguy729 09-14-2011 10:38 PM

Ok, just googled... Double clutch - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Seems unnecessary, why not just heel toe? The above reference also mentions its for transmissions without syncro. Even if you don't want to heel toe, our flywheel is so damn heavy, just slide it into gear when it drops to the appropriate rpm!?

edit... LOL those were fast responses! Though I'm on my phone so shit goes slower

ahskeetz 09-14-2011 10:39 PM

why so much effort? i have no probs downshifting just by revmatching.

Enki 09-14-2011 11:27 PM

Basically it's for trannies with no synchros. If you want to go the no-synchro route, get a dog box and skip the clutch all together.

86AmishMs3 09-14-2011 11:45 PM

hahahhah fucking gen2 noobs.....double clutching.

snOhio 09-15-2011 05:31 AM

started doing it because i was getting a lot of resistance when trying to put the shifter in gear on a downshift. never do it on the upshifts.

Pedal-Force 09-15-2011 05:53 AM

I do it sometimes on downshifts out of habit. Used to drive cars with shot synchros. Not necessary on a new car with good synchros though.

But for those of you saying you rev match instead, it's not the same. You're only matching the engine to the front of the tranny, double clutch matches front to back, then to engine.

The synchros aren't there to match the engine to the tranny, that's what the clutch is for, they match the front to back of tranny.

I find its difficult to double clutch in the Speed3 with how late the clutch engages. The revs are down by then. Easier to just rev match

pinggoy 09-15-2011 01:30 PM

just rev match and done.

pingaboo 09-16-2011 04:21 AM

shit i have no idea what you guys are talking about

Instead of shifting to go faster your going slower.
The rear end of the car is belting out a symphony of orgasmic sound.

Fin.

Sweet man u learned how to drive stick.

housegsx 09-16-2011 11:16 AM

I double clutch upshifting until the car is at operating temperature.

MZR165 09-16-2011 11:45 AM

Goin on 60 years old and I still rev match!!

Vansquish 09-16-2011 11:52 AM

I've started double-clutching on downshifts, as I've noticed that my 2nd gear synchros are starting to provide some resistance to getting into gear EVEN THOUGH I HAVE ALWAYS REV-MATCHED. My car has a little over 80k on it and the OEM clutch is still going strong *knocks wood*.

I double-clutching can save you some serious dough if you do it properly and do so to treat your transmission well. It's also kind of a fun exercise of control over the car, though you can look like a complete twat if you get it wrong.

That's the first thing I thought of.

Outside of Big Rigs, that's the only time I've of heard of double clutching...

aaronc7 09-16-2011 12:10 PM

Hell, you don't even need to do it on a semi (or even use the clutch other than for moving from a stop). Float the clutch and rev match!

True. I don't even use the clutch on my freightliner except for going from a stop other than that match the revs and its all good

just heel toe/rev match.... i can see doing it when trannies not at operating temps, but really i think its a waste of time. i do rev match every time i shift, double clutch randomly or if its really cold out and not at operating temps like stated before

Yeah, we get a pretty nice fleet, but exhaust filters are the worst idea ever for a truck that's driven in town only. They fucking suck.

myslow1 09-19-2011 05:17 PM

wait... double clutching? is that the ricer term for rev matching...?

obviously you read absolutely nothing in this thread

outshined 09-21-2011 12:26 AM

My MS3 is new.

In light of all the "OMGWTFBBQ I'm grinding X gear" threads I've been double clutching every shift when the car is cold, except for when I'm lazy or it's 80+ outside.

When the car warms up, I rev match every single-gear downshift, and double-clutch when changing by two or more.

Travis 09-23-2011 08:08 AM

Wow, if it's that big of a deal buy the new 370z, it rev matches automatically.

I'll keep that in mind for when I retire.

lazn 09-23-2011 11:25 AM

Damn man, and I been triple clutching this whole time!

:D

But really, double clutching saves some wear on the synchros, and that's about it.

Travis 09-23-2011 12:33 PM

I used to have to double cluch my Dads old farm truck. But it was a pos and that's probably why he taught me to shift like that. Now I own a 2011 hot hatch and I refuse to drive it the same way as the rust bucket. Rev match works for me :)
