Drive away without advanc key

Has anyone else tryed driving away without their key? I tryed to see what happens and i got a block away and all it does is beep at you. Kinda useless and unsecure if you ask me. I was expecting it to shut off or something after a while.

DONOTBUGME 12-03-2011 10:54 PM

cause that would be safe for the car just to shut off.

dantes5823 12-03-2011 10:55 PM

Or you could let some deuce steal your car......or atleast an alarm or something productive...not "hey man your keys missing but who cares"

Sid3wayS 12-03-2011 10:58 PM

I haven't tried it myself so i cant say ....but damn a block??? I step out of the car and it instantly starts sounding like r2-d2.

Yea it does that once i close the door too but does me now good. I gave my buddy the key, hopped in and off i went, and it starts flashing key not found and it makes the same sound when you dont put your sealt bet on.

Vansquish 12-03-2011 11:19 PM

Yeah...the "smart key" system is kind of dumb in practice. If you start the car, and get out of it, someone else can drive it away...and can continue driving it until they turn the car off. Once that happens, it's a little more of a challenge to get it running again.

Sid3wayS 12-03-2011 11:20 PM

Damn very disapointed. My girls lexus shuts off 100m from her key. Its a credit card lookin thing she has in her purse. I just assumed our car did the same.

dantes5823 12-03-2011 11:21 PM

The way mazda works its advance key is kinda retarded. My mom has an 07 Nissan Murano and it has way better practice for the key. You walk away it locks, leave it running and walk away, shuts off. Mazda is like nah that makes to much sense.

I always just assumed the same thing. Ive walked away from the car just thinking "nah itll turn off if you like put it in gear or touch the brake with no key." Bout the only good thing is that i can warm up the car without having to leave the key, but they could have just added a "no key car goes in gear=shut off" parameter.

MoparGo 12-03-2011 11:22 PM

I wonder...

Did you try powering off at a distance. Maybe the car won't start again.

That would be a theft deterrent. Or rather, a "continuation of theft... deterrent".

Sid3wayS 12-03-2011 11:24 PM

Well I guess its true what they say:
ASSUME makes an ASS of U and ME

Well i didnt try turning it off cause then i would have been keyless and had to walk and get the key lol. But its dumb... And im pretty sure there isnt a "personalization" that can change this.

I think there is an "auto-lock" feature with the advanced key system from Mazda. I don't trust it, as I'm paranoid about my car to begin with, but I think that there's a 15 or 25 second time-out or something along those lines. If you press the unlock button and then don't open a door, it locks again after a delay if memory serves.

I just can't remember whether it's the unlock button on the key-fob itself or if it's the request button on the door. In any case, it's in the owner's manual.

Yea if you unlock and dont open then it relocks. Nothing about a start car walk away parameter. It would be nice if the car was on and i walk away it would relock at least. Not "HEY SOME ONE TAKE ME !"

MoparGo 12-03-2011 11:32 PM

I think...

...the car will not start if the smart key is far enough away. That's a deterrent.

Of course if you are near it, and it's open, someone could jump in & it might get jacked. But, if they power off... they're stuck.

I think you'd need to add a starter interrupt to get the desired effect.

That's personalization that can be accomplished fairly easily.

Ive actually tryed having one start the car with me litterally leaning on the car and it wont.

ChokeMeiLikeIt 12-03-2011 11:46 PM

i agree with just about everyone here. thought it was a system that was poorly set up. i dont think it would've taken a whole lot more to add a couple more simple features that everyone has talked about. most other vehicles with smart keys like this have autolock on a time delay, or a shutoff feature. strange ours has nothing. more of a gimmick than anything.

others have mentioned how easy it would be fix these issues with a quick visit to an aftermarket shop...but then lots of us have to deal with less than mod friendly dealerships that do nothing more than look for an excuse to void warrantys. still small potatoes for many of the other great parts of the car

dantes5823 12-03-2011 11:59 PM

Im at the point where i cant even think of going to the dealer any more. Not like they have anything to offer me anyways. A free oil change..oh yay me. If it was something they could change then i would have done it pre part list. But they can't. They can change a few things that should have been done from factory. The advanced key has a few nice things but its mostly gimics. The push start is nice, the little button on the handle is cool. But outside of that its fail

eppopipe 12-04-2011 12:25 AM

Guess im glad I got the non-tech.
My flip key is pretty cool too ;)

Key release button is fail though.

Seeing how I also have the tech package, I will have to agree with you guys.

dantes5823 12-04-2011 01:43 AM

Oh well.. i hope we enjoy that two thousand dollar gps and headlights -_-

jv83 12-04-2011 02:15 AM

Got my tech pkg free. I work for a valet company and all cars do this...UNLESS the dealership programs it to do otherwise.... Just imagine how the BMW owners who spent 100k plus feel. Call your dealership and see if they can prog it to shut off if it's not detected.

intotheice 12-04-2011 01:12 PM

HID headlights is standard for me but not AFS.

sheldonross 12-05-2011 11:29 AM

You don't have to take the keys out of your pocket to start it, it's advanced key system for convenience. Not anti-theft.

Almost any car you get out of and leave running is susceptible to theft. Don't hop out of your car in suspect places while it's running... If your running MS3 gets stolen because you weren't in it, it's your dumbass fault, not the cars.

Edit: I have no problem with OP's point, just the people acting like the advanced key is useless because of it.

Actually if you read the manual, this can be turned on at the dealer.

If you turn off your car and walk away w/out locking it will lock.

The other thing i want the dealer to turn on is the 3 blinks for lane changes by hitting the stalk but not all the way down..

It is dumb that the dealer has to activate these settings.

There is a specific section for settings in the manual. First page is settings by the customer, the second page is settings that can be changed by the dealer.

XxSPUDxX 12-05-2011 12:07 PM

looked up the manual.

page 10-12 for the 3 blinks

page 10-14 for locking when walking away.

neofandango 12-05-2011 12:07 PM

The keyless system is not a security system. It simply is what it says keyless. Once you start the car you have disabled any security device except a beep here and again. Turn off the car if you get out would be the best option.

Yea ive read that. Its called Personalizations. its gay that its not from factory. But my point is once the cars on your key doesnt do a thing. And your right neofandango

XxSPUDxX 12-05-2011 02:10 PM

i was commenting for the other poster who didnt know you can set that..

Best part is, it won't let you lock the doors with it running and the key outside the car.

Smurfzilla 12-05-2011 03:23 PM

I printed the form on this thread http://www.mazdaspeedforums.org/foru...itivity-91332/ and brought it to the dealer when I bought my car.

As said above, these are all detailed in your manual.

Fatguy729 12-05-2011 03:33 PM

I dunno if the 3's have run into this.... but I don't think shutting the car off if the they isn't detected would be good

in my MS6, I've been driving down the road, and the key light came on... started beeping at me and everything. Obviously my keys were in my pocket!

I dunno how cool it would be if your car shuts down on you while going 80 down the interstate just cuz your remote battery went dead!

Mine does, but you have to actually use the fob, not the button on the door.

Si[xXx]er 12-05-2011 04:36 PM

I too noticed this shortly after purchasing the car, and the you can't lock the door without the key inside seems like an oversight as well, at least in Canada. I would love to add a remote starter down the road so that I can warm the car up with out freezing my nuts off, but I'm not sure how that will work, if I can start it remotely, is it going to automatically un-lock the car because the key is not present and essentially allowing any passerby to jump in a take off with it?

I must admit, the key-less key system seems somewhat poorly executed and gimmicky in day to day use of the car, I would much rather have to put a key in the ignition and leave control of the door locks to me, so if I fuck up I have no one to blame but myself.

Dhump 12-05-2011 04:47 PM

I've noticed if I keep my key in the same pocket as my iphone the car has a tendency to not recognize the key. Pretty irritating.

There is a warning in your manual about that
