| Not Ranked : 0 score I'm always a fan of heel-toe-shifting to downshift. If you're not familiar with it, this is when you have the ball of your big toe on the brake and roll the right side of your foot over to the accelerator to 'blip' the engine before taking your foot off the clutch when you're in the lower gear. The premise is to match the revs of that lower gear and you can remove your foot off the clutch quickly instead of easing it out. If you do it correctly, you should have no chnage in speed when you let your foot off the clutch. Blip too much and your car will accelerate slighly. Blip to little, and it will jerk slower. The good news is the peddles on an MS6 are very well aligned for this. My two cents! |

| Not Ranked : 0 score I would not even think about heel-toe-ing at this point until you get regular downshifting. Normally I will only downshift down to 3rd when approaching a light, then throw it into neutral and coast to a stop. Maybe down to 2nd if I know the light is going to change. Don't downshift to 1st ever unless you are under 5 mph, my car won't even let me force it into 1st if I'm above 5 mph. And just keep practicing, this was my first manual car too. 3rd & 4th gear between 2800-4000 RPMs is a fun range to play around with.

| Not Ranked : 0 score I always downshift...the first time i drove stick i put it in neutral and used the brakes, seconds after i did this my dad reached over from the passenger seat and slapped me in the head and told me 'thats not the way to do it..' so i just downshift, and like all these guys said once you figure it out, learn how to heal toe.

| Not Ranked : 0 score This has some decent explanations of shifting techniques...probably not the best, but it gives you something to go by. Shifting Technique When you're downshifting, if you want a smooth transition you must rev-match. Double clutching is not necessary in modern transmissions with synchros. Synchros in essence handle the double clutching for you...that's what they're there for...use them when you're just learning shifting techniques. Basically you have 3 parts...the engine (engine speed)...the input on the trans (trans shaft speed)...then the output on the trans (wheel speed). On an upshift, the engine rpm naturally falls down so you don't need to worry about rev match as much. On a downshift, engine RPM should be increased to match what it should be at a particular wheel speed in the lower gear before the clutch is engaged. This way it puts MUCH less stress/wear on the clutch and drive train. If you don't rev match, your clutch/trans is doing all the work to bring the engine RPM up to match the wheel speed. If you dump the clutch you get a hard jolt as the clutch grabs and spins up the engine...if you slip the clutch it is smoother, but obviously wears it out quicker. It's just better all around (for your comfort and the cars health) to rev match all the time. The synchros will handle the matching of the trans shaft speed with the wheel speed, so you don't have to worry about double clutching...unless your synchros go out...then it gets interesting lol. As far as when coming to a stop...what I do is dependent on how lazy i am at the time of the stoppage If I'm being super lazy I'll pop the car out of gear and coast...but if I wanna hear the engine and have a bit of fun then I downshift. | Not Ranked : 0 score if you're rolling to a stop there's no reason to clutch in and downshift through all the gears. when I'm coming to a stop I pop the tranny out of gear and brake to a stop, simple as that. downshifting will just wear your clutch out faster since it has to work more. you should, however, learn to properly downshift for when you need to accelerate and need a lower gear. as everyone else has said you have to rev match to do this properly. |

| Not Ranked : 0 score Eh, I rarely downshift when coming to a stop, mostly its to accelerate. However, if I need to downshift either way, I rev match to reduce clutch/synchro wear. No reason to downshift to slow down, thats the brakes job, and I would rather wear the brakes than the clutch.

| Not Ranked : 0 score you will get jerking in the 1-2 zone. you will learn when to give gas to keep the rpms smooth.. upgraded engine mounts, as said above, will help loads with the bouncing engine syndrome.. i like to downshift, especially when driving hard, as it lets me stay in control longer and be ready for accelerations, but, also like everyone has said, you'll need to learn when to 'blip' the throttle as you downshift, before you let go of the clutch. this will definitely help with jerking. also, work on clutch modulation, i.e.: slowly and gently letting off the clutch as you work the accelerator. you'll get it! ap is before power mods, like intakes, exhaust, etc.. upgraded motor mounts will not put your engine in danger at all..

| Not Ranked : 0 score After watching a lot of Option Auto videos from Japan I'm pretty sure you can learn a good heel-toe technique from there (that or maybe I just enjoy them). I was under the impression heel toeing was better for coming into a corner because your braking and down shifting to an optimal gear simultaneously. From a roll just blip the throttle like the other said to the appropriate RPM level of the gear you selected, and try to judge where the RPM level would be in that gear.

| Not Ranked : 0 score Downshift that avatar. It's going too fast for me to concentrate! To downshift into 2nd you have to be going pretty slow or rev it to like 4-5000 RPM. When I first started I misinterpreted "blip" as quickly tapping the gas but I was doing it too quick and not high enough so the RPMs would drop too fast and I would still buck. If you're still bucking you're not revving high enough.

| Not Ranked : 0 score To a complete stop: Stay in high gear until you hit 1,000 rpm and push in the clutch. Downshifting is pointless and just uses up your clutch. |

| Not Ranked : 0 score Heel and toe FTW! BUT...I have a buddy who swears by putting the car into say 3rd if going 50mph, and very slowly letting out the clutch, which then engine brakes/downshifts all at once. Is that bad?? |

| Not Ranked : 0 score Coming to a stop I think about what saves gas and brakes the most. Assuming there's no one behind me I stay in whatever gear I was in to let it slow down. Of course if staying in gear would slow me down would prevent me from getting to the stop without using more gas I kick it in neutral so I can maintain momentum. But when I can get away with it I always stay in gear, unless of course I would expect to stall. Also staying in gear is somewhat of a safety precaution in case someone from on coming traffic veers over and otherwise you'd have to shift in to move away. And I should double check on it, but with momentum rolling you on hand, you save more gas in gear instead of being in neutral. Maybe it's a DI thing... Nice tits, heel and toe is for turns, probably for you to learn a bit later.

| Not Ranked : 0 score once you get one gear at a time down, learn to do 4-3, 5-3, 5-2, etc...this is nice when approaching a tight corner. 3-2 is personally tricky, but i have found if you make it 3-nuetral-2 rather than a diagonal motion its a lot smoother. |

| Not Ranked : 0 score the problem with 3-2 downshift is you need more revs than the previous down shift. just blip the throttle a split second longer and it will match up better. dont worry about the brakes for now. get up to speed and coast to a stop and rev match each gear as the rpms fall. one foot on the clutch one foot one the gas. each gear needs a bit more throttle to match up correctly as you work your way from 6th to 2nd. 2nd needing the most throttle. this will give you a better feel for throttle input. once you've got that then start bringing the brakes in to play. |

| Not Ranked : 0 score If you need to ask, then don't even worry about downshifting until you need to accelerate... And heel-toe suggestions for street driving is laughable... My $.02... Drive like a normal person... take a race driving course... practice heel-toe downshifting on the track, when it is actually necessary...
