Driving with ac

Stupid question but been wondering does anyone else hate driving with ac on in this car my main grip is the rpm drops really fast during shifts which almost always results in a unsmooth gear change . I mean yeah more load but damn rpm drop so fast it's under the next shift point . No problems at idle everything feels great other than that noticed it the first summer I owned car an now this will ever my second year with it . No I'm not granny shifting normal speed here .

taf0422 05-28-2015 11:54 AM

Easy solution just turn the ac off prior to each shit. Problem solved or shift faster. Not double clutching like you should....Youre welcome

acousticdefbot 05-28-2015 12:20 PM

this is not abnormal behavior. dat power draw. i usually just drive with the windows down instead. if for some reason i need the air on tho, my foot just becomes a little heavier. problem solved.

KyleMS32010 05-28-2015 12:41 PM

You aren't going fast enough, the AC automatically disengages if you are driving your car hard. But yes, it is annoying having the AC on for normal driving.

anavrinIV 05-28-2015 12:55 PM

learn to rev match

crankshaft 05-28-2015 01:23 PM

I live in FL and i might drive with the AC off in January. So for all practical purposes, the AC is always on.

Yes, the car is very difficult to drive smoothly when the AC is on. You could "learn" to apply throttle better with the AC is on, but the problem is the AC/compressor design and lack of good programming to compensate on tip-in. It cycles (as all modern systems). You don't know when it's going to be on or off. It may be off during the 1-2 shift, but back on in the 3-4, and vice versa on your next acceleration. When you compensate and the compressor cycles off, you over-rev.

I either engage slowly, or just keep the revs up to minimize the impact of compressor load. Or, as already stated, drive it like you stole it AFD. :D

SuckSqueezBangBlow 05-28-2015 01:42 PM

Drive with the windows down and the heat turned up but the a/c turned off. Engine heat reduction and nice fresh air at the same time

Rev match while up shifting yea that makes sense

speedfreak44 05-28-2015 06:28 PM

Are we seriously thinking this car is hard to drive with the ac on? I feel like this is a 1st world problem. Come on guys this car is actually one of the best driving vehicles I have ever been in. Rev match is extremely easy to accomplish, the clutch is one of the best oem ones I have used and is on par with many aftermarket ones. Stop complaining and learn how to drive:biggthumpup:

It does make sense. If you're shifting too slowly to catch the falling revs at the right point in their sweep, then you need to feed in a little more gas than you are.

This whole thread is full of unnecessary whining.

brandonnicholson 05-28-2015 06:54 PM

AC doesnt work because racecar. Problem solved

Before each shit? Who shits in their car?

Well, that's why I spent five years of my life trying to invent an anal bum cover!

speedfreak44 05-28-2015 07:20 PM

Cut a hole in your driver seat and place a small pan under it, run a hose from the wmi resevoir with alcohol in it to your front seat, install in dash screen for the games, done. Never have to leave the car

acousticdefbot 05-28-2015 08:08 PM

this has devolved a bit and made me think of allen iverson.

but we're talking about air conditioning, man. what are we talking about? air conditioning? we're talking about air conditioning, man! we're talking about air conditioning! we're talking about air conditioning... we ain't talking about power goals! we're talking about air conditioning, man!

aackthpt 05-28-2015 08:18 PM

Try double-clutching like you should.

If that doesn't work, get NOS. Two of the big ones.

Kor3y101 05-28-2015 08:42 PM

Wtf is this forum coming to. Car hard to drive with AC on. Rip the god dam thing out then!
Seriously, in Australia. We drive with the aircon on for 9 -10 months of the year. And experience no drivability issues at all.
If it's that concerning, wind your windows down instead. Drive the car harder so your hitting redline before each shift. Drive around in 3rd all day so you don't need to worry about shifting, taking off at the lights? No drama, rev to redline, drop clutch, no worries about the aircon then.
I fear what MSF is coming to.

Cirruslydakota 05-28-2015 09:48 PM

With the way my car sounds (exhaust + intake) I hardly put the ac on. Only when its uncomfortably hot (I live in swamp ass Maryland) do I use it after im already cruising in 6th on the highway.

I prefer not to ride in AC when I know its not going to be on at work, that way its not a disappointment when I get there.

speedfreak44 05-28-2015 09:50 PM

Why are we bringing this thread back on topic?

I liked where it was headed :disappointed:

Thepedigree13 05-28-2015 11:19 PM

All joking aside, I know what the OP is talking about it is a little annoying, but this isn't my first car so I learn to overcome/ignore little issues.

Just shift a little higher than you do when you aren't using the A/C. Based on other people's responses it is fair to assume there is nothing wrong with your car, if that is what you're worried about.

Every car I have owned has had their little annoying traits. I can deal with revving higher.

shamie 05-29-2015 06:56 AM

What a bunch of fucking Nancys.

To answer your original question, No it doesn't bother me - I've never even noticed it. What does bother me is stupid threads like this. I expect it over at 247, but MSF? Come on!

Lol. Your not cool unless you shit before each shift.

Nice catch BTW. Haha

It's OK to shit when you see that car about to side-pack you. Hopefully that's not every shift.

Maybe when you're pulling a @FreeFlyFreak;. Another understandable time to shit.

MD1032 05-29-2015 07:57 PM

Wow, this thread is pretty awful.

How long has OP even had a driver's license?? Driving with the A/C on is a "new" problem? This car is one of the best driving cars with the A/C on I've ever been in because it has so much power that you can just straight up ignore it.

Try driving my first car - 1997 Civic LX - D16Y7, fixed cam, no VVT, no turbo, no VTEC, no nothing. Probably 75 horsepower at the wheels on a good day. That car could barely go up hills with the A/C off, never mind if it was on...you literally could not go up hills at all. I used to, as a joke, demonstrate the "turbo boost" button on my Civic to my friends by flooring it in 1st out of a light and then turning off the A/C, which produced a VTEC-like effect because the A/C was using up such a significant percentage of the engine's total power output.

I actually find the A/C in this car comforting. The vibes through my upgraded engine mounts give me a nice whole-body massage.

Which is why I try to keep it as sarcastic as possible. Hey, even the OP opened with "stupid question" ..... yep.

LOL, I had thought (while offline) to post almost exactly this. Even my 170hp Integra GSR was much more difficult to drive with A/C on compared to an ms3. My 1300cc Civic wagon also highly discouraged merging onto the freeway with the A/C button in (though it was an auto, so it didn't make it more difficult to drive... it just meant it would take possibly literally forever to reach freeway speed). The MS, being such a torque monster, drives right through the A/C load like a v6 or v8.

Let me just answer the question: I always use "auto" mode on the HVAC so the A/C is essentially always on, and NO. I pretty much always LOVE driving this car.

JgamB 05-29-2015 11:45 PM

This thread did make me think of my Civic Si, where that really was an annoyance. I've never noticed this phenomena with the Speed3. I find it more entertaining to have a carload of 5 people and it still pulls hard enough to make all of their assholes clench.

acousticdefbot 05-29-2015 11:56 PM

Every time you shift and your AC is on, I want you to know that we all know you can't drive and if we were watching it would look a little something like this.

djern 05-30-2015 02:33 AM

I can "feel" that the A/C is on, wasnt really a problem until my compressor got oil starved due to a leaky line last summer...replaced...system evacuated and refilled properly but I can feel the compressor "kick" on when cruising...dont care car has plenty of power to compensate...if im really anal...I turn AC off...my fiance in her 2010 accord turns her AC off anytime she has to accelerate..its pretty funny lol

but seriously op..get driver mod..shouldn't be that "hard" to drive with the AC on...

Finchee 05-30-2015 01:32 PM

I'll repeat what other have said, learn to rev match, on downshifts and yes on upshifts. It doesn't matter how fast or slow the revs are falling, if you know how to rev match, you'll end with smooth shifts.

That definitely hit home. 97 civic dx for me. No vtec. No power steering. Kinda liked that part though. Ya our cars aren't a pain to shift with a/c. And definitely aren't a pain to "shit" with a/c either. I like it cool when I'm having a good bm. My car is a pain to shift right now cause it doesn't run!!! Zoom zoom BOOM!! That's something to complain about.
