| Not Ranked : 0 score Downshifting basically makes the engine an air pump, uses no fuel, and requires less brakes to stop. I downshift.

| Not Ranked : 0 score I mostly just throw it in Neutral and coast to the light to save the clutch and it also betters your gas mileage. Probably why I averaged 27.9mpg for the almost 2yrs I had it.

Also, wear on the clutch? There's less wear on the clutch during engine braking than there is in acceleration, and FAR less than wide open throttle. and knowledge is something you're lacking. Please move on. BTW, your stopping distance via downshifting and hard braking is shorter than that of throwing yer shit in neutral and braking. Hope you throw it in neutral and rear-end a semi.

| Not Ranked : 0 score Neutral most of the time unless I'm driving downhill. In my day-to-day urban/suburban driving, I will have a lot less time to react to douchebags on the road during my commutes to and from work if I worry about downshifting all the time. Yeah, it uses no fuel and it helps save brakes but I'll save my downshifting work for emptier roads or the track (if I ever get around to visiting one).

Also, as stated above, coasting in neutral requires more braking effort, downshifting, even if staying in, say, 3rd gear and slamming the brakes will stop quicker.

| Not Ranked : 0 score When I drive the car (I've been driving only manual transmissions for six years now), I never have to think about shifting or going into the right gear in general (it's automatic with my mind and body, I suppose), whether it's an upshift or downshift. When it comes to braking, I only tend to do a downshift on downgrades. If I'm driving slowly enough (say I'm in second or third gear), I'd just leave it in that gear to help ease the braking process until I'm a few miles an hour away from a complete stop. Other than that, I guess I'm a bitch for throwing it in neutral but I do know how to rev-match downshift if that helps anything... hahaha.

| Not Ranked : 0 score Downshifting instead of using breaks/neutral has a tendency to force more oil/fuel into the intake manifold. This is combatted with an oil catch can, but it is still present to some degree. For this reason, I use neutral and brake unless there is a reason I need to downshift.

Don't mind him, he's just bitter because he has no mods or has to spend all his money on maintenance for his gendone. I'd be mad too. | |

idling up to a stop light with the car in neutral would use more fuel, as you are keeping the engine running. one might suggest that as long as you rev match on the downshift, you aren't putting any major stress on the clutch material.

| Not Ranked : 0 score This thread made me lol. Its been covered but shit- downshifting uses less gas so yous guys are gay. Also, not downshifting because it gives you less time to react to idiots is just about the stupidest thing I may have ever heard. And to think you actually track the car.... Your times must be amazing.

| Not Ranked : 0 score Thanks to this thread, now I'm finding myself rev-matched downshifting more when approaching stops. My morning commute was full of them, despite the asshats on the road I complained about. Whether I'm neutral-coasting or downshifting, though, I still see people pretty much ride up toward my rear bumper (and, in some cases, tapping me) because they don't understand I don't have to use my brakes all the time to stop. Bastards. 'Tis the life of the "point A to B" automatic-transmission driver...

| Not Ranked : 0 score Does no one here throw it in reverse? You can stop on a dime like that and if you use your brakes @ the same time and time it right you can do frront flips for style points!

| Not Ranked : 0 score I was gonna write something, then I wasn't, then I saw this and thought ok. Yeah I like having a synchomesh reverse gear. I don't think I've every had a car that had this. I like going the other way too, going in reverse out of a parking spot, then at -10mph, revving into the launch controller and slippin the clutch real good. Makes lots of noise and popping and shit and is fun to burn the clutch up a little bit sometimes without actually making forward progress. Really.

Usually I just apply brake, leaving vehicle in gear. Brakes are cheaper than clutches and yes fuel is not consumed if car is IN GEAR and still moving. What about THIS you guys? How many of you can drive without using the clutch? I mean you HAVE to to get moving in 1st but I've driven all the way to work, 10 miles in city traffic, without using the clutch except to get moving. If done properly you can get it grindless.
